Adam's Thoughts:

  • The Rangers were already losing when they got their PP opportunities but there was more than enough time left, especially with the 5 on 3, to get back in the game. They didn't execute, they didn't convert and wasted their best chances and cutting the Tampa lead and creating some positive momentum.
  • I thought that it was the right call to pull Henrik Lundqvist who didn't look very sharp. The defense did him no favors with their turnovers, but he did look a little off tonight. He will likely be back in against Florida on Wednesday and bounce back like he has many times in the past.
  • As soon as Tampa scored their two quick goals I had flashbacks to the game in Tampa from a few years ago. That game was also around Thanksgiving and one where the Rangers were down 5-0 and had one of their worst performances of the 10-11 season.
  • The Rangers weren't as bad tonight as they were in that game in 2010. They had some good chances but dug themselves a hole and couldn't beat Ben Bishop, who was very good tonight and seems to own the Rangers.

11:08PM: The following quotes were sent by the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on tonight?s game?

?I still think we need to keep on getting to another level. We certainly did in the third period. Step made a huge play for us early on and I thought it gave us some life. They are a tough team and are defending pretty hard. We stuck with it and found a way to win a game. Hank (Henrik Lundqvist) was tremendous and I thought their goalie played really well, too.?

-??????? John Tortorella on tonight?s game?

?At times we struggled to get through and when we got through we just didn?t sustain our forecheck. A team that is rolling their lines like they are, we need to have some time in their end zone. As the game went on we were there less and less. So it pops up on you.?

Adam's Thoughts:

  • 2 for 36 on the power play in the playoffs......
  • It's the same position they were in during the last round, the biggest difference is that the Bruins are much better than the Caps. They are more balanced, have better goaltending and have the experience of going through the playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup. The series isn't lost for the Rangers, but they need to come out with? an effort on Tuesday that makes the Bruins play on their heels.

8:06PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

John Tortorella on Game 7??You make your legacy as a player in these types of situations. A number of our guys last year had a blast playing in these games. Some guys handle it and some guys don?t, but that?s what you play for, to get yourself in this type of situation and see what type of character you have, as a player, individually and as a team.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on Game 7 in Washington??If you lose two in overtime, you?re close.? It?s just a bounce and you win it, so we know we can do it.? We have to play a really hard and smart game.? I feel like they always come a little harder in their home building, but we can build on this one.? From the get-go we did all the things we talked about ? forechecked, played physical.? It was fun.?

11:12PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

?John Tortorella on tonight?s game??I think we?ve done better as the series has gone on. I thought tonight?s game was a game of momentum swings for both teams. One thing I like about our team the past couple of games is that we certainly have bent at times but didn?t break. I think our resiliency has really shown in these past two games and we are going to need that when we go to Washington. They are going to surge there and we just need to find a way to keep our heads above water and find a way to win a game.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??It was close again. A big win for us though ? much, much needed. I thought again we played a great game. They just kept coming back, but we did so many good things. You can see the confidence; we made a lot of good plays and I thought we deserved this one.?

  • ?Well....this was an interesting game for the Rangers, but the end result is that they won and they make the playoffs.
  • It's a relief to see them come out with a win, and a playoff spot, but the Rangers nearly let this game get away and while they should be happy, they should realize how close they were to a possible grudge match against a Devils team that would have loved nothing more than to end their season.
  • They had the start they were looking for and jumped ahead 2-0. Matt Gilroy took his second tripping penalty of the game and the ice tilted toward Carolina.
  • Dan Ellis will probably have a nice fruit basket waiting for him at his house courtesy of the Rangers. Brad Richards has had the puck luck lately and they don't get much luckier than that.

  • Some nights you get the bounces and tonight was certainly one of those for the Rangers.
  • Brad Richards with his first career hat trick in nearly 900 games. They weren't exactly pretty/highlight reel goals but they all count the same. Richards, for what seems like the first time all season, got some bounces to go his way.
  • They are 7-2-1 in their last ten and responded the perfect way to the loss against the Flyers. Next up is New Jersey on Sunday.

  • You can't have all the opportunities that the Rangers did on the PP and not score. It's not a new story for the Rangers, but at such an important part of the season they need to find a way to pop one in on the PP.
  • The Rangers weren't good enough through the first period, were better in the second and dominated the third, but it's another night where the Rangers don't put 60 minutes together. At this point in the season, with so much at stake, it's hard to see why or how the Rangers didn't bring that effort all night long.
  • There is nothing else that this team can do but get back to work and beat the Panthers on Thursday. They know they weren't good enough tonight and they need to find out why, correct it, and be better on Thursday.

10:27PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on tonight?s game??They changed the complexion when we were down and scored a goal. They changed the momentum plus scored a goal and drew a penalty so it was good stuff for us.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??Tough start, but we came back and that was big.? Overall, I think we had enough chances to win this game.? I only stopped two of four in the shootout.? I have to be better.? You face really good players.? I think the last one was a really good shot. Ovechkin, I felt like I had him, but I didn?t get the stick down.?

10:23PM: From the Rangers:

?John Tortorella on tonight?s game??I don?t think our start was great, but it wasn?t as slow as some of the other ones. I don?t think they created a bunch of scoring chances, eight throughout the game. It was mediocre by both (teams) and we?re certainly trying push the issue there. It was a big part of our talk before the game, our start. I don?t think we got the one that we wanted to.?

Dan Girardi on the team?s start??Every other team seems to come out really hard and put us on our heels. We have to find a way on the first shift and second shift, just throw everything we have at them in the first couple of shifts and create some momentum that way.?

Adam's Thoughts:

  • The Rangers had a goal from a defenseman, a secondary scorer and a primary scorer. They aren't going to lose many games when they get that combination of scoring.
  • Tonight reminded me of how the Rangers had played in the second game of back to backs in previous seasons. They didn't look tired as they have in other back to backs this season and it was mostly a continuation of the second and third period last night.
  • Michael Del Zotto has excellent hand-eye coordination and is creating chances.
  • The reaction of Rick Nash when he scored and Henrik Lundqvist when the game ended was one of relief and excitement. It's now two in a row and are starting to look like they understand the position their inconsistencies this season have put them in.

5:48PM: Adam's Thoughts:

  • That was a very bad first ten minutes but overall, a pretty solid final 50 minutes where the Rangers really flipped the game.
  • Even without the goal that he scored, Brian Boyle was effective today. As John Tortorella told Pierre during the game, some nights you can't find him, but that wasn't the case today.
  • This was one of the better games that Ryan McDonagh has played in a few weeks. He is usually really good but seemed to struggle in the first few games after that hit from Max Pacioretty. He was everywhere today for the Rangers.

- John Tortorella on tonight?s game??Step (Derek Stepan) has a chance, if he scores there you never know where it goes. I thought the first half of the period we were really good and then we turned it over in the middle of the period and never really regrouped from it. I don?t think we defended that well in that part of the game and they scored.?

- Rick Nash on playing at Madison Square Garden??That?s my job, that?s what I am trying to do. These fans are great. It?s fun for me to play in front of a sold out building in a hockey city that truly loves the Rangers. I think it?s fun for our whole team to perform in front of these fans.?

- John Tortorella on the Patrick Kaleta hit??I?m glad we made them pay. It?s disgusting. It?s a lack of respect. Each team wants to beat the other team, but you have to respect what?s going on, on the ice.?

- Rick Nash on tonight?s game??It?s a big win. I think we can come out a bit sharper. There wasn?t much there at the start. They played a good road period for the first two (periods). I?m proud of the guys, they stuck with it and we got a big win.?

10:19PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

John Tortorella on moving forward??I think that if we get some people back and we have that type of effort, some of the things that we do correctly, I think we?ll get on our way. We can say all the things we want to say, we just have to try to stay with it. And come to work tomorrow, see what our health is, keep on going about our business each day.?

Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??I thought we played really well, especially the second half. They had a strong second period. Obviously the fourth goal is something I?m going to think about for the next 24 hours. I think that we did a lot of good things; we just have to stay positive here. It?s definitely a step in the right direction.?

9:35PM: The Rangers sent the following quotes:

John Tortorella on tonight?s game??We?re going to take it one at a time. That?s all we can do is take it one at a time. The last game we grabbed a point there and tonight was a hard game. That?s all we?re trying to do, we?re not looking at streaks or records. We?re just trying to get points every night.?

- Henrik Lundqvist on the team?s recent play??I think we?re getting to where we need to be. We?re doing a lot of good things. It pays off, so I don?t know if you want to call it on a roll here. It?s a good feeling when we play the way we should play, and it pays off. I think special teams are key. Lately, the PK has been great, the power play?s getting really good. I think that?s a huge part of having success in this league is having special teams go well for you.?

  • Marian Gaborik STOPPED
  • Patrice Bergeron STOPPED
  • Rick Nash SCORES
  • Brad Marchand SCORES
  • Brad Richards STOPPED
  • David Krejci STOPPED
  • Ryan Callahan SCORES

Adam's Thoughts:

  • It wasn't the first time and it certainly won't be the last time that Ryan Callahan wins a game for the Rangers.
  • You certainly don't want to see them blow a 3-0 lead, but the Rangers showed some nice character by staying composed, getting some chances in OT and then winning it in the shootout.
  • There are still a lot of things to correct, another too many men on the ice penalty!, but for most of the game the Rangers were good.
  • The things that Rick Nash can do with the puck are incredible. Both the play he made to set up Carl Hagelin and his goal in the shootout were All-World.
  • The Rangers have been getting some nice primary scoring from Carl Hagelin and Derek Stepan lately, but where has the primary scoring from Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards been?
  • They didn't get the win exactly the way they wanted to, but two points is two points and now it's three in a row for the Rangers.

11PM: The following quotes were sent by the Rangers:

John Tortorella on Arron Asham??A guy like Ash, what he does, a lot of players won?t do it. Those types of guys who fight for their teammates and do all of the dirty things in the game, and score a goal, you?re certainly happy for him. He?s a good teammate. He?s played on about a hundred teams and every team we talked to said he?s a great guy.?

- Henrik Lundqvist on the team?s play??I think special teams have been great and such an important part of our game. Also, our starts have been really good. We have a lot of confidence and were really relaxed and starting to play our game. That makes a big difference.?

10:20PM: The following quotes were sent by the Rangers:

(Carl) Hagelin comes up here and changes our team last year. I?m not sure where it goes, but both of them have contributed here during the first couple of games.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on J.T. Miller??It?s great. We need everybody to do good stuff for us but obviously a young kid like that to come in -- and not only his goals. I think he plays so mature out there making good decisions with the puck, It?s important. It definitely brings some energy to the group. Guys come in and do well right away.?

Adam's Thoughts:

  • The power play continues to cost the Rangers. A team that wants to be a contender and reach the next level, like the Rangers do, can't have a power play that struggles a quarter as much as this one does.
  • JT Miller played like a guy who never wants to put on a Whale jersey again. It will take more than one good performance to stay on the roster but he looked like he belonged.
  • Chris Kreider was having a nice game before he scored and putting him with Brad Richards and giving him some power play time seemed to elevate his game.

Adam's Thoughts:

  • The Rangers won this game because of one word.....discipline. Besides Stu Bickel's hooking penalty, which Tampa scored on, the Rangers stayed out of the box. Everything about the Rangers game looks better when they play 5 on 5 and stay out of the penalty box.
  • The Carl Hagelin, Derek Stepan, Taylor Pyatt line was the Rangers best tonight. The two players who needed to step up and score, Hagelin and Stepan, did and for the first time this season the Rangers had some scoring depth.
  • Marty Biron was great for the Rangers.
  • Over the past few years the Rangers have been good at bouncing back after bad performances and they did that tonight. They continue to see-saw with their consistency and tonight was good. It won't matter that much though if they can't replicate it against the Devils on Tuesday.

10:21PM The following quotes were sent by the Rangers:

Dan Girardi on tonight?s game??We wanted to be physical on their top guys and I thought we were pretty good at that. We just couldn?t get much going offensively. We held the puck for a minute and they turned it around and came back and trapped it on us. It wasn?t the game we wanted to follow up a couple of wins with that?s for sure.?

Ryan McDonagh on tonight?s game??We were kind of playing too tentative, I think. We weren?t playing with that aggressive mindset we had the last two games. That is what won us those two games ? being aggressive, taking chances, getting in on the forecheck, taking two more hard strides in the neutral zone to get to the puck. We just didn?t have that aggressive mindset, and kind of let them play their game.?

10:39PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

John Tortorella on the power play??The last game, going into that we had some good looks. We probably had five or six chances on the power play in the last game. Tonight, I thought Danny (Dan Girardi) and Del Z (Michael Del Zotto) did a really good job up top, and Nasher (Rick Nash) coming off the wall. We had really good puck movement on that power play. The past couple of games, we were getting much more movement out of it, and obviously we scored a big goal on it tonight.?

Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??It was definitely key tonight to have our special teams play well. To kill off the 5 on 3 in the second period was huge. Obviously the last ten minutes of the game we kept taking penalties. Our guys stepped up and played really well in front. We were in a similar spot when we played in Philly [on Thursday], we had our chances on the power play but we didn?t take it. They definitely had their chances toniht, but we played really well. We played smart and hard, and really aggressive, I think. It was a good game? A good win for us.?

Their goalie played really well, and we just needed to keep on playing our game. If we scored a couple goals I thought we would win it. We finally did that in the third.?

- Henrik Lundqvist on getting the win??It was confidence but still you saw what happened after the first period. We were all over them and they still had a 2-0 lead, but that?s hockey. A couple of quick plays and tough bounces and it?s in your net. Yeah it was a good feeling; it felt like we were playing really well but at the same time they were defending really well. Finally we just put too much pressure on them. We definitely deserve this win, no question. We played such a good game from start to finish.?

Adam's Thoughts:

  • The Rangers were slow tonight. It looked as if they were skating against gusts of wind every time they tried to break out or go on a rush. They were sloppy with their passing and didn't do nearly enough to push a Flyers team that is hurting and had defensive struggles in their past three games.
  • The power play is hurting them in a big way through four games. They scored on one of them, but wasted the 4 minute PP that included the 2 minute 5 on 3. It was hard to see what they were trying to do, but whatever it was, it didn't lead to nearly enough offense.
  • Henrik Lundqvist was sharp and looked pretty consistent and comfortable tonight. He made a few really good saves

From the Rangers:

- Ryan Callahan on blocking shots??That?s how we won so many games last year. That?s our identity that we?ve been trying to build and we always talked about for the past three or four years, and that?s when we?re successful, when we play that style of hockey.?

- Rick Nash on Marian Gaborik??He opens up a lot of space. He?s one of the best scorers in the league and people better be aware when he?s out there. For me and Richie (Brad Richards) it opens up a little more space which is important.?

10:37PM: These quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on Rick Nash??He?s probably been our best player. I?m not too interested in singling out our players, but he?s the real thing. You can see that.?

-??????? Rick Nash on tonight?s game??We weren?t sticking to our system. We have a great system if you stick to it ? it involves everyone trusting each other and making sure everyone is in position. Tonight we weren?t.?

Adam's Thoughts:

  • They showed flashes in the third period of the team from last season and I think we will see more than just flashes on Wednesday against the Bruins and Thursday against the Flyers.
  • They just aren't executing properly. No-look passes, drop passes with no-one around but the Penguins, passes bouncing off of sticks, missed shots, blown coverages and too many penalties. These things need to be eliminated.
  • The Penguins are really good and, at least through two games, the best team in the East.
  • Rick Nash was good tonight and we saw what kind of offense he can create. The goal he scored seemed like a carbon copy of the ones in all the Nash highlight videos.

  • The Bruins are good. The Penguins are good. Anyone who thought this would be a cake walk has certainly gotten a rude awakening. The Rangers are being shown what kind of level they need to play at if they want to be considered contenders in reality and not just on paper.
  • Maybe this is what they need though. With all the talk of expectations and taking the next step, this weekend needs to be humbling/sobering and a learning experience. No more talk of expectations or trying to live up to the pressure that has been put on them. If they focus on one game at a time, like they did last year, those things will take care of themselves and the Rangers will be in right spot.
  • The Penguins have set the bar for the Atlantic Division and it will be up to the Rangers to fix their mistakes, shore up defensively and regain their intensity.

The following are from Hockey Night Live:

10:15PM: John Tortorella:

  • "I thought as the game went on we started to play better. Collectively I didn't think we played that well. We still had a chance on the 5 on 3 but we came up empty."
  • "We didn't move the puck well, I don't think Nash touched it. We didn't make the right plays and it didn't work."
  • "We started the season and we did not play well enough to win, Boston did."
  • "Haggy takes a stupid penalty, Brian takes a yapping penalty."
9:56PM: Ryan Callahan:
  • On the penalties, "They impacted our first a little bit. It's hard to kill that many penalties in a row and get everybody into the game."
  • On the 5 on 3, "Richie had a couple of good shots, one hit me, but at the end of the day we have to score on it. I thought that hurt us a little bit and killed our momentum"
  • On what they need to do " we need to increase our battled level, that is first. System-wise we aren't where we want to be but that is expected. We just need to increase our battle level and level of compete and we will be better."
Billy Jaffe, "I think the Rangers were okay tonight. They will be better tomorrow night with a game under their belt.
