NEW YORK -- As the first round began to fade Thursday night at the NBA Draft, Kentucky big man Skal Labissiere remained in the Green Room at Barclays Center.

Time will tell whether or not Labissiere, who struggled in his one season in Lexington, made a mistake by leaving school early, but for now, the Haitian-born forward is a millionaire.

Once projected as the No. 1 overall pick by DraftExpress, Labissiere was selected 28th overall by the Phoenix Suns, who will send him to the Sacramento Kings. He was one of two Kentucky players to be selected in the first round after classmate and Canadian sensation Jamal Murray was chosen seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets.

NEW YORK -- In an NBA Draft widely perceived as a two-player event, multiple reports have surfaced this week that the Philadelphia 76ers will select Ben Simmons No. 1, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers selecting Brandon Ingram at No. 2.

If that holds true when the scene shifts to Barclays Center on Thursday evening, then this draft truly starts at No. 3. At that spot, nearly a half-dozen players have been mentioned in recent weeks, so when the Boston Celtics go on the clock, things could get interesting.

"They talked to me, I came in for a second workout and obviously, if I'm coming on for a second workout, they have some heavy interest," said Cal wing Jaylen Brown, who was once projected as high as No. 1 while a senior at Marietta (Ga.) High School, and is now projected at No. 8 by DraftExpress. "I talked to them about that, and things went well. Boston has a great history, great tradition, and it's a great city. I wouldn't mind being there."

NEW YORK - Rarely, if ever, does an NBA team allow a player it just drafted to represent his country at the Olympics in the same year.

There is too much newly-invested money in draft picks, and too much to learn in a short period of time, so NBA teams prefer their new guys focus on them, not on outside interests.

This is the problem facing Jamal Murray, who will hear his name called at the NBA Draft on Thursday evening. The Canadian sensation and former University of Kentucky star would like to play for Canada this summer, but based on how these things generally work, it seems unlikely.

NEW YORK -- Two of the last three No. 1 picks in the NBA Draft have been Canadians.

Three of the last six No. 1 picks have played at Kentucky.

But never has a Canadian who played at Kentucky gone with the first overall pick.

CHICAGO -- Kentucky coach John Calipari believes Marcus Lee will remain in the NBA Draft, but is uncertain about Isaiah Briscoe.

"Marcus really wants to do this, and my guess is that he'll keep his name in the draft because this is what he wants to do," Calipari told reporters Wednesday. "And I just told him to go up there [to the NBA Draft Combine] and do your thing and show the athletic player that you are. But he's also worked out. We've had those guys work out with teams before the combine so two or three teams could evaluate them, talk to them, and Marcus went to the combine."

The 6-foot-10 Lee is projected as the No. 29 junior by DraftExpress.com and is one of four Kentucky guys here at the NBA Draft Combine, along with Jamal Murray, Skal Labissiere and Tyler Ulis.

To the surprise of no one, Canadian freshman sensation Jamal Murray announced Friday he will forego his final three years of eligibility at the University of Kentucky and enter the NBA Draft.

Murray will hire an agent, meaning he cannot return to school.

Murray, the projected No. 6 pick according to DraftExpress, averaged 20.0 points per game, which is the most by a player at the school under seventh-year head coach John Calipari. He is the 17th one-and-done under Calipari.

A year ago, seven Kentucky players declared for the NBA Draft following the college basketball season -- and six of them were drafted.

Now that Kentucky has been ousted from the NCAA Tournament by Indiana, 73-67, similar decisions will be looming for several Wildcats.

Freshman guard Jamal Murray and freshman big man Skal Labissiere are both projected as lottery picks by DraftExpress.com, with the 6-foot-5 Murray at No. 7 and the 7-foot Labissiere at No. 10.

Count John Calipari and several NBA personnel among those who like the new rules giving underclassmen more time before making a decision on the NBA Draft.

Beginning this year, the NCAA moved back the NBA Early Entry Eligibility Deadline until 10 days after the end of the NBA Combine. This year the Combine runs May 11-15, so the new deadline falls on May 25.

Under the old system, the deadline would have come at midnight on April 24, well before the Combine. The Combine has hosted 48 and 36 players the last two year's respectively.

If the NCAA Tournament started today, Ben Simmons and LSU would not be participating.

When ESPN's Joe Lunardi put out his bracket this week, there were five SEC teams in the mix and the Tigers weren't one of them.

But of course the NCAA Tournament doesn't begin for another two months, and Simmons and LSU still have plenty of time to state their case.

The top five picks remained the same in the latest DraftExpress.com Mock Draft for 2016, but there was some slight shuffling in picks 6-10.

LSU's Ben Simmons remains at No. 1, followed by Duke's Brandon Ingram, Maccabi Tel Aviv's Dragan Bender, Providence's Kris Dunn and Kentucky's Skal Labissiere.

Picks 6-10 now feature Cal's Jaylen Brown, Marquette's Henry Ellenson, Utah's Jacob Poeltl, Kentucky's Jamal Murray and Cal's Ivan Rabb. Murray moved down two spots to No. 9.

The list of NBA players under 6-feet tall to be drafted and then enjoy success is few and far between.

Isaiah Thomas, the Mr. Irrelevant of the 2011 NBA Draft because he was taken by the Sacramento Kings with the 60th and final pick, is now thriving with the Boston Celtics. The 5-foot-9 Thomas is averaging 20.9 points, 6.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds.

Kentucky sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis could turn out to be the next player under 6-feet to enjoy some NBA success. The 5-9 Ulis is currently projected at No. 43 by DraftExpress.com, and at least one scout who watched Ulis help Kentucky beat Louisville on Saturday believes the diminutive floor general will get drafted.

NEW YORK -- Marc Loving knew that almost nobody in the college basketball world picked Ohio State to beat No. 4 Kentucky in the CBS Champions Classic at Barclays Center on Saturday.

And why should they?

Ohio State entered at 5-5 on the season and got whupped by 20 points at UConn just a week ago.

At least a third of the NBA has reached out to Jamal Murray's AAU coach to check in on the Kentucky freshman guard.

"At least 10 [NBA] teams have reached out," Tony McIntyre, the co-founder of Nike Team AB -Bounce and the Director of Basketball Operations for Athlete Institute, told SNY.tv on Tuesday by phone.

"They're basically asking what his work ethic was like, how he fit in, what kind of kid he was, how far do we see him going, is it a surprise what he's doing in college, those types of questions."

Will Brown knew all about Jamal Murray even before Albany played Kentucky Friday night in the season-opener for both teams.

"I'll say it now before everybody jumps on the bandwagon, I think Jamal Murray might be the best player in the country," the Albany coach told me before Kentucky beat his team, 78-65, at Rupp Arena. "He reminds me of a combination of Mark Jackson and Andre Miller with a jump shot because he can post you up, he's got size, he can run a team and he can really shoot that thing."

The projected No. 6 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Murray then went out and put up 19 points, eight assists and three steals in his collegiate debut.

NEW YORK - Tyler Ennis has known Kentucky point guard for Jamal Murray for several years now. The two Canadians played pickup games against one another and their fathers both coached with the CIA Bounce AAU program that also produced former No. 1 NBA Draft picks Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett.

"I actually saw [Murray] when he first got discovered, when he first started coming out to the gym and stuff," Ennis, a one-and-done at Syracuse and former St. Benedict's Prep standout, told SNY.tv before he got the start for the Milwaukee Bucks against the Knicks Friday night at MSG.

"And we didn't really know how old he was. He was just kind of playing with us, and when he went back and started playing with his own age he just started dominating. So I think he's showed how talented he is throughout this past summer and in high school, so I'm just excited to see him when games start at Kentucky and see how he does over there."

Playing his first organized basketball game for Kentucky, Canadian sensation Jamal Murray put on a show.

The 6-foot-5 freshman just missed a triple-double when he went for 22 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in a 117-58 exhibition win over NAIA outfit Ottawa.

Kentucky coach John Calipari pulled the starters with almost four minutes to go, so Murray couldn't notch the first Kentucky triple-double since Chris Mills in 1988.
