Although Malik Newman has been linked to visiting Kansas and N.C. State, his father told SNY.tv that no visits had been set up as of Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm not even in town so that's not true," Horatio Webster said Wednesday by phone. "We don't have any visits set up. We haven't talked to Kansas about a visit, we haven't talked to N.C. State about a visit."

A Mississippi State spokesman said there was no update on which schools had received a release to contact Newman.

Malik Newman will transfer from Mississippi State, the school announced on Monday.

"I appreciate all of Malik's hard work, and I wish him the very best moving forward," head coach Ben Howland said. "I want nothing but the best for Malik and his family."

Assuming Newman transfers and sits out the 2016-17 season, he wouldn't play Division 1 ball again until the 2017-18. He would remain eligible for the 2017 NBA Draft but it's unclear how attractive he would be to NBA scouts after sitting out a year.

CHICAGO -- Malik Newman will pull out of the NBA Draft and return to Mississippi State for his sophomore season if his father is not satisfied with his projected draft status.

Once projected as high as the No. 4 pick by DraftExpress.com, the 6-foot-3 1/2 Newman is currently slotted at No. 52. He has not hired an agent and has until May 25 to decide about returning to campus.

"Right now everyone is projecting him a second round pick and, to be quite honest with you, I don't know if we're going to take the chance on being a second-round pick," Horatio Webster, Newman's father and a former Mississippi State star, told SNY.tv by phone on Thursday. "Being that he's just a freshman, if he don't get a promise or something that's concrete, then we're not going to take the chance on being a second-round pick. He would pull his name out by the 25th."

When Ben Simmons picked LSU and Malik Newman chose Mississippi State, both initially faced some heat over their college decisions.

Many asked: Why would potential one-and-done players pick SEC schools with no recent tradition of success over bluebloods like Kentucky, Kansas or Duke?

Well, here we are a year later and neither Simmons nor Newman is headed to the NCAA Tournament and both players are still getting heat for their college decisions.
