The NFL Scouting Combine has been in full swing this week, but the real scouting continues on Friday as running backs, offensive linemen, kickers and special teamers take the the field.

Here's who the Jets should be keeping a close eye on when it all begins at 4 p.m...

1) Louisville T Mekhi Becton

It's no secret that the Jets need a lot of help on the offensive line this offseason. Really, every spot along the offensive line is due for an upgrade, and when it comes to protecting quarterback Sam Darnold, finding someone to protect the all-important blind side for years to come is the key.

At the tackle position, Mekhi Becton is a physical freak. Weighing in at 6-foot-7, 364 pounds, Becton would be the heaviest tackle drafted in the last decade, and he'd instantly become the second heaviest tackle in the NFL behind Trent Brown of the Raiders.

All NFL eyes are on Indianapolis this week for the 2020 Scouting Combine, and the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends will take part in on-field workouts on Thursday.

Wide receiver is undoubtedly a position of need for the Jets, and they may already have their targets set on one of the draft's fastest players.

While listing out five Combine performances that should intrigue the Jets, ESPN's Rich Cimini listed Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, noting that the Jets 'have had their eye on him for a while.'

Despite being at the NFL Combine and getting to look at a bunch of young talent, Jets GM Joe Douglas still feels the biggest needs for the team will come in free agency.

"Obviously, 21 UFAs, three RFAs, we have quite a few," Douglas said to SNY's Jeane Coakley on Tuesday in Indianapolis. "So this is an important week for us to get with not only those 21 guys and three RFAs and their representatives, but also others and just see what it's going to look like, so we have a lot of holes to fill moving forward."

Douglas said during his press conference at the combine that he wanted to make All-Pro safety Jamal Adams a "Jets for life," and he reiterated that sentiment later in the day with Coakley.

When Adam Gase came into One Jets Drive as the team's new head coach last season, he knew there was going to be a learning curve. It was an entirely new coaching staff, and more specifically, an entirely new offense for his QB Sam Darnold -- among other playmakers like Le'Veon Bell -- to learn.

But Year 2 in Gase's system should be much easier for the coaches and players, and he said as much during his presser at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

"I think Year 2 is usually the biggest kind of jump, whether it's a player or coach," Gase said. "It's been nice to kind of take that time off after the season, jump right into it, both sides of the ball.

The NFL's offseason started in earnest on Monday, as the league descended on the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to begin preparations for the NFL Draft. When the week-long meat market is over, free agency will only be two weeks away.

The Jets obviously still have plenty of holes despite a strong finish to their 7-9 season. Here's a look at the five areas -- in order of importance -- that rookie GM Joe Douglas will need to address the most over the next few months:

As he continues to pursue his dream of playing in MLB, Mets minor league prospect and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow addressed the media on Sunday afternoon, and made some positive comments on the two young quarterbacks playing in New York.

When asked if he was "yay or nay" on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, Tebow laughed at the question and then gave an encouraging answer on the No. 6 overall pick in last year's draft.

"I think he's got a lot of talent," Tebow said on Jones. "I think he was coached really well in college. I think he will continue to improve. I think continuing to get him more weapons and confidence is pretty critical."

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is listed at 100-1 to win the NFL MVP in 2020, according to BetOnline.ag.

Darnold played in Week 1 in 2019, but missed the next three games recovering from mononucleosis. He returned in Week 6 and played the rest of the season, finishing the year with a 7-6 record at quarterback. He threw for 3024 yards and a 61.9% completion percentage, along with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Darnold is joined at 100-1 by Giants running back Saquon Barkley, former Giants wide reciever Odell Beckham Jr., former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and others.

Free agency hasn't worked out well for the Jets. They spent a lot of money under former GM Mike Maccagnan and very few of those contracts have turned out to be worth the money. Some of them, in fact, now look like the worst deals the Jets have ever made.

So it's with that knowledge and a sense of great caution that the Jets head into their first offseason under new GM Joe Douglas. He's armed with about $50 million in salary cap space to spend, and likely a lot more coming when he's finished with his cuts. And he will spend, because he has to on a team filled with far too many holes.

Super Bowl LIV is finally here, as the Chiefs and 49ers square off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday night to see who will hoist the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy at the end of the night.

Both squads have their stars. Patrick Mahomes leads a stacked offense that includes Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce as his weapons. But they're going to have to face off against Richard ShermanNick Bosa and the rest of the NFL's No. 2 defense. And, of course, you can't sleep on Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, and the rest of that Niners offense that ran all over the Packers two weeks ago.

But, for Jets fans, it's a chance to keep your eye on a few players that are set to enter free agency once this game is over.

He was the man that Eli Manning took over for when the Giants decided to transition to their rookie quarterback back in 2004. It's been 16 years, and Kurt Warner is now being asked if his once-apprentice will be joining him in the Hall of Fame one day.

His answer? Look at the stats. They speak for themselves in Warner's eyes.

"It is such a weird process of going into the Hall of Fame and what all goes into making someone a Hall of Fame player," Warner told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano from the Loews Hometown set-up at the Super Bowl Experience down in Miami. "But, when you look at quarterbacks, you look at stats -- that's the era that we live in. And when you look at stats, without question Eli Manning has the stats to be in the Hall of Fame."

In his second season in the NFL, Jets QB Sam Darnold was on a rollercoaster. He dealt with mono just as the season started, and as he made his way back, he even played through a thumb injury.

Among draft experts, there is a great debate about which wide receiver is the best in this year's NFL Draft. And that debate revolves around Alabama's Jerry Jeudy and Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb.

Both receivers check off all the boxes evaluators and coaches alike look for. Whether its top-notch speed, route-running, ball-tracking, or sturdy hands, Jeudy and Lamb possess the attributes necessary to translate their stellar college careers into NFL careers as No. 1 receivers.

And the Jets could definitely use one of those for Sam Darnold

Let's consider some of the top prospects that play positions where the Jets will be specifically looking for reinforcements...

All but two teams -- the Chiefs and 49ers -- are left to worry about their offseasons with Super Bowl LIV set for Feb. 2. While NFL free agency kicks off in March, the efforts of scouting top NFL Draft prospects will ramp up.

The Jets have the No. 11 overall pick in this year's Draft after picking at No. 3 in 2018 and 2019. Sam Darnold and Quinnen Williams were used with those selections.

Who will join them with the latest first round selection in GM Joe Douglas' first draft? Here's what experts believe will happen...

Skimming through myriad mock drafts that have surfaced ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, many believe Jets GM Joe Douglas will be targeting a No. 1 receiver for Sam Darnold. There are a few playmakers for New York to choose from, including Alabama's Jerry Jeudy, Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb, and Clemson's Tee Higgins

Having a top receiver is definitely a need for the Jets, but is that what they should be focused on with the No. 11 overall pick? What about protecting Darnold?

While there's multiple playmakers to salivate over in the first round, there's just as many offensive linemen to bulk up that unit for the Jets.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold reportedly had surgery to repair a ligament in his left thumb on Tuesday, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.

Darnold is not expected to miss any time as the surgery was performed by the Jets team doctors.

He originally suffered a thumb injury on Oct. 27 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, though, he never missed any time due to the injury. He wore a brace on his left hand under a glove for the rest of the season.

Over the next week or so, we're taking an in-depth look at the rookie season for each of the Jets' 2019 rookie class. We continue today with a look at tight end Trevon Wesco, who was selected in the fourth round out of West Virginia.

On the face of it, Wesco had a disappointing season, as he only caught two passes, struggled in pass protection and did little to elevate the Jets' underwhelming running game. However, there were signs of usefulness throughout the season and some evidence of progression.

He typically had mixed results as a run blocker from the tight end position early in the season but seemed to improve his consistency as the season went along. He seemed to hold up well at the point attack and was able to handle assignments that required him to set the edge against defensive linemen while at times flashing dominance against smaller players in space.

From an off-field bout with mononucleosis to on-field struggles with development, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold's second year in New York ultimately impressed general manager Joe Douglas.

"Talk about toughness and talk about adversity," Douglas said. "Not many guys faced more adversity than Sam, as far as dealing with the mono and some rough patches during the year. But I think the respect that Sam has earned from everyone in this building -- and especially in the locker room -- as far as his ability to handle adversity, to come back, to play really good football, to watch him grow throughout the year, to watch him grow from Year 1 to Year 2, just with everything -- the decision-making, the leadership -- it was really impressive to see."

Darnold went 7-6 as a second-year starter, completing 273 of 441 passes (61.9 percent) for 3,024 yards and 19 touchdowns to 13 interceptions in 13 games.

The Jets added wide receiver Jamison Crowder last offseason and throughout the tough season for his team, the wideout quietly shined.

In his first season with the Jets, Crowder led the the team in receptions (78), receiving yards (833) and touchdowns (6). His receptions was also a career-high for him personally.

Things got off to a very quick start.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold echoed the thoughts of his head coach Adam Gase on Monday, and though both were disappointed in the way the year began, pointed to a strong second half of the season as something the Jets can build on next season.

"I thought in the beginning of the season, I thought we were inconsistent, and I think that's really some of the reason why we lost games at times," Darnold said. "I thought I played inconsistent as well, towards the back half of the season I thought I played better, didn't turn the ball over as much, but again there is still room to be more consistent.

"But as a whole, I felt like the back half of the season as an offense we really felt more comfortable and played more consistent."

The season has come and gone for the Jets, with the first year of Adam Gase's term as head coach ending in a 7-9 season that got off to a tumultuous start and ended on a high note.

After a 1-7 start that included Sam Darnold's absence with mono, a rough start to Le'Veon Bell's career in New York, and Jamal Adams trade rumors, Gase and the Jets righted the ship and won six of their last eight games.

Gase held his final press conference of the year on Monday to cap off the season, so here are a few takeaways...

After Sunday's 13-6 win over the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets ended a roller-coaster ride of a 2019 season at 7-9 overall.

Winners in six of their last eight games, following a 1-7 start, can the Jets now keep the momentum pushing into 2020?

"Yeah, you'd always hope to think that's a possibility," said first-year head coach Adam Gase. "We'll kind of have to see how everything goes with the offseason, training camp -- you just never know who much the team changes, through injuries and things like that. But I do think it's a good kind of first year with guys going through some adversity and finding a way to dig themselves out."

With Buffalo locked into the fifth seed and the Jets eliminated from playoff contention about a month ago, Sunday's game predictably took on the characteristics of a game where nobody really wanted to be there. Sam Darnold's one-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder in the fourth quarter ultimately keyed the Jets 13-6 win.

In pouring rain, the Jets - playing mostly against back-ups - led just 3-0 at the half following a disjointed affair that featured turnovers, missed kicks and all-around sloppy play.

The second half wasn't any less scrappy, even though the rain eased off a bit, but the Jets finally drove for the game's only touchdown after the Bills had tied the score. Darnold's pass to Crowder finished off a drive keyed by a couple of nice plays by back-up receiver Vyncint Smith.

Sam Darnold's sophomore season in the NFL has been an interesting one for sure.

While his numbers show a slight improvement compared to his rookie season, with his completion percentage (61.7), yards per attempt (7.0), and yards per game (235.4) all up from his first season, Darnold's 2019 season will likely always be remembered for his early-season battle with mononucleosis.

Just a couple of days after the Jets' Week 1 loss to Buffalo, Darnold was diagnosed with mono, causing him to miss the Jets' next three games, a stretch in which the team went 0-3, virtually derailing the early-season playoff contention hopes.

Former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington had a solid career with the team, throwing for 13,783 yards and 82 touchdowns in 61 starts for the Jets over eight seasons (2000-2007).

He took the Jets to playoffs three times, something fans expect current starting quarterback Sam Darnold to do as well. Darnold has continued to improve since the Jets drafted him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and Pennington clearly sees those improvements happening this season.

"Although we would say that it has been up and down, I do believe there has been considerable improvement," Pennington said. "Where earlier in the year, you probably would see four to five decisions that you would question. Now you're only seeing only one to two decisions that we're questioning.

In the eyes of Jets head coach Adam Gase, New York quarterback Sam Darnold started to truly turn the corner with Nov. 24's 34-3 win over the Oakland Raiders.

By the numbers, Darnold completed 20 of 29 passes (69.0 percent) for 315 yards and two touchdowns to no interceptions while adding four rushes for 16 yards (4.0 average) and one touchdown.

But what Darnold collectively did before the snap caught the attention of Gase when thinking back on the second-year Jets quarterback's development down the stretch.

In a game that meant a lot more to the Steelers than it did the Jets, it took the visitors a while to get going. Pittsburgh fell two scores behind early and, although they tied the game just before halftime, the Jets managed to shut them out after half time to hold on for a hard-fought 16-10 win.

The Jets were in control for most of the first half. They played the run well, generated pressure and intercepted two Devlin Hodges passes to knock him out of the game. However, Mason Rudolph came off the bench and gave the Steelers a spark, leading them to a field goal and then following that up with a late touchdown to tie the score.

Offensively, the Jets had put together a nice touchdown drive to start the game but then once again the offense faltered once they got through the scripted portion of the gameplan. Sam Darnold's fumble after the Jets reached midfield on an attempted two-minute drill would set up thetying score.

Darnold went 18-for-32 for 218 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Baltimore during Week 15's edition of Thursday night football, but the Ravens' offense was too much for the Jets to handle as they fell, 42-21.

The second-year quarterback connected with Jamison Crowder for both of his scores on the day, including a pinpoint pass that allowed Crowder to toe-tap in a touchdown on third and goal.

Just 24 games into his tenure in New York, Sam Darnold has thrown himself into the Jets' Top 10 career passing yards list.

Despite the Jets falling to the Ravens last Thursday night, Darnold threw for 218 yards to reach 5,507 passing yards in less than two full seasons in the NFL. Darnold moved past Al Dorow (5,399) and into 10th on the Jets' all-time list.

Darnold started 13 games for the Jets in his rookie season and put up 2,865 yards. The second-year quarterback currently sits at 2,642 yards this season, setting himself up to potentially pass his rookie mark if he plays the final two games of the year.

After Thursday's loss to the Ravens, a video of Jets quarterback Sam Darnold and head coach Adam Gase arguing on the sidelines went viral and many people questioned what exactly the two were discussing.

Despite Gase adressing the matter on Friday during a conference call and saying that the two were actually in agreement on the team struggles in the game, former Jets defenseive lineman Leger Douzable thinks things really went a bit differently...

Douzable also discussed Darnold's progressions this season and how he thinks the USC product has fared in his two seasons in the NFL.

The Jets, like most of the league this season, had a hard time stopping MVP-favorite Lamar Jackson last night in Baltimore and fell to the Ravens 42-21 on Thursday Night Football.

On Friday, coach Adam Gase spoke to the media over a conference call...

Here are four Takeaways from Gase's conference call

1) A video of Gase and Jets quarterback Sam Darnold arguing with each other on the sideline went viral after the game, especially since Darnold is known for typically being a level-headed guy, but Gase just said that actually the two were both agreeing on the same point.

Much was made about Jets running back Le'Veon Bell missing last Sunday's game against Miami due to the flu, but Bell was able to turn in one of his better performances of the season on Thursday night, albeit in a 42-21 loss to the Ravens.

Bell carried the ball 21 times for 87 yards, his highest rushing total of the season, despite a short week of practice and coming off his illness.

"The guys upfront did a great job of moving guys off the ball and giving me some lanes. Coach gave me some opportunities today, so it was overall a good feeling for me coming out of the game healthy," Bell said afterwards.

"I felt good. Breathing felt fine. Coaches did a good job of still getting me out of the game every now and then. I'd never pull myself out, but personnel things and changes, getting me out of the game and getting me a breather, kind of protecting me from myself, so you've got to give credit to Coach (Adam Gase), he did a good job today."

BALTIMORE - Gregg Williams' defense never had a chance.

Facing the powerful Ravens and the dangerous Lamar Jackson without a bunch of their best players went exactly as expected for the Jets on Sunday night. The Ravens' MVP candidate threw for five touchdowns and ran for 86 yards as the Jets were blown out by the Ravens, 42-21

And what else would anyone expect with the Jets playing with no Jamal Adams, no Quinnen Williams, no Brian Poole, and the usual patchwork cast at linebacker and cornerback. They played hard and were actually much better in the second half, but all that was just way too much to overcome. Jackson, taken 29 spots after the Jets took Sam Darnold in the 2018 draft, was everything he was advertised to be. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 212 yards and averaged nearly 11 yards per rush. When he took off with the ball, either to run or throw, the Jets had no one that could keep up.

That's not really surprising considering that Adams, Poole and Williams are three of the best athletes on the Jets' defense. Had they had a full complement of players, Gregg Williams could have used Adams as a spy. That at least might have slowed Jackson down a little bit and minimized the damage, if nothing else.

The Jets have tough matchup against the Baltimore Ravens and their MVP candidate in Lamar Jackson on a short work week, as the two team faceoff on Thursday Night Football in Week 15.

Jackson, the final quarterback taken in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, where Jets QB Sam Darnold was selected third overall, poses a challenge for any defense because of his dynamic playmaking skills.

But Jets head coach Adam Gase knows it's just as important to keep up with an opposing offense sometimes as it is to shut them down. That's the case with the Ravens and Jackson, the coach said on Monday.

Down the stretch of the New York Jets' 22-21 win over the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Sam Darnold did not flinch.

With an assist from kicker Sam Ficken, who nailed consecutive fourth-quarter tries from 42 and 44 yards -- the latter as time expired -- Darnold engineered back-to-back scoring drives, including the game-winning march, as the Jets (5-8) held off the Dolphins (3-10) Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

"I think it's huge, especially when you practice that situation so much in the offseason," Darnold said of the Jets' 49-yard drive in seven plays and 1:33 to down the Dolphins. "To be able to execute that in a real game, it's huge for our confidence. At the same time, we practice it all the time, so we just went out there and did our job. (Wide receiver) Vyncint (Smith) made a great play out there and obviously Sam did a great job kicking the ball."

Odell Beckham Jr. might just have talked his way out of another city and another franchise, and that opens up some tantalizing possibilities. He still is -- when his body is healthy and his mind is right -- one of the best receivers in football.

The Jets, of course, really do need a No. 1 receiver.

But what they don't need is a Beckham-sized headache.

Jets kicker Sam Ficken drilled a 44-yard field goal as time expired on Sunday to give the Jets a 22-21 win over the Dolphins.

The third year kicker from Penn State was 3-for-3 on field goals for the day, while going 1-for-2 on extra points.

After the game, Ficken was all smiles as he received praise from head coach Adam Gase and quarterback Sam Darnold.

Christopher Johnson has already promised that Adam Gase won't be fired and he'll be the Jets coach at the start of next season. There are no indications at all that the Jets CEO is willing to change his mind, no matter what happens down the stretch of the season.

But Gase sure has to be stretching his boss' patience.

Gase needed an absolute gift from the Dolphins and the officials to avoid what would have been another embarrassing loss on Sunday. The Jets won when a pass interference non-call was overturned on replay, giving them another shot to get into game-winning field goal range. Then, Sam Ficken nailed a 44-yarder as time expired to give the Jets a 22-21 win.
