The Browns left last Monday's game at MetLife Stadium with a win over the Jets, but one of their star players also left with a hefty fine to pay.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, a former number one overall pick, was flagged twice during Monday's 23-3 win over the Jets for personal fouls committed against Jets QB Trevor Siemian.

The second foul, which occurred in the second quarter, resulted in Siemian suffering ligament damage in his ankle, ending his first season in New York shortly after it had begun. Garrett fell on Siemian with his full weight, and the quarterback's ankle got caught underneath him on the way down. The injury left the Jets with Luke Falk as their only healthy QB, who will now get the start this weekend in New England as Sam Darnold continues to recover from mono.

With Sam Darnold missing his second consecutive game with mononucleosis and Trevor Siemian out the rest of the season due to ligament tears in his ankle that he suffered in Monday night's loss against the Browns, the Jets have turned to QB Luke Falk, who will make his first start of his career this Sunday afternoon.

And what a game to make your first career start it will be, because not only are the Jets on the road, but they will be facing the reigning Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in Foxborough.

Falk, taken with the 199th pick in the 2018 draft by the Titans, will be taking a similar start to his career as the pass thrower on the opposing sidelines--Tom Brady. Like Falk, Brady was also taken with the 199th pick in the draft, and also made his first career start in Foxborough, Mass--albeit in Foxboro Stadium, and not Gillette Stadium.

Jets QB Sam Darnold has remained out due to mono. Due to the nature of the illness, a clear target date for his potential return has been hard to nail down. Here are the latest updates...

Sept. 18, 3:44 AM:

The biggest issue with Darnold's illness is the fact that the possibility of an enlarged spleen could be a side effect. Well, that's exactly what Darnold has.

He confirmed it during his press conference on Wednesday, saying it "needs to get a little smaller for me to play." An enlarged spleen is a serious matter, especially for someone playing a contact sport. Darnold can participate in non-contact activities, but if the enlarged spleen doesn't subside, he won't be able to go out there. So time will tell.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his mono diagnosis, Jets QB Sam Darnold gave an update on his health on Tuesday.

Appearing on The Michael Kay Show, Darnold explained that he's hopeful he can return for the Jets' Week 5 matchup in Philadelphia.

While Week 5 seems to make sense, with the Jets coming off their early by week, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has noted that Darnold's absence could stretch until Week 7, based on what he's heard from doctors.

As rookie quarterback Daniel Jones takes over the Giants' offense for 17th-year veteran Eli Manning, a decision announced Tuesday by New York, the crosstown starter has an idea of what the transition will be like.

Just last year, fresh off the Jets making him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Sam Darnold ascended to the top of the depth chart and began his rookie season with the Jets as the team's starter.

Now in his second year with New York while he works back from mononucleosis, Darnold understands that the news can be tough for Manning to process, but the development should only help Jones as the Giants move forward.

There has been quarterback carnage all around the NFL early this season and plenty of teams that probably could use a veteran like Eli Manning if he were available.

But Manning has a full no-trade clause in his contract, and according to multiple sources he has no immediate plans to waive it.

At least not yet.

Jets QB Sam Darnold will remain inactive for Week 3 against the Patriots, but he is making progress in his return from mono.

Darnold, who had been quarantined since his illness was diagnosed, was at the Jets' facility on Tuesday, head coach Adam Gase said, adding that Darnold is "feeling better."

"We will really have a better idea (of when Darnold can return) when the doctors give us the green light that he can progress," Gase said. "The doctors are letting us know when to proceed with him."

Trevor Siemian will have an MRI on his ankle Tuesday morning, but the injury sure didn't look good. Sam Darnold is already out with mono, possibly until late October. That leaves Luke Falk, who made his NFL debut on Monday night, as the only quarterback on the roster.

So yes, the Jets need help at quarterback and they need it quickly.

Unfortunately, quarterbacks aren't exactly easy to find.

OK, now what?

It was bad enough when the Jets learned quarterback Sam Darnold was out indefinitely with mono, but now they've lost backup quarterback Trevor Siemian, too. He suffered what looked like a nasty ankle injury in the first half of the Jets' 23-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. That forced the Jets to turn to Luke Falk, who had been promoted from the practice squad earlier in the day.

The Jets lost quarterback Trevor Siemian in the second quarter of their Monday Night Football matchup against the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium due to injury.

Scrambling to his right, Siemian was hit by Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett and his ankle was caught underneath his body and folded awkwardly. The play occurred on a third-and-16 play and the hit earned Garrett a roughing the passer penalty.

Siemian was 3-for-6 passing with only three yards prior to exiting the game, which he was starting in place of quarterback Sam Darnold, who is currently sidelined while he battles mono.

With the health of QB Sam Darnold up in the air for the next few weeks, the Jets announced Monday afternoon that they've signed Luke Falk to the active roster, and in turn, have waived S Bennett Jackson.

Falk is now set to back up Trevor Siemian tonight, as the Jets host the Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. at MetLife Stadium for Monday Night Football.

The second-year man of out Washington State performed well for the Jets during the preseason, completing 80.6 percent of his passes (29-of-36) for 230 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Sam Darnold will definitely be out against the Browns on Monday night, as he continues to deal with mono. But, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, he doesn't think he'll be out too long.

Sources have told Mort that Darnold is saying he's "already feeling better," and he is aiming for a Week 5 return against the Eagles following the bye week.

That's all great to hear, but that's a bold statement there considering how serious of an illness mono is. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has two doctors telling him that Week 5 would definitely be a stretch considering the recovery Darnold has to go through. Instead, those doctors believe a Week 7 return against the Patriots is a more likely outcome.

The Jets decided not to put Sam Darnold on injured reserve because that would've required him to miss the next eight weeks and, according to Jets coach Adam Gase, the quarterback's expected absence is "not going to be that long."

But it could be close.

Though many initially assumed that, after the 22-year-old Darnold was diagnosed with mono, he would return in Week 5 -- right after the Jets bye week -- the Jets just aren't sure he'll be able to be back that quickly. The truth is the Jets don't know yet when to expect him back, multiple sources said.

Adam Gase 1-on-1 00:02:01
SNY's Jeane Coakley talks with Jets Head Coach Adam Gase on rallying the team after last week's loss and several injuries to key players

While the Jets technically had an extra 24 hours to get C.J. Mosley ready to return for Monday's 8:15 p.m. matchup with the Cleveland Browns after a groin injury in the past weekend's 17-16 loss against the Buffalo Bills, the clock was ticking on the linebacker's decision, which came Saturday.

After the team took Friday off, New York resumed practice Saturday and in the afternoon ruled the linebacker -- as well as defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (sprained left ankle) -- out for Monday's game.

Mosley, who sat out the week while he worked his way back, needed to get back on the field Saturday or else he would jeopardize his status for Monday.

Jets head coach Adam Gase updated the status of Sam Darnold, who will not be getting placed on IR.

"It's not going to be that long," Gase said on Friday about Darnold's absence due to mono.

Had Darnold been placed on the IR, he wouldn't have been eligible to return until Week 9.

Sunday's 1 p.m. kickoff at MetLife Stadium between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills just got a bit more interesting.

A day after Pat Shurmur said Wednesday that Bills quarterback Josh Allen "had a chance to be a starter," repeating the head coach's take on the Wyoming product as the Giants evaluated the position ahead of the 2018 NFL draft, the Bills took notice.

According to Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic, a tweet published by NFL Network's Kimberly Jones with Shurmur's comments about Allen appeared on televisions displayed inside the Bills' facility Thursday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - One of Adam Gase's top priorities in the offseason was finding an experienced quarterback to back up Sam Darnold, and the guy he wanted from the beginning was Trevor Siemian.

This is why.

"He's exactly what smart teams want in a backup quarterback," one AFC scout told SNY on Thursday night. "Experience. He's done it before and done it well. There's no learning curve. Just plug him in and go to work."

Jets head coach Adam Gase delivered news that Sam Darnold has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, and will not only miss Monday's bout against the Browns, but they're expecting him to be out for some time.

So just how long will that be? Well, Dr. Aaron E. Glatt -- chair of medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital -- gave his professional opinion on that matter.

"So everybody's different," Glatt told SNY on Thursday. "Individuals may do very, very well. They may feel almost right away. Others take a week or two, sometimes even longer still feeling fatigued, still feeling tired, not having their normal level of energy back to where they normally are at a baseline.

New Jets talk new roles 00:01:16
Trevor Siemian talks about stepping in as Jets starting quarterback, and Demaryius Thomas looks to show that he "still can play ball."

Six days before the Jets' Week 2 matchup with the Cleveland Browns, Trevor Siemian learned he was getting the start at quarterback.
With Sam Darnold sidelined for at least this Monday with mono, the reigns of Adam Gase's offense are now in the hands of the 27-year-old veteran.

"Coach Gase gave me a call and said they were trying to figure out what was going on with Sam but to be ready. Got the news last night," Siemian said on Thursday.

"I honestly felt for Sam. That's a tough deal, man. Just because I've seen him, since I've been here the last several months, put his heart soul and mind into this. It's been kind of rewarding for me, because I feel like I was a young player and seeing (Darnold's) progress from Year 1 to Year 2, I was excited for him and I still am."

"He's not going anywhere. He'll be back soon, but that was the first thing I thought of, feeling for Sam and hoping he makes a speedy recovery."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - When the doctors came to Jets head coach Adam Gase on Wednesday night to talk about Sam Darnold, he said he had a feeling that his quarterback had mono. Somehow he just knew in his "gut" that the news was going to be bad.

Unfortunately for Gase, he was right.

And it's likely going to get much, much worse.

A lot has happened over the last seven days, but -- just as it seemed like things might finally start to settle down -- news broke that is likely to have wider-reaching consequences than everything that came before it.

Having been diagnosed with mononucleosis, Sam Darnold will miss Monday night's game and will almost certainly miss next Sunday's divisional clash with the New England Patriots. Although the bye week follows that, the possibility remains that he could end up missing more than just those two games.

This brings backup Trevor Siemian into the spotlight. Siemian, who was signed during the offseason, is now the starter with Luke Falk set to be activated from the practice squad to back him up. Both put up solid numbers in preseason, albeit with and against backups and mostly by "dinking and dunking."

While head coach Adam Gase confirmed the terrible news that Quincy Enunwa was out for the season, he also revealed some other injury updates with his players heading into practice on Wednesday.

The two players we knew about -- LB C.J. Mosley and DT Quinnen Williams -- and both are "progressing really fast" with their ailments. Mosley came out late in the third quarter and missed the entire fourth quarter with a groin injury, while Williams is dealing with an ankle injury. He walked out of MetLife Stadium on Sunday in a walking boot.

Also, QB Sam Darnold was actually sent home today, as he continues to deal with an illness. Gase said his quarterback is still "kinda contagious," so it's more of a precautionary measure.

The Jets reportedly completed a trade on Wednesday afternoon, bringing veteran wide receiver Demaryius Thomas aboard to boost the available weapons at quarterback Sam Darnold's disposal.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this trade is the fact that the Jets would deal with their divisional rivals in New England. It seems implausible that the Patriots would be willing to give the Jets a player that they think can help them, especially only for a late-round pick that they won't receive until 2021.

Nevertheless, Adam Gase will have been keen to target Thomas, who was his best receiver when he made a name for himself as the Broncos' defensive coordinator. In Gase's first year in that role, Thomas caught a career-high 14 touchdown passes and then posted career highs for catches (111) and receiving yards (1,619) in their second year together.

Since Sunday's game, there's been a lot of attention centered around the team's kicking woes. Kaare Vedvik, who the Jets picked up to stop the bleeding in that department, missed both his attempts -- a 45-yard field goal and an extra point.

On Tuesday, though, the Jets brought in their fourth kicker of the year in Sam Ficken after hosting multiple players at the team facility. So with that (hopefully) settled, here are some other issues the Jets will need to focus on:

With a day to process Sunday's 17-16 loss against the Buffalo Bills, Jets head coach Adam Gase did not hold back when he was asked about his team's shortcomings in the season opener.

Among the players and coaches singled out by Gase, Robby Anderson shouldered part of the offense's blame after the fourth-year wide receiver recorded three receptions for 23 yards on seven targets.

Anderson came to Gase's mind after New York's first-year head coach fielded a question about the offense's ineptitude, which was highlighted by second-year quarterback Sam Darnold's lack of a deep threat.

Jets react to tough 17-16 loss 00:01:23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Sam Darnold got out of the Jets' game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night in one piece.

And that's pretty much the best thing that can be said about his game and the Jets' offense in their 28-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night.

Right from the start, Darnold and the Jets' offense looked as out of sync as they've been all preseason. There were fumbles, breakdowns, bad throws, drops, and more than enough bad blocking to go around. Yes, he still didn't have Le'Veon Bell in his arsenal, and he was also missing three-fifths of his starting offensive line.

Le'Veon Bell has his first Jets touchdown.

With a red zone opportunity, Sam Darnold found Bell on third and goal through the air, where he made a great grab and waltzed into the end zone to tally the offense's first touchdown of the season.

The arrival of Sam Darnold gave Jets fans something they had been lacking for years: Hope. And that hope for the future got stronger as the new franchise quarterback got better late in his rookie season.

Now, that hope has become excitement and expectation. Even Darnold admits things are different this season. Even he knows that what he did last season was just the start.

"I think I was in a different place," the 22-year-old said. "Just being a rookie going into my first game, I was just feeling a little bit different. I wasn't nearly as comfortable as I am now."

Darnold feels ready for week one 00:00:52
Sam Darnold and Adam Gase speak ahead of their week one matchup against the Bills. The offense is finding it's way at the right time.

Heading into the Week 1 meeting with the Bills, there's plenty of intrigue about how the Jets' new-look offense will operate under the command of head coach Adam Gase.

Every play, of course, will start in the hands of Sam Darnold, whose confidence is sky high heading into his second pro season.

"We have a ton of confidence. A ton of confidence not only in the coaching staff and the game plan that we have going into Week One, but just in ourselves too," Darnold said on Thursday. "We have a ton of confidence in ourselves and for me, I have a ton of trust in the O-line that they'll protect and I have a ton of trust that everyone is going to be in the right spot, doing the right things.

"I do think it's a testament to how well we practiced in OTA's, training camp and now going into Week One, we had a good preseason. We're ready to roll."

The Jets are four days away from kicking off their new season full of anticipation and expectation. And a lot of that stems from the addition of star RB Le'Veon Bell

Among all the changes that the Jets went through this offseason -- from hiring head coach Adam Gase to GM Joe Douglas taking over for Mike Maccagnan -- it has been Bell as the main focal point. Many are anxiously awaiting to see if he still has that elite talent we saw two years ago to impact the Jets this season.

Bell hasn't been able to give the fans any proof that will be the case, as he was kept out of preseason games. But he's ready for a grand entrance back into the NFL on Sunday against the Bills after what he told Gase.

The Jets' offseason featured more than enough storylines to last for years.

They fired one coach, then hired a new one. Then they fired a GM, and hired a new one. Along the way, they spent well over $100 million in guaranteed money in free agency, bringing their total to well over $200 million over the last two years.

Their hope -- their belief -- is that all of that turmoil and transition will pay off this season with their first playoff berth since 2010. Of course, a lot still has to happen for the Jets to get there.

Sam Darnold likes new offense 00:01:20
New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is excited to run Adam Gase's offense against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

As the Jets prepare to open up the season against the Buffalo Bills, quarterback Sam Darnold appears primed to showcase a new-look offense drawn up by head coach Adam Gase and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

"I think we're going to do some fun things out there with all the tempo and all the different things we can do," Darnold said, "It's going to be fun and hopefully we can put up a lot of points."

"For me, going up against that same Buffalo defense that I went up against last year, it's going to be fun to see the different looks that they bring me and different kind of pressures."

Gase happy with Jets' core 00:01:09
New York Jets head coach Adam Gase explains why he is happy with the Jets core players heading into this season.

The Jets rounded out their 2019 preseason schedule with a 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.

Here are some of the key takeaways from Thursday's finale:

- Trevor Siemian got the start for the Jets at quarterback with Sam Darnold not suiting up. He played just one drive, though, that ended without points. With Luke Falk and Davis Webb potentially battling for a third quarterback spot (if the Jets elect to keep three on the active roster), it was Falk who got the call first. Falk played the remainder of the first half, going 13-for-18 for 91 yards. He certainly didn't make any awe-inspiring plays, but he didn't turn the ball over or make any poor mistakes either.

The Jets are hoping quarterback Sam Darnold takes the next step forward in his career in 2019. A lot is riding on the second-year pro.

Oddsmakers already think there's going to be improvement.

BetOnline released over/ unders for their individual prop bets and there's a bode of confidence from them in regards to Darnold. In comparison to his rookie numbers, oddsmakers foresee plenty of them going up.

Before becoming the head coach of the Dolphins, current Jets head coach Adam Gase formed a formidable duo with quarterback Peyton Manning during his time with the Broncos.

It's well known that Gase rose the coaching ranks via Manning. That helped Gase land his current gig with the Jets. Quarterback Sam Darnold is aware of it, too. That's caused Darnold to ask one question pretty often, according to ESPN

During their meetings, Gase said that Darnold often asks him, "How would Peyton do this?"

Only a select few starters will suit up for the Jets against the Eagles on Thursday night - and those are probably ones who have yet to play much this summer.

For everyone else, including quarterback Sam Darnold, the preseason is over. For some, like running back Le'Veon Bell, it never really began.

Jets talk making improvements 00:01:37
Gase, Darnold and Bertolet on continuing to improve the Jets offense and Bertolet trying to solidify kicking game

Darnold and Bell potential 00:00:58
Sam Darnold and Le'Veon Bell are complimentary of each other and can't wait to play together in a game this season for the Jets.

Sam Darnold and Le'Veon Bell's chemistry this season will be vital for the Jets' offense to flourish. Yet, these two won't be able to truly test that until Week 1 of the regular season.

Head coach Adam Gase has already made it known that Bell won't be seeing any preseason snaps, especially after what happened to Avery Williamson in the last preseason bout against the Falcons. The Jets lost him for the season due to a torn ACL, something Gase took the blame for after saying he wanted to take him out a series earlier.

So Darnold and Bell must continue to mend their bond during practice reps. But Darnold admitted after practice on Wednesday that there are some things that only game action can show Bell about Gase's offense.

Jets RB Le'Veon Bell won't play until Week 1 of the regular season against the Bills, but he said on Wednesday that he doesn't think there will be any negative impact to not playing during the preseason -- even after sitting out all of 2018.

"I don't think me getting four plays in the preseason is gonna help me in Week 1 for the game," Bell said. "It's gonna be me just getting ready for playing and practice. When the game comes, then I'll be ready."

Bell said that his teammates will be aggressive with him in practice and go after the ball in order to help him get ready for game situations, adding that he just wants to "go out there and show everyone I'm the same player."

Former Jets quarterback Josh McCown, who retired in June after spending the last two of his 16 professional seasons with the team, has now decided to un-retire according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. McCown will sign a one year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, making them his eleventh NFL team. The contract includes $2 million fully guaranteed and could be worth up to $5.4 million, per source.

Last season with the Jets, he appeared in four games after starter Sam Darnold was out with a foot injury. McCown had been a strong mentor for the No. 3 pick in the 2018 Draft, and had spoken very highly of him.

"I root for those guys, and I want to see Sam have a lot of success. Now he has to make it happen. If he needs me, I'm only a phone call away," McCown said.

New Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said this week that he hasn't really started bringing the pressure with his play-calls yet.

All that changed on Thursday night.

Actually, it didn't matter because he was getting plenty of pressure from his defensive line, but Williams turned up the heat in the second game of the preseason. The Jets were all over Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan in a 22-10 win in Atlanta. They sacked him three times on the 17 times he dropped back to pass, and pressured him on almost every other pass. He was still 10 of 14 for 118 yards thanks to his talent and a porous Jets secondary. But by the time he left, one thing was clear:

Darnold talks exciting offense 00:01:08
New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold explains the impact running backs Le'Veon Bell and Ty Montgomery will have in Jets offense.

Through two preseason games, the Jets have looked strong on both sides of the ball.

Sam Darnold and the first-team offense have shown efficiency moving the ball down the field, and Gregg Williams' defense proved on Thursday that they can bring the heat on opposing quarterbacks.

One glaring issue for the Jets through these two games, though, has been their kicking game.

The Jets wide receiver room doesn't exactly scare anyone from top-to-bottom, but there's talent.

The top-three targets for quarterback Sam Darnold on the outside are Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder and Quincy Enunwa. In that group, New York head coach Adam Gase doesn't want or see football players.

Instead, Gase wants basketball players, and he thinks he's got them.

Darnold talks Gase relationship 00:01:33
New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold discusses the relationship he has with new head coach Adam Gase and what's he's learned from him.

Sam Darnold had an impressive preseason debut last Thursday, and that may have a lot to do with his relationship with head coach Adam Gase.

The second-year quarterback was recently asked to describe what he enjoys the most about getting to know his new head coach, and Darnold explained that Gase has offered him advice pertaining to both on the field and off of it.

"He's crazy in the best way. I think we all are," Darnold said about his head coach. "You've got to be a little crazy in this profession, and it's fun to be able to gameplan with him, talk about football, but the coolest thing is being able to talk to him about things outside football - family life, friends and family, all of that kind of stuff."

Namath on Darnold's improvement 00:01:10
New York Jets Hall of Fame QB Joe Namath discusses the expectations and improvement he's seen in starting quarterback Sam Darnold.

If there's anyone who knows what it takes to play quarterback for the Jets, it's probably the man who was under center for the team's lone Super Bowl appearance and victory.

And Joe Namath continues to be impressed by the player who is now taking snaps for Gang Green some 50 years later, Sam Darnold.

"I liked what I saw of him physically when he was at Southern Cal before he got here," Namath said. "When he got here, I liked what the coaches and players had to say about him.

Following the first week of the exhibition season in the NFL, the optimism surrounding both of New York's football teams is through the roof.

The Jets' Sam Darnold led a single drive that was near perfect, as the second-year pro was 4-for-5 passing with a touchdown. The Giants' once looked down upon rookie QB in Daniel Jones was one pass better, as he was 5-for-5 passing with a touchdown.

So... Jets vs. Giants Super Bowl?

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold said following his team's preseason opener against the Giants last week that he's hoping the first-team offense gave fans a "taste" of what's to come in 2019.

The second-year QB was 4-for-5 passing in the game with a touchdown pass. Running back Le'Veon Bell didn't play in the game and the starters only played one series. Regardless, the group left a good impression.

The Jets will continue their exhibition season on Thursday against the Falcons and head coach Adam Gase revealed that the team will probably give fans a bigger taste than it did in Week 1.
