Former Seton Hall guard Derrick Gordon says he was blackballed by the NBA because he's gay, but a number of NBA scouts felt he was simply not a prospect worthy of getting an NBA workout.

"He's not an NBA player based on skillset and ability level," one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv, adding that Gordon was a "good and tough kid."

Several other scouts told SNY.tv that Gordon simply was not a "draftable prospect" and wasn't worthy of a summer-league invitation as a result.

Seton Hall has added former Wake Forest guard Madison Jones for the 2016-17 academic year, sources told SNY.tv.

The 6-foot-1 Jones will be a graduate student and will help fortify a backcourt that lost sophomore point guard Isaiah Whitehead to the NBA Draft. Seton Hall returns rising junior guard Khadeen Carrington and will add 2016 signee Eron Gordon for the fall and Kansas State transfer Jevon Thomas at the semester break.

Sources said Seton Hall still has a scholarship available for 6-10 power forward Taurean Thompson, who is expected to announce between Seton Hall, Syracuse and Michigan State.

Seton Hall may be on the brink of losing one guard, but added another on Monday.

With Isaiah Whitehead set to announce his NBA Draft plans on Thursday, Seton Hall has signed Eron Gordon, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Indianapolis (IN) North Central. The No. 21-ranked shooting guard in the Class of 2016 according to 247Sports.com, Gordon also considered Missouri, Texas Tech and Maryland.

Gordon is the younger brother of New Orleans Pelicans guard Eric Gordon.

CHICAGO -- Isaiah Whitehead hasn't formally signed with an agent and has until May 25 to return to school, but the Seton Hall sophomore guard says he's "100 percent" gone if he gets a promise to be chosen in the first round of next month's NBA Draft.

"Oh yeah, 100 percent," Whitehead said Thursday at the NBA Draft Combine after going for 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting with 5 assists, 3 rebounds and no turnovers in a 109-69 victory. "You can't give up opportunities like that. I mean, when they tell you it's time to go, you just gotta go."

He added to SNY.tv: "And anybody at Seton Hall would have to agree with me. When they tell you that you're a first-round pick, you can't turn that down."

Following an official visit to UConn this past week, Taurean Thompson will take one to Seton Hall on Sunday and Monday.

"I know Coach [Shaheen] Holloway and Coach [Kevin] Willard well," he said last week. "Seton Hall had a great year, they won the Big East Tournament. Coach Willard's real cool, coach Shaheen is cool. I've been there a bunch of times and it's like a family over there."

The 6-foot-10 forward from Brewster (N.H.) Academy went off for 27 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks en route to co-MVP honors as Team New York beat Team East, 148-128, in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game on April 15 at Barclays Center.

NEW YORK -- Seton Hall signee Myles Powell scored 17 points on 7-of-21 shooting from the floor, as Team East lost to Team New York 148-128 at the Jordan Brand Classic Regional Game at the Barclays Center Friday night. The sharpshooter was 3-of-14 from behind the arc.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Powell is still working his back into shape after re-injuring the left foot he broke in October. He re-injured it in February.

Powell will join a talented core of juniors - Khadeen Carrington, Desi Rodriguez, Angel Delgado and potentially Isaiah Whitehead - that won the Big East Tournament by defeating Villanova, the eventual national champions.

NEW YORK -- On Friday night in Brooklyn, a gym full of spectators and the country's top college coaches crowded around Trevon Duval in the Under Armour Association event at Basketball City.

The class of 2017 ESPN top-ranked point guard did not disappoint.

Duval went off for 24 points - showing some serious range on a few three point buckets - while dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds as his team We-R1 defeated Team Beast Mode 71-50. As good as advertised, Duval displayed a bevy of quick handle moves and crossovers that left his defenders grasping at air.

It promises to be an eventful couple of days for Isaiah Whitehead.

On Tuesday morning, the 6-foot-5, 208-pound Seton Hall sophomore won the Haggerty Award presented to the top Division 1 player by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. In beating out other top contenders like Stony Brook's Jameel Warney, Iona's A.J. English and Monmouth's Justin Robinson, Whitehead became the first Pirate to win the award since Andre Barrett in 2004.

Warney, English, Robinson, Sacred Heart's Cane Broome (who has since transferred to Cincinnati), Columbia's Maodo Lo and Hofstra's Juan'ya Green made up the rest of the first-team All-Met.

DENVER -- Ten years of waiting boiled down to 40 minutes of game play for the Seton Hall Pirates Thursday night at the Pepsi Center.

The No. 6 seeded Pirates were bounced from their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 as quickly as they got there - losing to No. 11 seed Gonzaga, 68-52, in the first round.

Isaiah Whitehead, the man responsible for steering the Pirate ship to a Big East Tournament championship, ended the game with 10 points. Whitehead shot 4-24 from the field, including an NCAA Tournament record-tying 0--for-10 clip from three-point range.

DENVER -- After winning the Big East Tournament championship at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, Isaiah Whitehead got a text from an old friend and teammate.

Kamari Murphy, a redshirt junior forward for Miami and Whitehead's former Lincoln High school teammate, was texting to offer congratulations.

"I mean Kamari's always been a brother to me basically since I was a freshman in high school when we played on the same team," the 6-foot-4 Whitehead said in Denver where Seton Hall will play Gonzaga in a first-round Midwest Region game on Thursday. "But I've been following him a lot, he's been having a tremendous season so far. I mean, he just hit me up after the Big East Tournament and told me to keep ballin', just keep playing my game. Just stay confident and all the good things will happen."

No surprise, really, but former Seton Hall coach P.J. Carlesimo is picking the Pirates to take out Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Denver.

"The Hall's got a lot of weapons...I think it's going to be an excellent game," Carlesimo said Wednesday on SportsCenter. "It's really sad one of them is going down in the first round, but I gotta go with The Hall. They both won their tournaments, but what The Hall did, beating Xavier and Villanova back-to-back at Madison Square Garden, Kevin [Willard's] got them playing really well."

Carlesimo, of course, led Seton Hall to the 1989 NCAA championship game where it lost to Michigan. During his tenure, the Pirates also won Big East Tournament championships in 1991 and '93.

NEW YORK -- If Seton Hall wins its first Big East tournament championship since 1993 on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, the school may want to send Steve Lavin a case of his favorite red wine.

After Lavin said on air that the young team might not be able to handle Creighton's changing defenses, Isaiah Whitehead and company have now rattled off back-to-back wins over No. 6 Creighton and No. 2 Xavier to advance to the Big East title game against No. 1 Villanova.

NEW YORK -- While Seton Hall was busy winning the biggest game of the Kevin Willard Era on Sunday afternoon at the Prudential Center, Tiny Morton was watching the game on TV in a Manhattan restaurant with his Lincoln High School players.

During the Seton Hall game, Morton and Lincoln were awaiting their own contest, which turned out to be a 96-54 beatdown of Queens High School of Teaching in the PSAL AA quarterfinals at Baruch. Lincoln will next meet Westinghouse in the semifinals on Saturday at St. John's.

NEWARK -- In the biggest win of the Kevin Willard Era, a 90-81 statement victory over No. 5 Xavier that all but solidified an NCAA Tournament bid for Seton Hall, the Pirates once again road the coattails of a star sophomore from Brooklyn's Abraham Lincoln High School.

Only this time, it may not have been the player many would assume.

While Isaiah Whitehead continued on his First Team All-Big East pace, finishing with 22 points -- his fifth 20-plus point performance over his last seven games -- it was high school teammate Desi Rodriguez who stole the show in front of a sold-out crowd at the Prudential Center on Sunday.

NEW YORK --- St. John's may have entered Sunday's contest with a terrible 1-13 mark in Big East play, but the tilt at Madison Square Garden might as well have been a playoff game for Seton Hall.

After squandering a massive first-half lead, the Pirates edged the Johnnies 62-61 on the strength of two clutch free throws from sophomore Isaiah Whitehead with five seconds left, sparing Seton Hall from a loss that could have hurt their NCAA Tournament chances.

"It's a huge win just because if we lost, it would have damaged our resume," Whitehead told reporters after the game. "I'm really proud of us being down with seconds left and actually coming back and winning the game."

Seton Hall defeated St. John's, 79-60, on Wednesday night and describes building off the win in the games ahead.

NEWARK -- If Seton Hall is going to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, it will need to win as many games as possible in the Big East Conference and probably finish at least 9-9.

After a rough stretch in which they faced four ranked teams -- Villanova twice and Providence and Xavier once each -- the Pirates returned home to face struggling St. John's on Wednesday night at the Prudential Center.

Led by Angel Delgado's 15 points and 17 rebounds and Isaiah Whitehead's 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, the Pirates handled the Red Storm, 79-60, to improve to 14-6 and 4-4 in the Big East. St. John's (7-14, 0-8) dropped its 11th straight under first-year coach Chris Mullin.

NEWARK --At one point during Seton Hall's 82-67 blowout loss to Creighton on Saturday, a disheartened fan yelled down toward the Pirates bench, "Feels like last year, Willard."

That would be a reference to last year's second-half collapse under head coach Kevin Willard, in which the Pirates imploded and lost 12 of their final 15 games amid locker room discord after peaking in the Top 25.

There's a long way to go in this season, but the Pirates and their fans better hope there is no repeat performance.

As embarrassing as Rutgers' 84-55 loss to New Jersey rival Seton Hall on its home floor was on Saturday, it may not be the most disturbing thing about Eddie Jordan's program at the moment.

To be sure, the loss -- the second straight in which Kevin Willard's team drilled Rutgers -- was pretty damning.

When Seton Hall sophomore guard Khadeen Carrington steps on the floor on Saturday at the RAC, the Pirates' Garden State Hardwood Classic match-up with Rutgers will mean a lot in more ways than one.

The rivalry speaks for itself, but Carrington will see someone familiar on the other side in Rutgers red, his high school teammate and friend Mike Williams. The two played together at Bishop Loughlin High School, and made for quite a duo.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Taurean Thompson, a 6-foot-10 power forward at Brewster (N.H.) Academy, says two schools are working the hardest for his services right now.

"I'm been really just talking to Seton Hall and Syracuse," Thompson said after going for 19 points and six rebounds as Brewster topped Sunrise Christian Academy, 71-64, at the National Prep Showcase at Albertus Magnus College.

Asked if those were the two main schools on his list, he said, "Yeah, I guess so. I've been on an official to Syracuse and I've been to Seton Hall a bunch of times."

Ranked the No. 11 center by 247Sports.com, Thompson is a Manhattan native who transferred from St. Anthony's before the season because of what he called "a lot of personal stuff involved.

"It wasn't really the school, but it was really a lot of personal stuff going on," he said of leaving the school led by Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley.

Now he loves Brewster and head coach Jason Smith.

"It was a smooth adjustment and I'm getting better," he said.

As for Syracuse and Seton Hall, Thompson likes aspects of both schools.

"Syracuse, the tradition," he said. "Coach [Jim] Boeheim is a great coach."

They have told him he would fit well into the 2-3 zone.

"They say they see me as a high-post, face-up guy, especially Syracuse," he said. "They like me because of my length in the 2-3 [zone]."

Thompson said he's friendly with Syracuse freshman Malachi Richardson and Frank Howard.

Seton Hall is also a factor "because they have a lot of young players, too," Thompson said.

"I've talked to Isaiah [Whitehead] a little bit," he said. "I know Khadeen [Carrington] and Desi [Rodriguez] as well."

Thompson also said he's open to new schools.

"Nobody's really contacted me of late," he said. "I got an offer from Providence but they haven't really talked to me of late, so right now it's just those two."

As of now, he's targeting a decision in the spring.

"Probably mid-spring," he said.

NEWARK - For Seton Hall, last year was a tale of two teams. Through the first half of the season, the Pirates were 13-3, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament well within their sight. However the team went 3-12 to finish the season and failed to qualify for the Big Dance. Entering his sixth season as Seton Hall's head coach, Kevin Willardis still looking for his first visit to the NCAA Tournament.

During the season opener, it was unclear which Seton Hall team we'd see this year. In what was supposed to be an easy victory, Seton Hall was unable to pull away from Dartmouth in the first half before ultimately winning 84-67.

Isaiah Whitehead went for 18 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Derrick Gordon, making his Pirates debut, had 14 points and 5 assists, Khadeen Carrington scored 13 and Desi Rodriguez 12.

Four-star recruit Myles Powell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Seton Hall beginning in the fall of 2016.

Powell, who committed in September, is on the ESPN Top 100 list for Class of 2016 student-athletes, and is Seton Hall's first commit for its 2016 recruiting class. Powell is also ranked the third-best recruit in the state of New Jersey, and is considered one of the best three-point shooters in the country.

"We are very excited to welcome Myles into the Seton Hall Basketball family," head coach Kevin Willard said. "Myles has a tremendous shooting ability, and he also can beat his defenders off the dribble. He is a terrific young man who will fit in very well in our program and at the University."

NEW YORK - Of all the players in both the Underclassmen and Upperclassmen games at the Sharette Dixon Classic on Sunday night, Naz Reid may have the biggest upside of them all.

A 6-foot-9 sophomore at Roselle (N.J.) Catholic ranked the No. 5 power forward in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports.com, Reid has all the physical tools to make basketball his profession one day in the future.

"My idea of basketball is just to try to get way better and try to make it to the NBA," Reid said after he went for 20 points, including three 3-pointers, as the New Jersey underclassmen beat their New York counterparts, 96-89, at the Gauchos Gym. Markquis Nowell of Bishop Loughlin was the MVP with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Jahvon Quinerly wasn't born when the original Fab Five took the Michigan Wolverines to back-to-back NCAA championship games in the early 1990s.

But he's seen the ESPN "30 for 30" film and knows the storyline.

Seton Hall associate head coach Shaheen Holloway created some buzz this week by offering scholarships to a new Fab Five: the 6-foot Quinerly, 6-3 shooting guard Luther Muhammad, 6-6 small forward Louis King, 6-3 point guard Atiba Taylor and 6-9 power forward Naz Reid - all Class of 2018 prospects from the Sports U Team Izod AAU program.
