EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - When training camp opened back in July, John Mara was admittedly still stuck in a "nightmare". It had been nearly seven months since the Giants had ended their disastrous 3-13 season. But the memories were still painfully fresh.

"I haven't gotten over last season quite yet," he said. "I have to be honest about it -- I did not see it coming. I felt very good this time last year. I think most of you predicted that we were going to have a great season, some of you even predicted we'd go to the Super Bowl. I wasn't quite buying into that but I certainly did not see 3-13 coming.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - On the first play of practice, Will Hernandez, the Giants' feisty rookie guard, ended up grabbing the facemask of a linebacker, and they looked ready to fight until teammates and coaches rushed in to break it up.

That was Monday. The linebacker was his teammate, B.J. Goodson. And the practice was being run at half speed.

So imagine what could happen when the Giants and Lions begin three days of intense joint-practices in Allen Park, Mich., on Tuesday morning.

This is the first installment of Giants position previews for the upcoming 2018 season. This will be an in-depth look at each position heading into training camp that begins on July 25th.

The Rundown

The cornerbacks room was supposed to be the least of the Giants' problems last season, but we all know how that went. Guess they didn't get that memo.

Though the Giants' offensive acquisitions this offseason have generated the most talk, Big Blue hasn't been stingy bolstering their defense either.

The Giants were in need of a veteran presence in their linebackers room after the departures of Devon Kennard and Jonathan Casillas, and one of GM Dave Gettleman's first moves was to trade for LB Alec Ogletree. At 26, Ogletree has five NFL seasons with the Rams under his belt, where he recently wore the headset as the defense's playcaller.

Ogletree will likely be paired with B.J. Goodson, who wore the headset for the Giants as the MIKE linebacker last season. However, Goodson could only call out plays in limited time due to injuries. This season, though, Goodson is hoping to show the Giants the potential they saw when he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2016.

The linebackers corps for the Giants last season wasn't the scariest bunch at the second tier. Too many missed tackles and blown coverages left this group hopeless throughout the year.

Defensive captain Jonathan Casillas was supposed to lead the group in 2017, but injuries kept him sidelined for half the season as he racked up just 35 tackles in eight games. B.J. Goodson also had high expectations last season, but he saw one less game than Casillas.

With one game left in the season, the Giants have placed LB B.J. Goodson on IR.

To replace Goodson on the roster, the Giants signed WR Marquis Bundy off the practice squad.

The 24-year-old Goodson was limited to seven games this season due to leg injuries. He is the 22nd player to be placed on IR this season, after Landon Collins was placed on IR on Tuesday.

Landon Collins' season isn't over yet. But the end may be coming soon.

The Giants are still considering whether to shut down their star safety for the final three games after he re-injured his ankle on Sunday afternoon, according to interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo. Collins has been playing through a high ankle sprain since Week 5, and it he aggravated it on Sunday in the Giants' loss to the Cowboys.

Spagnuolo had already indicated on Monday that they might put the 23-year-old on injured reserve "to protect Landon from himself."

He made that declaration on Friday after practicing for the first time this week. He did not give any details about how he suffered the injury, or if was football-related. But he had the middle finger of his right hand tightly wrapped, and mostly kept it in his pocket during his interview.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | ArchiveThe Giants have a very short week, but their injury list remains very long.

Five starters, and one of the replacements for the injured starters, were on the list of Giants who did not practice on Monday as the Giants began their abbreviated preparation for their Thanksgiving night game against the Redskins (4-6) in Washington. That includes two starting offensive linemen who may not play, meaning the Giants could have to reshuffle a line that is already in a constant state of flux.

Justin Pugh was already expected to miss the next few weeks, according to multiple team sources. And now, according to NJ.com, G D.J. Fluker is expected to miss the game on Thursday night, too. That probably means G Jon Halapio would be in line for his first career start, though the Giants also could turn to veteran G John Greco whom they just signed last week.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Ben McAdoo wouldn't use the word "embarrassing" on Sunday. But after watching his defense give up 51 points to the Los Angeles Rams, Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had no problem using that word at all.

"There's a pit right here -- it's called an embarrassing pit," Spagnuolo said on Thursday. "We feel terrible about that and looking to get it corrected."

That might be easy if this were a one-game collapse, but really the Giants' 51-17 loss at home to the Rams was just the bottom (they hope) of an embarrassing season for Spagnuolo's once-proud defense. They were a Top 10 unit one year ago and brought back almost every key player. This year they are statistically the third-worst defense in the NFL and have now given up more than 400 yards in four of their last five games.

The defensive end was riding the stationary bike in the injury area at the start of practice on Thursday, before heading inside to work with trainers in the team's field house. It appeared that the trainers were working on his left shoulder -- which would make sense since he had a shoulder injury earlier in the season.

THE GAME

The Giants (1-6) vs. the Los Angeles Rams (5-2) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

That dark cloud that's been hovering over the Giants all season? Yeah, it'll be there Sunday. The forecast calls for "considerable cloudiness" and intermittent rain with a temperature in the low 60s. As if the crowd wasn't going to be small enough for this one ...

WHAT IT MEANS

There are really two ways this season can go for head coach Ben McAdoo. His team can show some fight, keep the games competitive and maybe steal a win or two. Or his team can surrender and start getting blown out. Now that they're back from their bye, whichever way they start out is likely where the rest of the games are headed. They are very undermanned now, and they know they have nothing to play for, so motivation won't be easy. Neither will be responding when things go wrong (and things will go wrong). It will be a test of McAdoo's coaching and leadership ability. How the team reacts may determine whether he keeps his job.

New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo (David Richard/AP)

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Giants don't like change. They prefer stability and patience. They prefer to give their plans a chance to work.

But they also really don't like chaos. And that's the one thing that will truly test their patience with Ben McAdoo and could end up pushing the coach straight out the door.

That may seem crazy just 17 games into his head coaching career, but McAdoo is suddenly on very shaky ground just one year after he led the Giants back to the postseason and to an 11-5 record. His job should be in no jeopardy at all just one-third of the way through Year 2, even though the Giants are 0-5 and headed towards at least 0-7.

Giants LB B.J. Goodson says he expects to practice Wednesday after missing the past two games with a shin injury, per NJ.com's James Kratch.

Goodson, who had a great season opener against the Cowboys, was a surprise to see listed as questionable before the Giants' game against the Lions. Head coach Ben McAdoo said it was an injury that occurred Friday before that Monday night game.

The injury was still nagging the sophomore linebacker before the Eagles game causing him to be inactive.

Goodson recorded a team-high 18 tackles in the Giants 19-3 loss in their season opener against the Cowboys.

Giants CB Janoris Jenkins (ankle) is improving but is questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

"Noticeably improved over the last week," Jenkins said. "I've been getting better. Just got to continue to go to treatment and we'll see how it plays out."

"I practiced a little bit (last week). I just didn't feel comfortable. I let the guys know it and then got on treatment a little heavier."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - For the second straight day, injured cornerback Janoris Jenkins wasn't even outside for Giants practice, casting a huge shadow of doubt over whether he'll be able to play in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

Jenkins suffered a hand and ankle injury in the Giants' opener, which apparently got worse as he practiced last week. Because despite practicing fully all week, he was unable to play in the Giants' loss to Detroit on Monday night. He tried to test out his injured ankle with trainers watching about two hours before the game, but they ultimately decided he could not go...

Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will make his season debut Monday against the Detroit Lions after he tested his sprained ankle during pregame warmups at MetLife Stadium.

Beckham will tape his ankles for stability for the first time in his career, according to ESPN's Eric Lundsten. Before the game, he was catching passes from quarterback Eli Manning and was seen stretching with strength coach Aaron Wellman alongside cornerback Janoris Jenkins and offensive guard D.J. Fluker.

Though Beckham was a limited participant in practice on Thursday and Friday, he will play in a game for the first time since Aug. 21 as the Giants look to avoid an 0-2 start.

Giants LB B.J. Goodson is out for the team's home opener against the Lions due to a shin injury, confirms SNY.tv's Ralph Vacchiano.

Goodson, who had a great season opener against the Cowboys, was a surprise to see listed as questionable on the team's injury report Saturday. However, head coach Ben McAdoo said it is an injury that occurred Friday at practice.

Scott Thompson, SNY.tv | Twitter | : This one hurts. If the defense had any bright spot last week against the Cowboys, it was B.J. Goodson and his 18 tackles. He was all over the field, and said that performance is what he brings to the table every night.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants knew they were returning almost all of their starters from last year's outstanding defense, but there was one player that Damon "Snacks" Harrison just wasn't sure about.

"I told him coming into this offseason that I wasn't a full believer in B.J. Goodson," Harrison said of the Giants new starting middle linebacker. "He was just a young guy at middle linebacker. You have to know everything. You have to get people in the right spots. He only played like 12 snaps last year so we didn't get a chance to see him. … It was just yet to be seen."

Then the 24-year-old Goodson had a strong offseason where he took control of a veteran-heavy defensive team. And then on opening night, during a 19-3 loss in Dallas, he was a dominant defensive force, making 18 tackles. Like all of the best middle linebackers the Giants have had, Goodson was all over the field.

The Giants defense may have been on the field for too long due to lack of offense, but they are not using it as an excuse for allowing 19 points in their loss to the Cowboys on Sunday night.

In the first half, the defense saw 47 plays from the Cowboys as the offense couldn't get anything going. The unit, which many believe to be one of the best in the NFL this season, looked fatigued. However, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie didn't want to hear that after the game.

"At some point you have to suck it up," Rodgers-Cromartie told The Post. "You just have to find a way to get off the field. We didn't get off the field enough."
