Brandon Knight

As I suggested was the best course of action Thursday morning, Brandon Knight did not make his start for New Orleans Thursday, and is now scheduled to start in Pedro?s place Saturday for the Mets. Knight was a dominant 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA for New Orleans with 49 strikeouts against 10 walks in 39.1 IP. The PCL had hit just .172 against the 32-year old righty.

This article in the New Orleans Times Picayune focuses on his development as a pitcher and his selection to the Olympic team. His hometown Ventura County Star does a more personal piece. It?s a story almost straight from Disney. He considered turning to coaching, but with his wife?s encouragement decided to give himself one more chance to make the big leagues. Now he?s there.

Wednesday night, Pedro Martinez?s father, Pablo Martinez who has suffered from brain cancer, passed away. Every Met fan would do well to take a moment not just to sympathize with Pedro, but to remember a loved one who has passed away or just appreciate the parents you have.

Moving from the contemplative to the practical, the Mets now also have a need for a starter for Saturday night. My best guess is that the Mets will place Martinez on the bereavement list in order to add a pitcher. A player may be placed on the bereavement list, with approval from the commissioner?s office, for between three and seven days.

I don?t think the Mets will dip into the bullpen for a spot starter. So the table below breaks down the New Orleans Zephyrs rotation. Days rest counts from the pitcher?s last start to Saturday.
