My arm just cannot withstand the workload to pitch at this level. The more I throw, the more the nerves continue to flare in my arm causing pain, numbness and fatigue. My own understanding from years of experience with this injury, I felt it was time to move on in my life and retire from baseball. The Mets paid Rustich $373,500 to sign as their second pick of the second round in the 2007 draft out of UCLA, but he was rarely healthy as a professional. He did not pitch in as many as 50 innings in any season as a professional, and missed all of 2011. Since he was drafted, Rustich was diagnosed with: a stress fracture, a small labrum tear in his shoulder, damaged to his ulner collateral ligament in his elbow, a second stress fracture, and thoracic outlet syndrome which resulted in a surgery to remove a piece of rib and muscle that was causing numbness in his arm.
Here are my favorite two questions from the exchange:
Q: Most people look at HR totals for skill progression, but your low K/high BB rates are arguably your most impressive stats. Are you more drawn to the long ball, or do you actively focus on drawing walks/limiting strikeouts?

Is it crazy, or funny, or sad that I thought this line (5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 K) might be progress for Brad Holt (2-4, 5.60) until I read the walk column?? That's now 30 strikeouts against 24 walks in 35.1 innings (6.2 BB/9) in Advanced-A.? Holt walked 13 in 43.1 (2.7 BB/9) at the same level last year.? Why is his walk rate over 2x what it was last year?? Figure that out, and the Mets would like to talk to you.
And lookee here, in his first FSL game of the year, Brant Rustich gave up two hits and struck out a batter in a scoreless inning.? The big guy is now 25, but has been effective when he's been on the hill.? His 2010 was delayed by a broken arm suffered at the end of '09. Rustich, like Lutz, is a nice AFL candidate to make up for lost playing time during the regular season.

What Happened: The Mets skipped the 21-year old Lucas, coming off a good year in Kingsport, and a so-so few weeks in the NYP, over Savannah (where Jefry Marte was holding down the hot corner) to St. Lucie, where's he's struggled.? He just hasn't made enough contact in the FSL.? However, his ten home runs are good enough for fifth in the League, so he?s hit for some power.? Now, can he make more contact in the second half?

ALL STATS IN TABLES ARE AS OF JULY 1, 2009.
Few players in the Mets system are as confusing to me as Brant Rustich.? Thursday, he gave up one run on three hits and a walk, struck out two, and left the game after recording two ground ball outs in the third inning.? In fact, he retired eight Yankees, six by grounders, and two by strikeouts.? Ordinarily, that's the start to a dominating evening, but for Rustich, it was his whole outing.? I just don't get it.? He's a big body, but when I've seen him, he was soft-ish.? He's had trouble, big trouble, staying healthy.? I was underwhelmed by his stuff when I saw him in Hawaii in '07, but the scouting reports have been strong since then, particularly last year.

Brant Rustich was placed on the Savannah disabled list with a stress fracture in his right arm. Obviously, this is disappointing both because Rustich was having some success and has a lengthy injury history. The injury?s severity depends on a more precise diagnosis (like which bone we?re talking about).
Junior Guerra was promoted to St. Lucie. Guerra, a hardthrowing RHP was untouchable in ten Gnats appearances. In 25.2 IP, he struck out 34 and walked just two in the SAL. He yielded 14 hits for an opponents? batting average of .156!
Philips Orta (4-4, 2.05) and Michael Olmsted (1-1, 1.83) were promoted from Kingsport to Savannah to fill the roster spots vacated by Rustich and Guerra. Olmsted will start Monday night. In 19.2 innings with the K-Mets he walked five and struck out 23.
