The NHL instituted a bunch of new rules this season, one of which was that all players with less than 26 NHL games under their belt must wear visors. Another rule to piggyback off of this was that fighters would be assessed a minor penalty if they removed their helmets themselves before a fight.Fighting with a visor on is considered 'weak' and all that, but it also runs the risk of cracking the shield, which could potentially slice a hand or face open and generally be bad for everyone involved.?So, last night in Newark when Brett Gallant and New Jersey's Krys Barch squared off for Round Two, they?did what the kids do in junior hockey where there are similar rules; they took off each other's visors.(Upon further review, it looks like Gallant is taking them both off, but it's the general idea. Also, Barch did undo his chinstrap before the two engaged.)Both players got five for fighting but nothing more. The referees didn't seem keen to call the additional minor penalty on either player for the helmet removal. Here's the exact rule if you're curious,?Rule 46.6:

Helmets?- No player may remove his helmet prior to engaging in a fight. If he should do so, he shall be assessed a two minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Helmets that come off in the course of and resulting from the altercation will not result in a penalty to either player.

All that said, I can only image it's a matter of time before the league closes the Gallant-Barch loophole with another new rule.

In Tuesday night's pre-season action there were of course some scraps. The tough guys have to get their, uh, practice punches in. The better fight of the night was in Regina, as Brian McGrattan squared off with the Isles' Brett Gallant with two minutes to go in the first period: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IT6us6oseEAnd in Calgary it was Chris (trophy droppin') Bruton against Chris McKelvie early in the second:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcxdrWOqej8

The Islanders have re-signed restricted free agent forward Brett Gallant to a one-year, two-way deal, the team has confirmed to Point Blank.

According to CapGeek.com, Gallant gets a pay raise in the AHL of $75,000 up from $65,000 last year. If he plays in the NHL, the deal is valued at $550,000 down from $610,000 although he has yet to play in an NHL game.

Last season with the Sound Tigers, Gallant played the tough guy role racking up 202 penalty minutes in 42 games. He did not record a point. According to HockeyFights.com, Gallant had 26 fights in the AHL last season.

The CT Post's Mike Fornabaio tweeted some Sound Tiger injury updates today. Fornabaio says that defender Calvin de Haan has resumed skating; "Skating; just got to shoot the puck again. Some time before contact, though."

De Haan has been out since October with a dislocated shoulder.

Another hurt Sound Tiger is tough guy Brett Gallant. Gallant will miss the rest of the year due to shoulder surgery. The Islanders had signed Gallant to a rest-of-the-season deal in February, which was speculated to be as either a replacement for Eric Boulton or as a reward for a job well done.

On Sunday afternoon, the Sound Tigers had a fight-filled game in Providence against the Bruins that included 10 fighting majors (even one from Ty Wishart) and 98 total penalty minutes between the two teams. The best fight in my opinion was Bridgeport's Brett Gallant against Lane McDermid in the second period.
