As the regular season draws to a close these next couple of weeks, the NBA postseason is almost upon us. For the Nets, the postseason will bring an opportunity to write the final chapter in this roller coaster 2013-14 season.

Earlier today on the site, Brian Erni ran down the pros and cons of Brooklyn matching up with the Toronto Raptors and the Chicago Bulls. One of those two teams will in all likelihood be the Nets' first-round opponent when the playoffs get underway.

One way or another, I think that whoever the Nets play, it's going to be a fun series that has potential to be one of the better matchups in the first round this season.

Tuesday?night, the Nets defeated the Houston Rockets to win their 14th straight home game, setting a new franchise record for consecutive home wins.

With the victory, Brooklyn officially clinched a playoff berth, and they moved to within 1.5 games of both the Raptors and Bulls with only nine games left to play.

When the Nets have played their best, they've shared the ball and taken advantage of open looks. They did that again yesterday, shooting 53.0% from the field as a team.

Wednesday?night, the Nets dropped a game to the Charlotte Bobcats, ending their recent three-game road trip with two consecutive losses.

Even with the losses, Brooklyn's 27-12 record since January 1 is still the best record in the Eastern Conference in that span. However, with only 12 games left in the regular season, time is running out for the Nets to get optimal playoff seeding.

The Nets are now 2.5 games out of the fourth seed in the East, and they face a very real possibility that they will not secure home court advantage in the postseason.

The Nets had their four-game winning streak snapped, as they lost to the New Orleans Pelicans in overtime.

Coming off a hard-fought overtime win?just a day earlier, Brooklyn built a big lead in New Orleans, only to seemingly take the foot of the gas and let the Pelicans back in it.

A 22-point lead evaporated, and a potential blowout victory ended up as an overtime loss, almost the exact opposite of the way the Nets had battled back the night before.

Tuesday night, the Nets rolled over the Phoenix Suns at the Barclays Center, extending their home winning streak to a season-high nine games, their longest home win streak since the 2005-06 season.

Deron Williams came alive for Brooklyn, scoring 28 points on a career-high 84.6% shooting (11-of-13) with four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Williams has grabbed at least one steal in 15 straight games, the longest current streak in the NBA. But after the game, all the locker room could talk about was a certain fourth-quarter play, when Deron did something he hadn't done all season.

Last night in Washington, the Nets dropped a tough one against the Wizards, losing a game they led by 10 points in the fourth quarter, only to watch the lead--and the game--slip away.

The Nets went 0-of-8 from the floor over the last 6:22 of the game, while Washington shot 5-of-10 over that span as they went on a 14-3 run to secure the victory.

The Wizards swept the three-game season series, and the Nets dropped to 31-2 when leading after three quarters this season. Both losses came against the Wizards.

Last night, the Nets' four-game winning streak came to an end when they dropped a tough one on the road to the division rival Boston Celtics.

For Brooklyn, it was one of their worst shooting nights as a team, as they couldn't get anything going from behind the three-point line, or anywhere else for that matter.

The Nets shot just 4-of-30 from three-point territory on Friday, including 0-of-17 in the first half. Joe Johnson, Deron Williams, and Paul Pierce combined to shoot 3-of-19 from deep, and they played about as well as anyone on the floor for Brooklyn.

On the strength of a 30-point quarter to start the game, and a 33-point quarter coming out of halftime, Brooklyn was able to get the best of a good defensive Memphis team.

In 16 minutes off the bench, Andray Blatche shot a team-best 66.7 percent from the field, with four rebounds, three blocks, and two assists, including this memorable play.

It was a total team effort, as only one Nets player scored more than 10 points, while 10 different players scored at least eight points, and all 13 active players scored.

The Nets' five-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday, but their strong start to the new year was great to see. We all know that the Nets had a really rough start to their 2013-14 season, but ever since the calendar turned to January, they've seemingly been a completely different team.

One of my favorite stats is Defensive Rating, which measures the amount of points allowed per 100 possessions. I like Defensive Rating a lot more for analyzing a team's defense than an individual player's, and I don't think any other stat tells the story of the Nets' turnaround during that five-game stretch more than Defensive Rating does.

Over Brooklyn's first 31 games of the year, spanning from the start of the season until New Year's Eve in San Antonio, the Nets were 10-21 and had a 106.7 Defensive Rating as a team. Only two teams gave up more points per 100 possessions in that span, and the league-worst Defensive Rating was 107.7, just one full point higher.

Brooklyn impressively held the Heat to under 100 points, despite a 32-point Miami first quarter, thanks to some stifling defense that held the Heat to 13 points in the second quarter, and just six points combined over the 10 minutes of the two overtime periods.

One constant for the Nets over the course of this current five-game losing streak has been the absence of Brook Lopez, who injured his ankle in the Nets' last victory 10 days ago and has not been able to suit up since.

Lopez leads the team with 20.5 points per game, 2.8 blocks per game and a 63.5% True Shooting Percentage. Lopez has scored 22.3 points per game in the Nets' victories, shooting 63.9% from the field with a 71.3% True Shooting Percentage in those games.

The big man is clearly the team's best offensive player, and I don't think anybody would argue that. However, one thing that's been really surprising is that Lopez has arguably emerged as Brooklyn's best defensive?player as well, or at the very least, their most important defensive player.
