Monday's game was far from thrilling, but once again it gave us another look into what the team will be like once these games finally count. So here are a few things we learned:

All eyes were on Brooklyn's game because a majority of the Isles starters were taking part in that game and it was their first real run-through in their new home. Here are few things we learned from Monday's game at Barclays Center...

There will certainly be an adjustment period for the players to get used to their new digs. On the ice, the Islanders tried to get a feel for how the boards were and how the ice was. Despite there being a Madonna concert at the arena just two days ago, head coach Jack Capuano said the ice was good.
The LIRR will add two additional eastbound trains to Farmingdale and Babylon that will depart Atlantic Terminal 20 minutes after the end of weekday home games. Fans looking for other?lines will transfer at Jamaica. In addition, two west bound trains will be added to the schedule on the weekend along with two extra eastbound trains after games.

"There's still that competition there," Pulock said after the first day of minicamp. "It doesn't give me a free spot. I'm still fighting every inch for a spot, so things really haven't changed that way. But I guess it's one less prospect fighting for that one spot."

Draft Ops, a daily fantasy sports operator, has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the Barclays Center. The agreement includes sponsorship of the Islanders, which includes "on-and-off ice assets" (Forbes, June 24).
The fantasy sports website will also build an on-site?Fantasy Sports Book at Barclays Center. The Fantasy Sports Book?will begin being built in September and Draft Ops will launch it in connection with the Islanders season opener in October.
In a Newsday feature highlighting the aspects that Barclays Center want to carry over from the team's days at Nassau Coliseum, CEO Brett Yormark discussed the desire to move to a larger radio station. The Islanders have been on WRHU since 2010. (June 2)
"I think it's fair to say that's probably not a place we'll end up," Yormark said bluntly.
Thursday was a surreal feeling for the players as they went separate ways for the summer. The sting of their first round exit in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs still fresh and the realization that the Coliseum will no longer be their home starting to sink in.
"I couldn't help but think about it driving up here today," Josh Bailey said as he spoke with reporters one final time. "And walking down the hallway. It's sad, for sure."

Forest City Ratner also alleges that the dispute has led to "delays and gridlock" in filing plans with the Town of Hempstead. Forest City officials do not believe the suit will hold up the time frame of the project, which is expected to begin in August.
However, a?Long Island Business News report?suggested that the suit could hold up the project for months.?

He enjoyed it so much so that he was "very close" to staying with the team long term. Vanek created a lot of chemistry with Kyle Okposo and John Tavares during his time with the Isles and had nothing but good memories of the team.
"I only have good things to say," Vanek told reporters Tuesday morning. "Only thing I wish that is the team would stay here on the Island and not move. Besides that it was a great time."
The team said the leak was related to the construction of a new 'green' roof.
"I didn't even know it was raining outside," said Joe Johnson, who scored 16 points for the Nets. "I was like `How the hell we got a leak if it ain't raining.'"

It will be a reunion of sorts since the Islanders and Nets used to both play at Nassau Coliseum before the basketball team was moved to New Jersey in 1977. Now they will be, as the Barclays Center is dubbing it, "two teams reunited in Brooklyn."
On Wednesday night several players exchanged jerseys prior to tip-off between the Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

"I think the Islanders' prospects are strong," he said during an interview with Mike Francesa. "They?re putting together a good, young team and they?re moving to a state-of-the-art arena. Even thought it wasn?t specifically designed for hockey it will certainly improve things for them and their fans."
The franchise is coming of its most successful offseason in quite some time. General Manager Garth Snow improved the Islanders at every position that had holes. He brought in goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson to shore up goaltending. Snow added Nikolay Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski to add more scoring, and traded for top-4 defenseman Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk.

Luckily, WRHU Islanders reporter Dan Savarino, who is at Prudential Center, was able to capture a gif of the save. At the time of the save the Islanders were trailing New Jersey 1-0.
Barclays Center was not built for hockey. It would be hard to argue against that by any means.
However, to say that it is terrible for hockey would not be accurate either. The thing with Barclays Center is that it has its' flaws, but it also has a lot of positives. The most obvious being that the building isn't 43 years old. Nothing against Nassau Coliseum -- it's a building that is great for hockey, but lacks modern amenities and is literally falling apart.

Nearly 12,000 people showed up to Barclays Center for preseason hockey. The Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in the shootout and fans finally had the chance to hear the goal horn at Barclays Center.
?Well it?s nice to score a goal,? Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano told reporters after the game. ?Last year we never heard the horn go off. Didn?t even know what it was going to be like.?
Need to Know: Islanders goalie Chad Johnson had 29 saves.
The game is the second NHL contest held at the Brooklyn venue, which will be the Islanders new home after this season. Chris King and Butch Goring will be the broadcast team for the night. King will return to the television booth for the first time since a short stint last season filling in for Howie Rose.
It will be the first time fans will see how a hockey game will look on TV from the Barclays Center. The arena?received mixed reviews from fans after the initial preseason contest there last season, in which the Islanders lost 3-0 to New Jersey. Some fans were unhappy with the view from different sections of the arena while others did not like that the?scoreboard was off-center.

The Nets hadn't swept a back-to-back and were just 1-6 in the second game of back-to-backs this season, but they had no trouble defending their home court on Tuesday.
Brooklyn has now won six straight home games, running their overall home record up to 11-9 on the season, even after a six-game home losing streak earlier this season.

That's because the Nets kick off a pivotal stretch tonight at the Barclays Center. Two of their next three meetings with be with the Sixers, with a home game against the Wizards sandwiched in between. Two tough match ups with the Pacers loom (on the 23 and 28 of December), but outside of them, and arguably a Bulls team on Christmas that's without Derrick Rose, the Nets have finally hit an elongated soft spot in their schedule.
Home against Philly, home against Washington, at Philly, with games against Milwaukee and Sacramento scattered around the Pacers and Bulls meetings. That's a stretch where the Nets can do some damage. Philadelphia has lost six in a row, and the Nets have to make sure that that streak hits seven. Brooklyn is just two games off the division pace, and a hot stretch against beatable opponents could place them in the driver's seat in the division as we turn the calendar to 2014. That's??a huge opportunity.

By Jeff O'ConnorIt appears there are only a few days remaining until there is a consistent goal song for the 2013-14 New Jersey Devils season.? After playing a completely new song on Opening Night and surprising over 17,000 people, the Devils gave their fans the opportunity to cast their vote for a new song.
The top three choices made a trial run at each of the last three home games.? Now the vote is on over the next few days for their new tune to make its debut on Saturday night versus the Flyers.

The seven-foot center from Duke University averaged 17.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game last season with the Blue Devils. He earned Second Team All-American and First Team All-ACC honors this past season.
The Nets were one pick late in getting a guy they seemed to covet ? Louisville?s Gorgui Dieng ? but Plumlee also seems to be a good fit for what the Nets need.

Earlier today, the Barclays Center tweeted out a photo montage (right) of the arena's hockey setup taking shape. It might be the best photo we've seen so far, taken from a side view of the ice surface.
As mentioned on this blog last week, the scoreboard is off-center and looks like it is over one of the bluelines. The photo also sheds a little light on what will happen in the end zone where things get a little tight. It looks as though -- unless things change -- there will be no seats behind the glass on the lower level on that end (the empty section in the second tier is supposed to be like that, even for basketball games). It also seems like the upper bowl on that side will have an awfully hard time seeing the near net, but I guess we won't know for sure until September.

It?s not going to look like a traditional hockey arena.
The picture to your right?came to light in September 2012 showing the rink setup. In it you can sort of see how the scoreboard will be hanging over one end of the ice and not centered as it normally would be.

However, Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark is still trying to figure out how to incorporate black and white into the Islanders color scheme, which he calls 'the colors of Brooklyn.'?The Nets wear black and white jerseys that say Brooklyn on the front, and those have been quite a success for the team. Guard Deron Williams had the sixth best selling jersey in the entire NBA this season.
In a long 15-minute interview with Russia Today, Yormark touched on a lot of topics including how he hopes to add black and white into the Islanders color scheme. He did not give specifics as to whether it would be the jerseys, the logo or maybe only a third jersey. Transcribed by NetsDaily:

The Barclays has a massive bike rack that can hold up to 400 bikes. According to NetsDaily, Barclays paid Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group to be 'bike valets' on Wednesday night:
[sny-box]Transportation Alternatives, under the rubric "One Less Car," provided valet service, locking the bikes and holding on to the helmets, then at concert's end, returning both to the riders. Like a coat check for bikes. About 100 riders took advantage of the free service Wednesday.

According to sources with Nassau and the Islanders, both sides are open to a financial arrangement that could benefit the bankrupt county and the money-losing team. The Islanders' lease does not expire for another two full seasons, in the summer of 2015.
Leaving Nassau Coliseum a year earlier would enable the Islanders to begin capitalizing on revenue streams in Brooklyn, while not playing as lame duck tenants at the old barn on Hempstead Turnpike any longer than possible.
Brooklyn is coming off a big win on the road against the Charlotte Bobcats, but the team has lost three consecutive games on its home floor.
The Wizards have played better since the return of point guard John Wall, but the team is still the worst in the NBA on the road at 5-23.

Sometimes, in the debates that pop up on twitter, message boards, and even this blog's comments, things degenerate a bit -- as things on the internet are wont to do -- and focus on some deep seeded issues like the crime rates in Brooklyn and how dangerous a place the Barclays Center is. That comes partially out of truth; some of the crime rates in Brooklyn are higher than the national average. It also comes out of some inaccurate and paranoid places induced by fear and racism.
The arena itself resides in Prospect Heights, part of the City's 78th Precinct. According to the precinct's commanding officer Michael Ameri, crime at the new arena is virtually non-existent.

Long Island is a populace that?s used to sitting in traffic on a daily basis and used to spending long periods of time on the train to get to New York City. The early returns show that we?ll also be willing to take the extra time to get to the brand new Barclays Center. The arena, which opened in September, has provided the LIRR with an average increase of 3,300 riders per event on their Atlantic Terminal line. That?s nearly a fifth of the arena?s basketball capacity of 17,732 coming from Long Island, on average.
[sny-box]Helping offset the 2.4 million customers lost to Sandy were big gains on the LIRR's Brooklyn line since the September opening of the Barclays Center, across the street from the railroad's Atlantic Terminal.

Ilya Kovalchuk has arrived at the Prudential Center
? Rich Chere (@Ledger_NJDevils) January 16, 2013Earlier Wednesday, Lou Lamoriello told Tom Gulitti of The Record that Kovy would be at the 2 p.m. practice/scrimmage with AHL Albany. It wasn't clear if he'd participate in the scrimmage.

- Lou says the Devils expect to bring 25 to 28 players to camp with them, consisting of two goalies, eight defensemen and five to six forward lines. The goalies and defenseman are pretty self-explanatory, but it'll be interesting to see which Albany players get the call.
- Lou didn't reveal whether any of the team's junior prospects would get a call for camp. As a note, in the shortened season the NHL has shortened the amount of NHL games a junior player can play in from 10 to six. That means after six games the NHL club must either keep said player or return him to his junior club.
- The team will put the players through physicals Sunday and then the team will hold their first official team practice on the same day.
- The players have been using the team's facilities during this informal "warmup" period before camps open with the permission of the league and the Devils.
- Camp will be held at the Prudential Center, as it usually is.

To say that this was a long time coming is an understatement. My favorite quote to cite -- and you may have seen this before -- is from 1991 when, just before the dawn of the modern American stadium and arena boom, Bill Torrey was citing his team's facility as a competitive disadvantage:

Poor play for Williams is still above average and All-star quality for most and anyone who watches him play knows he runs the Brooklyn Nets and even with his poor shooting he is leading in many ways that help the team win.
One thing you love about superstars is that they are never satisfied with how they are playing and Williams is one of those superstars.
