Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard allowed four runs, nine hits and three walks in a no-decision Monday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, settling down after running into trouble in the third inning.
The 12 batters that reached base safely against Syndergaard were the most he allowed in a game this season, as the 25-year-old hasn't been the dominant pitcher he's shown he's capable of being.
In the month of August, Syndergaard is 3-2 with a 4.74 ERA, allowing 20 runs, 41 hits and 10 walks in 38 innings.

Keith Hernandez refers to good fundamentals as "good fundies." On Sunday, the Mets' fundies were not good as two lapses in the field led to two Cubs runs in the Mets' 2-0 loss at Citi Field.
Mets LHP Steven Matz's lack of attention to Javy Baez on third base led to his steal of home, while a lack of communication between right fielder Jay Bruce and second baseman Luis Guillorme led to a sacrifice fly as New York was swept at home.
"You're giving them the game instead of them winning the game from you," Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters after the game. "That's always hard to accept."

Despite his start being overshadowed by a steal of home plate, Mets LHP Steven Matz struck out seven batters in seven strong innings in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Cubs, his first start since suffering a strained middle finger.
"He's been tremendous,'' manager Mickey Callaway told reporters. "He's attacking the hitters. Great changeup. Better breaking ball probably than I've ever seen.''
Matz (2-4) allowed two runs -- both in the seventh inning -- and five hits in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 3.42. Over his last three outings, including last Tuesday's start in which he left after three innings with a finger strain, Matz has a 1.13 ERA in his last three outings.

The Yankees are among four teams that Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton would approve a trade to, according to Sirius XM's Craig Mish.
The other three teams include the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros, according to Mish, who also notes Stanton's "desire to win has been greatly understated."
Stanton, the subject of trade rumors over the past few weeks as the Marlins reportedly look to cut $65 million from their payroll next season, has a no-trade clause in his 13-year, $325 million contract, and has not approved a trade to the San Francisco Giants or St. Louis Cardinals, two teams who have heavily pursued acquiring the 28-year-old MVP.
The Marlins have already reportedly agreed on the "general framework" in a deal with the Cardinals and Giants, and Stanton had met with both clubs, according to Mish, however it is unclear where they stand.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit two home runs and Jay Bruce went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run during Monday's 6-1 win against the Cubs at Citi Field.
Both of Cabrera's home runs came against Cubs pitcher John Lackey, the first of which gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the second inning, while his second extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth.
Earlier in the game, Cabrera was charged with a fielding error after he bumped into 3B Jose Reyes when trying to make a play on a popup. The ball deflected off his glove, allowing Cubs OF Jason Heyward to reach base.

The Mets and Cubs were rivals back when both teams were in the NL East. Then in 1994, the Central division was added, the Cubs left, the two teams played fewer times each season and the passion between them fizzled... until last year.
In built behind the scenes during the previous few seasons, as both teams rebuilt their franchises in diametrically opposed, though bot circling the same goal of winning the World Series.
The Mets chose to create their foundation out of forceful pitching, while the Cubs leaned on power-hitting position players. In fact, there were several occasions during their rebuilds when fans and media insisted the two sides should meet in the middle, swap fastballs for home runs, a shortstop for a pitcher, and balance out their rosters, but no such deal was ever made.

The Yankees have traded LH reliever Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs in exchange for SS Gleyber Torres, OF/DH Billy McKinney, RHP Adam Warren, and OF Rashad Crawford, the team announced.
The Yankees discussed a potential contract extension with Chapman before trading him, but were rebuffed, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Torres, a 19-year-old shortstop, is ranked the 15th-best prospect in baseball, according to ESPN's Keith Law. He was scratched from High-A Myrtle Beach's lineup on Sunday and would be considered the central figure the Yankees would receive in a potential deal for Chapman.

New York Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard struck out eight batters and allowed one run and seven hits over seven innings in a 14-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday at Citi Field.
It was revealed after his previous start that Syndergaard has a small bone spur in throwing elbow. However, he and the Mets repeatedly said his recent struggles were attributed to over throwing and not any pain associated with his arm.
"I felt really calm out there," said Syndergaard, who improved to 9-3 with a 2.41 ERA. "I wasn't trying to do too much. In that start against the Nationals, I was feeling really strong and really good, and I was just trying to throw the ball harder as opposed to going out there and pitching."
Washington Nationals RHP Lucas Giolito, MLB's top pitching prospect, threw four scoreless innings and gave up one hit in four innings before leaving the game after a 1 hour, 23 minute rain delay in the New York Mets' 5-0 loss to the Nationals.
"He pounded the strike zone very well," Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper said of his teammate. "His fastball was good, his curveball was good. I think he kept them off-balance pretty well."
The Mets mustered just five hits all game and went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
The Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes continue to heat up, according to multiple reports.
Buster Olney of ESPN recently reported that the Miami Marlins (41-35) have held internal discussions on Chapman as a trade target.
The Marlins bullpen has the second most saves in the MLB and rank in the Top 11 in batting average against, strikeouts and ERA. Their current closer, A.J. Ramos, has a career-best 1.74 ERA and has 38 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched.
