Tom Pecora was fired on?Wednesday?after spending five years at Fordham, the?school announced.

Potential replacements for Pecora will likely include Albany coach Will Brown, a Long Island native who has taken the Great Danes to five NCAA Tournaments; Iona coach Tim Cluess,?a Queens, N.Y., native who has guided the Gaels to two NCAAs and two NITs; Manhattan coach Steve Masiello, who has taken the Jaspers to two straight NCAAs and lost Tuesday night's play-in game to Hampton; and Stony Brook coach Steve Pikiell, who has taken that program to three NITs and two CBIs in the last six years. Columbia's Kyle Smith could also be a possibility.

"The decision was based on the fact that the University's men's basketball program has regrettably not achieved the desired results or made the sustained progress hoped for under Mr. Pecora's leadership, as measured by the won/loss record over five years, which was 44 ? 106 (29.3 percent), and the recruited student athlete retention rate over the past four years, which was 50 percent," the school announced.

Jason Kidd is keeping it simple, and his players are very happy.

Stefan Bondy reports that Kidd has simplified both the offensive and defensive schemes, and his players are happy and thriving. Deron Williams told Bondy that Kidd gets his points across quickly, while also mentioning it might have been best for Kidd to divorce himself of Lawrence Frank:

[sny-box]?I mean, Lawrence was always kind of the defensive guy, so he was talking on defense and he was definitely long-winded when it came to teaching, so I definitely think it?s helped [that Frank is no longer around] We?re a veteran group, so we get things pretty easily. So at times when you?re just talking and you?re not practicing, it gets a little lengthy. But I think J-Kidd does a good job of getting his points across quick and easy and then we move on.?[/sny-box]

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers should make Mark Messier the head coach of the Wolf Pack and allow him to gain experience running and managing his own bench so that he could one day be a more formidable candidate to become a head coach at the NHL level.

Brooks says that the team could make Ken Gernander an associate coach but he doesn't specify whether that would be with the Rangers or the Wolf Pack.

By coaching in the AHL Messier would allow himself to expand the pool of potential teams that would hire him as the two teams who have had interest in him coaching are the teams that he has deep rooted history with and long term connections.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that if the Rangers were to hire Mark Messier to be their head coach there would be an immediate level of respect from the players.

Brooks writes that the challenge will be keeping that respect while doing the job.

Adam Rotter: The players just need to have their eyes open as they walk around MSG or the Training Center to see what kind of impact Mark Messier has had with this team and in this city. He has won in NY and that appeals to this group which thinks it's in a position to do the same. That being said, that respect could go out the window quickly in training camp if Messier doesn't have an understanding of what to do. I still think Messier's best role is as a consultant. Someone who does a few different things with the players but has a presence with the team and is in 100% agreement with the coaching staff.

Tim, Jeff, Craig: If Ruff and Vigneault were fired, how come the Rangers need permission to talk to them?

Adam Rotter: While we refer to these people as having been fired, it's not technically true. Vigneault, Ruff and John Tortorella were all relieved of their coaching duties which means they are still employees of the organization, but no longer in the position of head coach. The Islanders relieved Scott Gordon of his coaching responsibilities in 2011 and then put him to work as a scout as he finished up his contract. Before he left the Maple Leafs to take a scouting job with Anaheim, Brian Burke was relieved of his duties as GM but stayed on in a Senior Advisory role. Anaheim asked permission to speak with Burke and then hired him to be a scout. Because they are still team employees, the Rangers could get hit with tampering charges for talking to Ruff or Vigneault without permission. The same will happen when John Tortorella becomes a candidate to coach somewhere else.
