RHP Nelson Figueroa tossed seven shutout innings of two hit ball (needing just 75 pitches) and looked dominant. He faced the minimum, aided by four double plays.

A scoreless game heading into the eighth?with the pen taking over, the first pitch by RHP Connor Robertson was hit out of the park by Pawtucket's C Carlos Maldonado and that's all the Sox needed in a 1-0 victory.

After managing just two hits last night in a 9-0 loss, Buffalo managed just four this afternoon and are now 0-3. DH Fernando Martinez was 1-for-4 with a sixth inning double. The series concludes tomorrow with LHP Casey Fossum set to start against Pawtucket's RHP Clay Buchholz.

Friday, the Mets optioned LHP Jonathan Niese, RHP Connor Robertson and C Robinson Cancel to the Buffalo Bisons.

By optioning Niese at this point, the Mets have effectively removed him as a candidate for the fifth starter's spot, leaving Freddy Garcia to battle Livan Hernandez for the job. I think Niese will have a chance to pitch himself into a big league job with the Mets at some point in 2009 when injuries or ineffectiveness strike the original starting five.

The Mets acquired Robertson from the D-Backs in the Schoeneweis trade.? He still has options left.? Robertson, who has spent the majority of his last two years at AAA, will likely set up Eddie Kunz to begin the year in the Buffalo bullpen.

Two of the candidates for the fifth starters spot threw against UM Sunday and both were lousy in their own way: Freddy Garcia threw in the mid-80s (per Marty Noble), and Tim Redding gave up five runs in .1 of an IP.

On the prospect side, Eddie Kunz gave up one run on a solo homer, on two hits in two innings.? He didn't strike out a batter, nor did he walk one.

Connor Robertson, acquired for Scott Schoenweiss, dealt a perfect two innings with three strikeouts.? He has not yet allowed a hit in four spring innings.
