Giants co-owner John Mara got straight to the point Tuesday after practice when asked about the quarterback situation between veteran Eli Manning and rookie Daniel Jones, saying he hopes "Eli has a great year and Daniel never sees the field."

His sentiments trickled into Wednesday's post-practice availability, where Jones faced the inevitable question.

What did he think about Mara's comments?

Following the first week of the exhibition season in the NFL, the optimism surrounding both of New York's football teams is through the roof.

The Jets' Sam Darnold led a single drive that was near perfect, as the second-year pro was 4-for-5 passing with a touchdown. The Giants' once looked down upon rookie QB in Daniel Jones was one pass better, as he was 5-for-5 passing with a touchdown.

So... Giants vs. Jets Super Bowl?

Eli Manning still has the support of Phil Simms

Regardless of what Giants brass and head coach Pat Shurmur says about there not being a quarterback competition between Manning and rookie Daniel Jones this summer, it'll still be a topic of discussion leading up to the regular season.

Observers of the G-men are picking their sides between the two QBs and among those doing so is one of the team's former quarterbacks in Simms.

Everyone's talking about the New York Giants' quarterback controversy. Featuring a trusty veteran and an upstart draft pick, preseason reps may be the best way to figure out who makes the team, and who is let go.

Oh, you thought we were talking about Eli Manning and Daniel Jones? Nope.

The real quarterback competition on the Giants is the one that nobody is talking about -- Alex Tanney vs. Kyle Lauletta. The two quarterbacks are dueling for one spot on the roster as the third-string QB, but that doesn't mean the battle doesn't have high stakes.

Losing either quarterback would involve reneging on a team investment. Of course, most fans know that Lauletta was a fourth-round draft pick just last year, and at one point, the heir apparent to Manning. He even saw a small sample of game action last year, a rarity for a rookie QB on the Giants.

Giants safety Jabrill Peppers is the latest teammate that rookie quarterback Daniel Jones has impressed this summer.

According to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, the selection of Jones by the Giants was praised much more league-wide. Peppers remembers the boos and questioning that took place the moment Jones became his teammate on draft night.

But Peppers now defers to the eye test.

Daniel Jones on early camp 00:02:03
Pat Shurmur, Daniel Jones, and Evan Engram reveal the work and progress so far with Jones, as the rookie signal caller starts training camp.

Giants QB Daniel Jones spoke Thursday and weighed in on several topics as he gets his first NFL training camp underway. Here are the takeaways...

Offseason workouts

"I was back at Duke for a lot of it, kind of back and forth from Duke and Charlotte for a lot of it. Felt like Duke was the best place for me to have guys to throw to, have somewhere to lift, coaches around, got to spend sometime with coach Cut (David Cutcliffe) and all those guys. Just being there, being around those guys, being able to throw to guys, a couple older guys were back too, just being around there I was able to do everything I needed to do."

Rookie QB Daniel Jones has signed a four-year, $25.6 million contract with the Giants, as confirmed by SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. The deal is fully-guaranteed, along with a $16.7 million signing bonus.

Jones, who was drafted with the sixth overall pick in the first round, was the last remaining Giants draft pick who was unsigned, and he is expected to join the team rookies report early for training camp on Tuesday.

The Giants are hoping Jones will be the quarterback who will eventually replace Eli Manning, who is set to begin his 16th season under center for Big Blue.

Apparently Phil Simms agrees with Dave Gettleman.

The Giants receieved plenty of critcism when they seleted QB Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick, but Simms said he's positive that Jones would've been selected before Big Blue's next pick.

"Just to dispel any myths -- you're probably the first person I'll says this to. Daniel Jones, 'Oh, they should have taken him later.' He was not going to be there," Simms said during an interview with Stat Sports. "Everybody just trust me.... I know for a fact he would not have been there on the 17th pick that the Giants had.

The Giants ended up making three picks on the first night of the 2019 NFL draft, but despite that, oddsmakers aren't viewing any of them as potential game changers in their rookie seasons.

According to BetOnline.ag, quarterback Daniel Jones, the sixth-overall pick, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, the No. 17 selection, and cornerback Deandre Baker, the 30th pick, all received modest odds for their respective Rookie of the Year Awards.

There's a twist in regard to Lawrence and Baker, though. The later-drafted Baker has better odds at the hardware. Baker clocks in with 28/1 odds while Lawrence is at 33/1, which are the same odds that quarterback Jones landed for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

The Madden NFL franchise released all of their indiviual and team ratings on Monday, and though it was already known, Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones finished very low on the list.

Jones had an abysmal grade of 63, which is the lowest grade among rookie quarterbacks. Even undrafted free agent QB Tyree Jackson has a 64 rating for the Bills to start the year.

So does that make Jones the worst rookie quarterback in Madden history?
