Dave Jennings

A sad morning in the NY Metro Area today as news of the deaths of two of the area's most-like figures are sinking in. Former Giants' All-Pro punter and radio analyst Dave Jennings died after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 61. Sopranos' star and Park Ridge native James Gandolfini died suddenly while vacationing in Italy. He was 51.

Below are some reactions to the passing of Jennings, who punted for the Giants and Jets during his 14-year playing career. After retiring in 1987, Jennings worked as a radio analyst on both Jets and Giants broadcasts for the next 20 seasons.

Dave Jennings, longtime Giants punter and broadcast, passed away on Wednesday at 61.

Back in the dark days of the 1970s, Giant fans had little to cheer for. When your punter is arguably your best player, that's a telling sign you're a team in trouble.

But that was the truth. Dave Jennings, who passed away today after a long illness, was the Giants' savior and safety blanket during a period where hope was absent and wins were hard to find. He was one of the game's greatest punters (his stats don't tell the tale, so stop right there), providing relief to a team that needed all the help it could get.
