The Devils recalled left wing Harri Pesonen from AHL Albany to take Ponikarovsky's place on the roster.
Ponikarovksy's IR placement was just a band-aid move to make room for Pesonen with Ilya Kovalchuk sidelined for likely the next two weeks. Pesonen will dress in place of Kovalchuk in Ottawa on Tuesday. My guess is that Poni returns to the lineup at some point during the Devils' two-game Florida trip next weekend. So why not just place Kovy on IR? Well, Lou said he was still undergoing an MRI and there's a possibility it could be less than two weeks. Although I'd be that Kovy eventually land son IR, the Devils likely want to wait it out until they get the test results and a more definitive timeline. Then, since Kovy is definitely out at least a week, they'll put him on the IR once Ponikarovsky is ready to return. Make sense? Good. Basically -- it's all a bunch of procedural roster scamming in order to field some semblance of a healthy 23-man roster for Tuesday's game in Ottawa.
