Gio Gonzalez appears increasingly likely to opt out of his minor league deal with the Yankees on Saturday, according to multiple major league sources. If he does, the Mets could be more of a fit than they were in the offseason.

On Friday, Gonzalez switched agents from Scott Boras to CAA. The move was intended to set him up with representation that he felt more comfortable with, in the event that he would become a free agent again.

If Gonzalez requests his release from the Yankees on Saturday, per a clause in his contract, the team will have 48 hours to add him to the major league roster. With Domingo German pitching capably and CC Sabathia back from the injured list, there is no obvious spot for Gonzalez -- though the Yankees could promote him and either piggyback him with German or put in him their rotation, in order to retain control.

The Yankees (8-9) welcome the Royals (6-12) to the Bronx for a four-game series beginning Thursday night at 6:35 p.m.

Yankees Notes

Brett Gardner is staying in the leadoff spot after his clutch grand slam helped the Yanks beat the Red Sox on Wednesday. ... Mike Ford is set to make his MLB debut, batting seventh as the designated hitter. Ford was called up on Tuesday when Greg Bird went on the injured list with a plantar fascia tear. Ford was raking in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 16-for-39 with five homers, four doubles and 14 RBI. ... DJ LeMahieu slides back to third base with Tyler Wade playing second and Gio Urshela on the bench.

Gio Gonzalez has a decision to make this week.

There is an April 20 opt-out in the minor deal deal Gonzalez signed with the Yankees last month, giving him the chance to return to free agency if he hasn't been called up to the majors by Saturday.

"Right now, I'm not even thinking 30 teams," Gonzalez recently told the New York Post. "If it's not good enough for this team that I'm with right now, that's all that matters. I want to perform for the team that has me in their minors right now. Hopefully something happens."

CC leads Yanks past ChiSox 00:01:31
CC Sabathia pitched 5 strong innings in his season debut and Aaron Judge added a solo home run as the Yankees blanked the White Sox, 4-0

The Yankees beat the White Sox, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx >> Box score

Six takeaways from Saturday's game…

1) CC Sabathia, coming off the injured list to make his first start of the season, was spectacular. In five innings, Sabathia allowed just one base runner (on a single) and struck out three. Sabathia, who will be retiring at season's end, is now 11 strikeouts away from 3,000 for his career, which should aid his bid to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Before we concern ourselves with Sabathia's career worth, right now the Yanks can use some of the stopper stuff he's possessed the last couple of seasons. He provided it Saturday.

If any Yankee fans were looking for Aaron Boone to call out his team or turn over a food table after the Houston Astros completed their sweep on Wednesday, they were once again disappointed by the even-tempered manager.

And as unsatisfying as it might be for a bloodthirsty public, Boone was exactly right, both in style and substance, when he said the following:

Yankees RHP Domingo German threw six strong innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Sunday's 15-3 victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards.

"The key today was to mix my pitches and be unpredictable out there, try to use my changeup in a way that they weren't expecting it," German said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "That's something I worked on in between starts. It worked out very well for me today."

Five things to know about Sunday's game..

1) Domingo German was in control from the outset of this game (after allowing five walks in his first outing), in which he didn't allow a base hit until a one-out single in the sixth inning. German's final line - 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 3 K - is one which will make it easy for the Yankees to keep him in the rotation while Luis Severino remains on the injured list.

Five things to know about Monday's game

1) Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German was erratic (five walks), but equally elusive (seven strikeouts) in his five innings of work. German allowed just one hit and an unearned run. The Yankees have sorted out their starting rotation for the beginning of the season.

Domingo German has earned a spot in the rotation while Luis Cessa made the club has a long reliever. Jonathan Loaisiga was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday because CC Sabathia will begin the season on the 25-man roster so he can serve his five-game suspension from last season, but Loaisiga likely will be called up for Game 6 when Sabathia goes on the injured list, Aaron Boone told reporters.

Boone didn't rule out using an opener on April 1 when the fifth spot in the rotation comes up. After that, Loaisiga probably will take Sabathia's spot in the rotation until he can return while German takes the spot of Luis Severino, who might not return until May as he works his way back from rotator cuff inflammation.

It appears Gio Gonzalez won't enter the Yankees rotation unless there is an emergency.

And though Luis Severino is set to miss roughly the first month of the season after dealing with rotator cuff inflammation and CC Sabathia needs more time to get ready, the Yankees don't believe they're in crisis mode because they have Luis CessaJonathan Loaisiga and Domingo German. GM Brian Cashman would prefer to use any of those pitchers instead of Gonzalez, who was signed to a minor-league deal this week.

"Optimally, I'd like to have the kids that we have, rely on those guys, to be honest," Cashman told reporters on Thursday. "We really do believe in the ceilings of the Cessas and Loaisigas and the Germans and we think those guys have earned the right for an opportunity and they're going to get those opportunities."

While the Yankees will be without injured ace Luis Severino for a while longer, he took a big step on Wednesday toward a return, throwing on flat ground

Severino had been shut down since March 5, and GM Brian Cashman announced last Friday that the best-case scenario for Severino would be a May return -- confirming the timeline an orthopedic surgeon gave SNY earlier this month.

The 25-year-old Severino does not have any structural damage in his shoulder, but he is basically re-starting his Spring Training as the team prepares for Opening Day in just over a week.

As the Yankees ponder whether to fill the early-season holes left by Luis Severino and CC Sabathia with in-house options or to add a veteran starter, they're linked with one free agent in particular.

Jon Heyman reported Friday that the Yankees "maintain some interest" in lefty Gio Gonzalez, though there are no signs that a deal is imminent.

Severino will miss the first month of the season with rotator cuff inflammation while the start of Sabathia's season will be slightly delayed because of a five-game suspension he has to serve and his recovery from a heart procedure and knee surgery.

With Opening Day less than two weeks away and Luis Severino officially out until May, the Yankees have a major decision to make on how to handle their starting rotation.

Manager Aaron Boone has announced Masahiro Tanaka as the Opening Day starter, followed by James Paxton and J.A. Happ, but after that still remains a mystery.

CC Sabathia is also not expected back until mid-April, but because of the off days built into the Yankees' schedule, they really only need one spot starter to fill the void until Severino returns.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he could envision his team using openers on some circumstances, especially considering two starting pitchers are dealing with injuries.

With Luis Severino being shut down for two weeks due to rotator cuff inflammation and CC Sabathia expected to start the season on the injured list, Boone said on Wednesday he wouldn't rule out the use of openers -- using relief pitchers to pitch the first inning or two of a game in an assurance to face the opponents' 1-3 hitters -- in 2019.

"I could see it being something we consider from time to time," Boone said, according to ESPN's Coley Harvey. "I don't see it a lot, but yeah, I could see it coming into play on certain occasions."

Viva, Las Vegas!

The Yankees struck quickly this offseason, acquiring James Paxton in a trade with the Mariners, but failed to lock down their perceived No. 1 free agent starting pitcher target in Patrick Corbin. However, a splash in Sin City could punctuate the team's offseason and indicate long-term direction of the organization.

The stars, literally and figuratively, have lined up for the Yankees to make a splash this winter.

The burden of heavy league taxes has been removed and a robust free-agent market is before them. The Yankees worked for years to diminish payroll expenditures with an eye toward the 2019 season.

The Yankees officially announced they have promoted left-handed pitchers Justus Sheffield and Domingo German. Clint Frazier was also transferred to the 60-day DL.

Sheffield last pitched on Sept. 2, when he tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Yankees moved Sheffield to the bullpen at the tail end of the minor league season and he made four consecutive relief appearances. He also appeared in relief on June 27, pitching six innings.

Chris Carelli, SNY.TV Facebook | Twitter | About Me | Archives: Talk of Sheffield's potential promotion began in July and the fact that it took this long is either related to the Yankees' belief that the young lefty was not effective enough to be a factor for the big league club or they mismanaged the chances to determine his potential impact...

With September upon us, the MLB allows all teams to activate anyone on their 40-man roster to join the big club throughout the month. While teams normally don't activate all of those players on the roster, bringing in some reinforcements to give players a break is usually taken advantage of.

The Yankees will definitely expand their roster, especially being slated for a playoff spot come October. Here are a few players that fans can expect to see in pinstripes this month...

There is no hiding the Yankees are banged up, given two of their sluggers -- Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge -- are both out due to injury. Judge said earlier Friday that he still hasn't been able to pick up a bat, and there is going to be discomfort in his fractured right hand for awhile.

As for Sanchez, though, manager Aaron Boone gave some promising news before the Yankees' matchup with the Rangers. He has been in Tampa rehabbing a right groin strain.

"I think he'll probably be on the ground running there this weekend and he'll fly here Sunday night to join us starting Monday," Boone told the YES Network before the game. "And I would say Monday we'll really ramp up as far as the hitting, starting to do catching things, and then the normal conditioning as well. But he's progressing well, feeling good."

In addition to Aaron Judge's fractured right wrist, the Yankees provided updates on several other players who are dealing with injuries.

Outfielder Clint Frazier, who is dealing with migraines and concussion-like symptoms, is traveling to Tampa, Florida, to "get to a point where he's symptom free," manager Aaron Boone said, according to ESPN's Coley Harvey. The team doesn't have a timetable for his return.

Frazier, who was hitting .265 with one RBI in 15 MLB games but .311 with 10 home runs and 21 RBIs in 48 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, left a RailRiders game on July 19 after feeling lightheaded. He said he has been feeling better, according to NJ.com's Brendan Kuty, but the Yankees don't want to take any chances.

There is little doubt the Yankees needed to upgrade their rotation, and the addition of J.A. Happ fit the bill. However, is the rest of the Yankees rotation strong enough to make a charge to catch the Red Sox with 61 games left on the schedule?

Happ is a certain upgrade over current No. 4 starter Sonny Gray, as well as the two pitchers -- Luis Cessa and Domingo German -- the Yankees had been interchanging of late in the No. 5 spot. However, Happ had been in a slump before his most recent start (five innings, one run), pitching to a 9.75 ERA over three starts.

Before the skid, Happ had tossed 97 innings to the tune of a 3.62 ERA with 107 strikeouts and just 27 walks. Happ's production was enough to get him named to the American League All-Star team, and the Yankees hope a chance to pitch in the postseason gets Happ back on track.

The Yankees have seen enough of Domingo German.

After another bad outing on Friday night in the Bronx, the Yankees announced they optioned German back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and announced Luis Cessa will replace him in the rotation.

German has shown spurts of great pitching, but mostly it has been struggles surrounding the 25-year-old rookie. Before the All-Star break, German threw a dud against the Indians, allowing six earned runs on five hits and four walks over four innings.

It is no secret the Yankees need starting pitching to get a second-half push toward the top of the AL East. For now, though, they will have to try and get good outings from the middle-to-back rotation starters.

Unfortunately, they didn't get that from one of those back-end arms as Domingo German continued to struggle on Friday against the Mets.

German threw another dud first inning to start off his outing. After walking Brandon Nimmo to lead off the game, Asdrubal Cabrera laced a double down the right field line to bring Nimmo all the way home for the first run of the game.

Brian Cashman has a problem: While his need for starting pitching is obvious, neither the choices nor the prices are appealing right now.

Not only that, but an alternative plan stalled when the San Diego Padres asked for Miguel Andujar for lefty reliever Brad Hand, according to major league sources. The Yankees said no thanks, and Hand went to Cleveland.

The Mets lost two of three games to the Yankees in their Subway Series in early June at Citi Field. They look for revenge coming out of the All-Star break in the Bronx.

Though the Mets have the second-worst record in the National League and face the Yankees, who have the second-best record in baseball, whoever wins this weekend's series will be the toast of the town, at least for the weekend.

Here is how each team stacks up for this weekend's three-game series.

The Mets have finalized their starting rotation for their Subway Series matchup against the Yankees following the All-Star break.

Noah Syndergaard will get the start on Friday in the series opener against Domingo German, while Steven Matz will pitch on Saturday and Jacob deGrom will be on the mound on Sunday in the series finale. Matz will be opposed by Sonny Gray on Saturday and Masahiro Tanaka will pitch for the Yankees in the series finale.

Syndergaard will make his second start since returning from the disabled list with a strained ligament in his finger, which forced him to miss more than two months of action.

German mediocre vs. Cleveland 00:05:00
The Baseball Night in New York panel debates which starter the Yankees should pursue after Domingo German struggled again against Cleveland.

The Yankees almost battled back from a four-run deficit, but they came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Indians on the road Friday night. >> Box score

Things to know about Thursday's game

1) This has been the story for Domingo German all season long. He has shown spurts like his last start where he can be dominant over a long stretch of a game. But then there's games like tonight, where he can't find the zone early and hits start to flurry accordingly. The Indians only collected five hits, but it resulted in six runs allowed by German due to his walks. Overall, he allowed four walks while striking out six over four innings of work.
