Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge may well be on their way back to the Yankees lineup, but it is the Bombers' starting pitching that is in greater need of a jolt.

CC Sabathia lasted just 4.2 innings in Friday night's 10-2 loss to the White Sox, allowing six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits and three walks raising his ERA to 4.42 on the season. Sabathia is 0-3 with a 6.89 ERA with hitters batting .375 against him in his last three starts.

The Yankees have now lost seven of their last 10 and have fallen out of first place in the AL East but manager Aaron Boone is not ready to sound the alarm bells just yet on his starting rotation.

The Yankees just can't catch a break when it comes to their starting rotation.

Domingo German, who was surprisingly one of the best rotation arms, hit the IL with a hip flexor strain last week. He was the latest starter to hit the list that has had the likes of James Paxton and CC Sabathia on it. Luis Severino has been a mainstay as well, suffering a lat strain that moved him to the 60-day IL.

The Yankees know they need to add help to makeup for these losses, and potential ones down the road. Many believed Dallas Keuchel would choose to wear pinstripes this season, but the Braves beat out their bid in the end.

The Yankees have placed RHP Domingo German on the 10-day IL with a left hip flexor strain, the team announced on Sunday.

After having a solid start to the season, German has faltered lately. He allowed just two homers in his first seven starts of the season, but his last six has seen 10 long balls. His latest start against the Indians on Friday saw four earned runs over six innings, that included two homers.

This injury, though, may the reason for German's lack of control and accuracy of his arsenal. Overall, he is still having a good season, as he is tied for the league lead in wins with nine. He also owns a modest 3.86 ERA over 70 innings of work with 77 strikeouts.

The corresponding move for German hitting the IL is LHP Stephen Tarpley getting called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees lost to the Indians, 5-2, at Progressive Field on Friday night. >> Box score

Four takeaways from Friday's game

1) Domingo German is trying to develop while pitching in the big leagues. It was working for his first several starts, but of late he's been missing spots and major league batters are making him pay. German allowed just two home runs in his first seven starts, but in his last six outings he's given up 10 homers. With German likely on an innings limit for the season, it is plausible that the Yankees could shift him to the bullpen once the club pulls off an expected trade for starting pitching.

Duquette on Yanks mound search 00:01:19
SNY baseball analyst Jim Duquette on Marcus Stroman as a desirable trade target to bolster the Yankees rotation

Anthony McCarron, SNY.tv | Twitter |

So Dallas Keuchel ended up in Atlanta instead of the Bronx. It's not the end of the (pitching) world for the Yankees.

If Brian Cashman decides his club needs rotation help, there ought to be plenty available as the MLB calendar flips from the amateur draft to the trading season.

How's this for choices? According to scouts and executives, the following pitchers are already on the market: Madison Bumgarner, Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman. Teams such as Kansas City and Seattle are putting out the word within the industry that they'll listen to offers on many of the players on their rosters, which could add potential inventory.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox, 5-3, Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. >> Box score

Five takeaways from Saturday's game...

1) Domingo German couldn't hold an early lead and then was knocked from the game with two outs in the fourth inning. This was German's shortest start of the season, one which has seen him win nine games. German was getting strikeouts (he had eight,) but he was inconsistent and the Red Sox worked deep counts to elevate his pitch count. German has now looked pedestrian (at best) in two straight outings - seven earned runs in five innings in his last start and three in 3.2 tonight.

The Yankees are reportedly a frontrunner for free agent left-hander Dallas Keuchel, according to SNY's Andy Martino. The report doesn't necessarily come as a surprise, as New York has long had a clear need.

Staff ace Luis Severino is out for the foreseeable future, Domingo German will eventually face an innings limit, and the durability of James Paxton and CC Sabathia will be monitored.

If the team does sign the 31-year-old after the amatuer draft, they won't need to give up a compensatory pick. This is an important factor of potentially signing Keuchel, as any team interested will likely be more willing to add a large one-year deal, the kind he's been seeking...

As everyone around baseball knows, the story of the New York Yankees season has been injuries. As of Wednesday, there are 14 players occupying the Injured List. Nevertheless, the team sits at 36-19 atop the AL East, and they've gotten to this point thanks to a handful of smart roster moves.

Signing DJ LeMahieu

Many thought that LeMahieu, a career .299 hitter, would see a dip in production in a full-time role away from the hitter-friendly Coors Field. He's quickly dispelled that notion en route to becoming one of the Yankees most important players.

The Yankees have had a rich history with the MLB All-Star Game. The team has sent at least three players to the Midsummer Classic in 24 of the last 25 years, and at least one player has started in 22 of those years. Two Yankees have won the All-Star Game MVP Award, which has helped the American League win 18 of the last 25 contests.

The Yankees will likely continue the legacy by sending at least four players to Cleveland this year. With fan voting having opened on Tuesday, let's take a look at who has the best case to represent the Yankees...

Gary Sanchez

Even with Aaron Judge, who has started the last two All-Star Games, likely missing this year's event due to injury, the Yankees still look poised to have a player in the starting lineup. No catcher has even come close to matching Sanchez's production this season, as the Yankees' backstop will likely make his first All-Star start in his second selection to the game.

The Yankees might sign Dallas Keuchel next week, and that would not preclude them from pivoting toward a trade for a high-end starting pitcher, according to major league sources.

As SNY has reported previously, the Yanks are targeting rotation help at the trade deadline above all other needs. With Domingo German facing possible innings restrictions, Luis Severino out for a long time, and CC Sabathia and James Paxton in various states of knee pain (Paxton returns Wednesday), the rotation is the team's clearest need.

The Yanks are not specifically viewing Keuchel as an alternative to sacrificing trade chips for a Marcus Stroman, Trevor Bauer or Zack Wheeler, all of whom would likely interest them. Teams are not yet talking in earnest about these trades, and typically wait until after the draft to do so.

The Yankees appear to be getting two critical pieces of their rotation back this week.

LHP James Paxton was activated off the IL on Tuesday, with RHP Joe Harvey being optioned to Triple-A, and will start on Wednesday against the Padres while LHP CC Sabathia appears to be on the horizon as well, with the potential to pitch on Sunday against the Red Sox.

While the Yankees have not announced their rotation beyond Wednesday, here is how it would likely play out with the Red Sox coming to town for a four-game set:

The Yankees came back to beat the Orioles 10-7 in a messy game Monday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. >> Box score

Five takeaway's from Monday's game

1) The Yankees, down 6-1 at one point, scored seven unanswered runs from the sixth inning onward, scoring five of those runs off of Orioles closer Mychal Givens. The big blow was Gary Sanchez's two-out, three-run home run that gave the Yankees the lead. For Sanchez, it was his 13th home run of the season; he now has 26 RBIs on the season.

When Domingo German stepped on the mound as a Yankee in 2018, the talent and the hint of potential success in the big leagues was evident. However, German failed to consistently deliver positive results and eventually fell out of favor down the stretch.

None of that matters to the Yankees now because it is clear that German gained valuable experience from all those major-league reps.

The Yankees' starting rotation took another hit on Monday when they placed Jonathan Loaisiga on the 10-day IL with a right rotator cuff strain.

Loaisiga will but shut down for four weeks with no throwing and joins left-hander James Paxton, whom he was replacing in the rotation, as well as ace Luis Severino among the Yankees starters on the IL.

Paxton is making progress and will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday and the Yankees have suggested he would not spend more than three weeks on the IL.

Brian Cashman has been a real "pain in the a--" for other GMs around baseball, at least according to Oakland Athletics executive vice president Billy Beane.

Beane told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic on Monday that he used to tease Cashman that the Yankees GM wanted to run the Bronx Bombers like a small-market team. Now, through the first 40 games of the 2019 season, it certainly feels like Cashman has gotten that chance.

Despite opening the season with a $203 million payroll, the Yankees have weathered the storm of an incredible amount of injuries to star players to a 24-16 record, sitting just a half-game out of the AL East lead.

If the Yankees plan on adding a pitcher this summer, a trade for Madison Bumgarner may not be so easy.

Aside from building an enticing package to offer the San Francisco Giants, the 29-year-old left-hander submitted a no-trade list comprising of eight teams, one of which is the Yankees, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Bumgarner, who is eligible to become a free agent in the offseason, has been rumored as a possible trade deadline chip as the Giants sit in last place 8.5 games out of the NL West lead.

While the Yankees may wait until after the MLB draft to pursue free-agent starting pticher Dallas Keuchel, there reportedly appears to be mutual interest.

The Yankees, Fancred's Jon Heyman said on WFAN on Thursday, are considered one of the favorites to sign Keuchel, who is still a free agent after rejecting the Astros' $17.9 million qualifying offer last offseason.

"I think the Yankees will be there for Keuchel," Heyman told WFAN's "Joe and Evan." "I think at this point, there's not a bad chance that the Yankees end up with Keuchel. Keuchel, from what I understand, would love to be in a big market, and the suitors for the most part to this point have not been of that ilk. ... If I had to pick one team out of the 30 right now, I would go with the Yankees."

The Yankees beat the Twins, 4-1, in a rain-shortened affair at Yankee Stadium. >> Box score

Five takeaways from Sunday's game

1) After coughing up four runs in his last start, Domingo German coasted to a one-run performance across 6 2/3 innings. German threw 108 pitches on his way to scattering four hits and three walks, while striking out seven batters. German has been fantastic filling in for Luis Severino, to the point that it's hard to suggest the club would have received better from its injured ace.

2) Mike Tauchman is by no means lighting the world on fire with his bat, but he has had some success at Yankee Stadium where seven of his eight hits have gone for extra bases, including today's two-run home run.

The Yankees seek a series victory over the Twins on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. in the Bronx.

Yankees notes

Gary Sanchez is off to an electric start in May. He's 5-for-10 in three games with three homers, including three in the last two days, with two walks. Even with an early-season stint on the injured list, Sanchez is batting .271/.354/.771 with 11 homers and 21 RBI. ... After returning Saturday and playing third base, Miguel Andújar will take over DH duties, while Sanchez moves behind the plate. ... Gleyber Torres extended his hit streak to 10 games Saurday. He's batting .333/.349/.500 with five extra-base hits and seven RBI during that stretch.

So Gio Gonzalez is a Milwaukee Brewer, finally, and it appears that Dallas Keuchel's asking price would still have to drop considerably for either the Yankees or Mets to consider signing him.

Yet it's a good bet that both local teams will be in the market for another starting pitcher come the July 31 trade deadline.

The Yankees beat the Giants 11-5 on Sunday, finishing off a sweep at Oracle Park. >> Box score

Six takeaways from Sunday's game

1) Domingo German's final line -- 6 IP, 5H, 4R, 1 BB and 4 K -- doesn't really tell how good he was for the most of this game. German cruised through his first five innings, allowing no runs on just one hit. German might have tired some in the sixth, as he was tagged for four runs on four hits. German (5-1) still got the win behind the Yankees' offense and continues to uphold his part in the team's rotation.

The Yankees can secure a sweep of the Giants on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. from Oracle Park.

Yankees notes

Gary Sanchez's first hit back from the injured list was a big one, as he bashed a grand slam during the Yankees' win Saturday. ... Luke Voit saw his 13-game hit streak snapped during the win. Over that stretch, he batted .367/.456/.673 with four home runs and 10 RBI. ... Brett Gardner returns to the three-hole after not hitting in that spot yet this series. He occupied the No. 3 slot in the order against the Angels, however.

The Yankees have been forced to make several call-ups this season, due to the 13 players currently on the IL. While the injured Yanks represent a virtual All-Star team, the team that is taking the field on a daily basis is made up of players not expected to be an integral part of the club.

Let's rank some of those players based on their ability to continue delivering "next man up" production (potentially in increased roles) throughout the rest of the season...

No. 6 - Jonathan Loaisiga

Luke Voit homered again in the first inning while Domingo German tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball as the ragtag Yankees won their fifth straight game and seventh of last eight with a 7-5 win over the Angels on Tuesday. >> Box score

Six takeaways from Monday's game

1) Luke Voit continues to rake, especially in the first inning. For the second straight game and fourth time this season Voit homered in the first inning to give the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead. He homered again in the eighth inning to cap a 2-for-4 day at the plate and extend his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 35 games.

The Yankees will be without yet another big bat on Tuesday as Clint Frazier gets the day off to rest a banged-up ankle as the Bombers take on the Angels in Anaheim at 10:07 p.m.

Yankees notes

The Yankees enter Tuesday night winning six of their last seven games and are just 2.5 games behind the AL East-leading Rays. ... Luke Voit has reached base in 33 consecutive games dating back to last year and is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak, blasting his fifth home run on Monday night. ... Thairo Estrada starts at second base in his first career MLB game. He had his first MLB at-bat on Sunday but is still seeking his first hit.

Gio Gonzalez appears increasingly likely to opt out of his minor league deal with the Yankees on Saturday, according to multiple major league sources. If he does, the Mets could be more of a fit than they were in the offseason.

On Friday, Gonzalez switched agents from Scott Boras to CAA. The move was intended to set him up with representation that he felt more comfortable with, in the event that he would become a free agent again.

If Gonzalez requests his release from the Yankees on Saturday, per a clause in his contract, the team will have 48 hours to add him to the major league roster. With Domingo German pitching capably and CC Sabathia back from the injured list, there is no obvious spot for Gonzalez -- though the Yankees could promote him and either piggyback him with German or put in him their rotation, in order to retain control.

Brett Gardner is staying in the leadoff spot after his clutch grand slam helped the Yanks beat the Red Sox on Wednesday. ... Mike Ford is set to make his MLB debut, batting seventh as the designated hitter. Ford was called up on Tuesday when Greg Bird went on the injured list with a plantar fascia tear. Ford was raking in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 16-for-39 with five homers, four doubles and 14 RBI. ... DJ LeMahieu slides back to third base with Tyler Wade playing second and Gio Urshela on the bench.

Gio Gonzalez has a decision to make this week.

There is an April 20 opt-out in the minor deal deal Gonzalez signed with the Yankees last month, giving him the chance to return to free agency if he hasn't been called up to the majors by Saturday.

"Right now, I'm not even thinking 30 teams," Gonzalez recently told the New York Post. "If it's not good enough for this team that I'm with right now, that's all that matters. I want to perform for the team that has me in their minors right now. Hopefully something happens."

CC leads Yanks past ChiSox 00:01:31
CC Sabathia pitched 5 strong innings in his season debut and Aaron Judge added a solo home run as the Yankees blanked the White Sox, 4-0

The Yankees beat the White Sox, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx >> Box score

Six takeaways from Saturday's game…

1) CC Sabathia, coming off the injured list to make his first start of the season, was spectacular. In five innings, Sabathia allowed just one base runner (on a single) and struck out three. Sabathia, who will be retiring at season's end, is now 11 strikeouts away from 3,000 for his career, which should aid his bid to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Before we concern ourselves with Sabathia's career worth, right now the Yanks can use some of the stopper stuff he's possessed the last couple of seasons. He provided it Saturday.

Aaron Judge has struck out four times over his last two games and is on pace to strike out 249 times this season.

If any Yankee fans were looking for Aaron Boone to call out his team or turn over a food table after the Houston Astros completed their sweep on Wednesday, they were once again disappointed by the even-tempered manager.

And as unsatisfying as it might be for a bloodthirsty public, Boone was exactly right, both in style and substance, when he said the following:

Or is the Yankee GM already plotting a way to trade for Madison Bumgarner?

Yankees RHP Domingo German threw six strong innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in Sunday's 15-3 victory over the Orioles at Camden Yards.

"The key today was to mix my pitches and be unpredictable out there, try to use my changeup in a way that they weren't expecting it," German said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "That's something I worked on in between starts. It worked out very well for me today."

The Yankees launch seven home runs, beating the Orioles, 15-3, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. >> Box score

Five things to know about Sunday's game..

1) Domingo German was in control from the outset of this game (after allowing five walks in his first outing), in which he didn't allow a base hit until a one-out single in the sixth inning. German's final line - 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 3 K - is one which will make it easy for the Yankees to keep him in the rotation while Luis Severino remains on the injured list.
