The Yankees (83-44, 10.0 GA in AL East) continue their nine-game road trip on the West Coast in Oakland against the Athletics (72-53, 8.0 GB in AL West, 0.0 GB in Wild Card) on Wednesday at 10:07 p.m.

Yankees notes

After Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the A's, the Yankees aim to end their two-game skid, which includes Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians. They notched 11 hits but managed only two runs, both coming on solo shots by DH Gary Sanchez and RF Aaron Judge in the top of the first and eighth innings, respectively. Despite Tuesday's loss, the Yankees remained 10 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and maintained a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the MLB's best record at 83-44.

He finished the game after 5.1 innings of work, allowing a total of five earned runs on eight hits. German did strike out seven batters, but it wasn't enough to slow down the A's offense. The Yankees (83-43, 10.0 GA in AL East) start their nine-game road trip on the West Coast with a three-game series against the Athletics (71-53, 8.0 GB in AL West, 1.0 GB in Wild Card) on Tuesday at 10:07 p.m.

Yankees notes

The Yankees are coming off of a tough 8-4 loss to the Indians, where LHP CC Sabathia only lasted three innings in his first start since being removed from the DL. He allowed four hits and four runs, including a three-run home run, to go along with five strikeouts and three walks. Sabathia is now 5-7 on the season with a 5.01 ERA, and hasn't registered a win since June 24. RF Aaron Judge is still trying to break out of his recent slump, going 2-for-5 from the plate with a RBI double... however, he did strikeout twice. The team does still have the best record in the MLB at 83-43, and is behind only the Astros and Dodgers for the best odds to win the World Series.

With the Yankees rolling along toward a division title, fans are naturally turning their thoughts to the playoff rotation. This year, it's a particularly hot topic because the general manager declined to add to it at the trade deadline.

The Yankees insist, both publicly and in private, that they haven't begun to think in earnest about the playoff roster and rotation -- though we can report, as we did in June, that the team is eyeing a Chad Green/Luis Severino game, provided the latter is healthy.

Domingo German is the MLB's leader in wins this season, after his latest start against the Orioles gave him his 16th victory. But, with that win, it was worth noting how many innings the 26-year-old has already racked up this season.

German has pitched 116 innings so far this season, which shatters his career-high in the bigs at 85.2. Back in 2017, he pitched a total 109 innings, but that's it.

SNY's John Harper spoke to an AL executive to see what the Yankees should do if German hits an inning limit and can't be used in the postseason, but GM Brian Cashman gave the answer we've been looking for on Thursday.

Late Wednesday afternoon I was talking to an executive from an American League team about the Yankees and their potential pitching plan for October, when he suggested I take a look at the box score of the Red Sox-Indians game that had been over for about an hour.

"Boston used seven pitchers and won the game 5-1," the exec said. "Seven pitchers, one run. That's taking the 'opener' strategy to an extreme, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Yankees try a formula like that in the postseason.

Depth in Major League Baseball is hardly a constant. One of the more unpredictable aspects of the sport, teams' depth shifts almost daily, while roster overhauls occur in the offseasons. Two things are difficult to achieve - consistent production from backups and helping other teams' castoffs realize their potential.

Enter, the 2019 Yankees, who have pulled off both despite injuries and an influx of new faces.

In the ever evolving analytics-driven game, New York has clearly been in the upper tier of searching for and acquiring depth options.

The Yankees wouldn't be where they are in 2019 without the rise of Domingo German. The lanky 26-year-old righty leads the majors with 12 wins and has a tidy 3.38 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 95 strikeouts in 88.0 innings this season.

This of course comes after a 2018 season where German had a 5.57 ERA and did not look like a big league starting pitcher.

German's emergence has even caught the eye of his former manager, Joe Girardi. In an interview with Mike Francesa, Girardi said, "He's been a blessing for the Yankees, and you think that [five] years ago, the Yankees traded for him and he went through some injuries, but gosh is he good now."

Indeed, German is very good now. The key to his success is an approach where even though hitters know what's coming, they just can't touch it.

Brett Gardner will miss his second straight game after being removed from Sunday's lineup with what manager Aaron Boone called a "barking knee"... Mike Tauchman performed admirably in Gardner's absence and is 8-for-16 over his last seven games, including his sixth homer of the season in Sunday's loss to the Rockies... Aaron Hicks continued his scorching July with his 10th home run of the season on Sunday. The switch-hitter is slashing .333/.414/.667 this month.

Life is good for a baseball team that is 57-31, the best record in the American League. But while the Yankees might be favorites to go back to the World Series for the first time in a decade, that doesn't mean the second half of the regular season is just about lining up the playoff rotation.

Yes, even juggernauts have potential trouble areas and question marks. With that in mind, we offer five things to watch while the Yanks try to hold their sizable 6.5-game lead in the AL East over the season's final two and a half months.

The Yankees (54-29, 5.5 GA in AL East) face the Mets (39-47, 11 GB in NL East, 6 GB in NL wild card) in the final Subway Series game of 2019 on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field.

Yankees notes

In eight games since being activated off the injured list with an oblique strain, Aaron Judge is hitting .296/.441/.519 with two home runs and six RBIs. ... Gleyber Torres is 9-for-20 with one home run and three RBIs during his six-game hitting streak. ... Tuesday's game was the first time in 31 games that the Yankees did not hit a home run. That streak broke the 2002 Texas Rangers' previous record of 27 games.

Domingo German returned to the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday night, and his first pitch didn't find Gary Sanchez' glove. It found the bullpen in right center field for a leadoff homer by Jeff McNeil, one of the Mets' All-Stars.

Luckily for the Yanks, it wasn't an omen as German cruised from that point on.

The righty, coming off an IL stint for a hip flexor strain, allowed just that one run on five hits while striking out six and walking none over six innings of work. The performance was everything manager Aaron Boone wanted to see from German's return.

The Yankees rebounded from Tuesday's loss to beat the Mets 5-1 on Wednesday at Citi Field. >> Box score

Five takeaways from Wednesday's game

1) After about one month on the injured list, Domingo German got off to a rough start, allowing a home run on his first pitch of the ball game. However, the Mets would get nothing more off of German, who looked much like the pitcher he was in the beginning of the season the rest of the way. German finished with 80 pitches (56 strikes) and generated 13 swings and misses (seven from his curveball) en route to six strikeouts and zero walks.

Jeff McNeil clubs 7th HR 00:00:15
New York Mets outfielder Jeff McNeil launches his 7th home run of the season to narrow the Yankees lead to 2-1.

The Yankees came out hot against the Mets in their final meeting of the season. But Jeff McNeil came out hot as well.

After the Yankees scored twice in the top of the first inning at Citi Field on Wednesday, McNeil wasted no time in cutting into their lead. Swinging at the first pitch of the game from Domingo German, McNeil sent it over the right field fence to get the Mets on the board.

Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge may well be on their way back to the Yankees lineup, but it is the Bombers' starting pitching that is in greater need of a jolt.

CC Sabathia lasted just 4.2 innings in Friday night's 10-2 loss to the White Sox, allowing six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits and three walks raising his ERA to 4.42 on the season. Sabathia is 0-3 with a 6.89 ERA with hitters batting .375 against him in his last three starts.

The Yankees have now lost seven of their last 10 and have fallen out of first place in the AL East but manager Aaron Boone is not ready to sound the alarm bells just yet on his starting rotation.

The Yankees just can't catch a break when it comes to their starting rotation.

Domingo German, who was surprisingly one of the best rotation arms, hit the IL with a hip flexor strain last week. He was the latest starter to hit the list that has had the likes of James Paxton and CC Sabathia on it. Luis Severino has been a mainstay as well, suffering a lat strain that moved him to the 60-day IL.

The Yankees know they need to add help to makeup for these losses, and potential ones down the road. Many believed Dallas Keuchel would choose to wear pinstripes this season, but the Braves beat out their bid in the end.

The Yankees have placed RHP Domingo German on the 10-day IL with a left hip flexor strain, the team announced on Sunday.

After having a solid start to the season, German has faltered lately. He allowed just two homers in his first seven starts of the season, but his last six has seen 10 long balls. His latest start against the Indians on Friday saw four earned runs over six innings, that included two homers.

This injury, though, may the reason for German's lack of control and accuracy of his arsenal. Overall, he is still having a good season, as he is tied for the league lead in wins with nine. He also owns a modest 3.86 ERA over 70 innings of work with 77 strikeouts.

The corresponding move for German hitting the IL is LHP Stephen Tarpley getting called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees lost to the Indians, 5-2, at Progressive Field on Friday night. >> Box score

Four takeaways from Friday's game

1) Domingo German is trying to develop while pitching in the big leagues. It was working for his first several starts, but of late he's been missing spots and major league batters are making him pay. German allowed just two home runs in his first seven starts, but in his last six outings he's given up 10 homers. With German likely on an innings limit for the season, it is plausible that the Yankees could shift him to the bullpen once the club pulls off an expected trade for starting pitching.

The Yankees (39-22, 1.5 GA in AL East) begin their weekend series with the Cleveland Indians (31-31, 10.5 GB in AL Central) on Friday at 7:10 p.m. at Progressive Field.

Yankees notes

Didi Gregorius makes his return to the Yankees' lineup eight months after his Tommy John surgery, playing shortstop and batting fifth. ... Gleyber Torres is out of the lineup for the second-straight game due to shoulder soreness. ... Prior to this week's matchup with the Blue Jays, the Yankees hadn't lost a series since they were swept in two games by the Diamondbacks on April 30th-May-1. ... DJ LeMahieu is now hitting .491 with runners in scoring position and has a team-leading 40 RBI.

Duquette on Yanks mound search 00:01:19
SNY baseball analyst Jim Duquette on Marcus Stroman as a desirable trade target to bolster the Yankees rotation

Anthony McCarron, SNY.tv | Twitter |

So Dallas Keuchel ended up in Atlanta instead of the Bronx. It's not the end of the (pitching) world for the Yankees.

If Brian Cashman decides his club needs rotation help, there ought to be plenty available as the MLB calendar flips from the amateur draft to the trading season.

How's this for choices? According to scouts and executives, the following pitchers are already on the market: Madison Bumgarner, Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman. Teams such as Kansas City and Seattle are putting out the word within the industry that they'll listen to offers on many of the players on their rosters, which could add potential inventory.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox, 5-3, Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. >> Box score

Five takeaways from Saturday's game...

1) Domingo German couldn't hold an early lead and then was knocked from the game with two outs in the fourth inning. This was German's shortest start of the season, one which has seen him win nine games. German was getting strikeouts (he had eight,) but he was inconsistent and the Red Sox worked deep counts to elevate his pitch count. German has now looked pedestrian (at best) in two straight outings - seven earned runs in five innings in his last start and three in 3.2 tonight.

The Yankees are reportedly a frontrunner for free agent left-hander Dallas Keuchel, according to SNY's Andy Martino. The report doesn't necessarily come as a surprise, as New York has long had a clear need.

Staff ace Luis Severino is out for the foreseeable future, Domingo German will eventually face an innings limit, and the durability of James Paxton and CC Sabathia will be monitored.

If the team does sign the 31-year-old after the amatuer draft, they won't need to give up a compensatory pick. This is an important factor of potentially signing Keuchel, as any team interested will likely be more willing to add a large one-year deal, the kind he's been seeking...

As everyone around baseball knows, the story of the New York Yankees season has been injuries. As of Wednesday, there are 14 players occupying the Injured List. Nevertheless, the team sits at 36-19 atop the AL East, and they've gotten to this point thanks to a handful of smart roster moves.

Signing DJ LeMahieu

Many thought that LeMahieu, a career .299 hitter, would see a dip in production in a full-time role away from the hitter-friendly Coors Field. He's quickly dispelled that notion en route to becoming one of the Yankees most important players.

The Yankees have had a rich history with the MLB All-Star Game. The team has sent at least three players to the Midsummer Classic in 24 of the last 25 years, and at least one player has started in 22 of those years. Two Yankees have won the All-Star Game MVP Award, which has helped the American League win 18 of the last 25 contests.

The Yankees will likely continue the legacy by sending at least four players to Cleveland this year. With fan voting having opened on Tuesday, let's take a look at who has the best case to represent the Yankees...

Gary Sanchez

Even with Aaron Judge, who has started the last two All-Star Games, likely missing this year's event due to injury, the Yankees still look poised to have a player in the starting lineup. No catcher has even come close to matching Sanchez's production this season, as the Yankees' backstop will likely make his first All-Star start in his second selection to the game.
