One week after the Giants made the controversial decision to select Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall, they added another rookie QB to the fold.
Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey is one of 13 undrafted free-agent signings the Giants announced ahead of this weekend's rookie minicamp.
Last season, Dungey led the Orange to its first 10-win season since 2001, throwing for 2,868 yards and 18 touchdowns in 13 games. In his final game, he became the program's all-time passing leader, breaking former Giant Ryan Nassib's record and finishing with 9,340 career yards.
A phone call with Giants head coach Pat Shurmur convinced Dungey to sign.
"We were kind of all over the board probably until Tuesday late afternoon," Dungey's father Tim told Syracuse.com. "Shurmur called Eric, and they had a long conversation and he made Eric feel pretty good.
"There are no guarantees, drafted or not. You have to go earn it."
According to the Syracuse.com report, at least one NFL team was interested in adding Dungey both as a quarterback and utility player, and Dungey has apparently become more willing to play a different position if it gives him a better chance to stick in the NFL.
The Giants had Dungey also listed as a tight end in addition to QB when rookie camp began on Friday.
If Dungey stays on the Giants into the summer, Eli Manning will have another first-year quarterback in the room to mentor.
