Yesterday, two more joined the legion headed for season-ending IR: CB Brian Witherspoon, who tore an ACL on o punt return in Monday's game vs Chicago and DT Marvin Austin, who will miss the 2011 season with a torn pectoral muscle.
Head coach Tom Coughlin is obviously disappointed in the latest rash of injuries (add in Osi Umenyiora and Prince Amukamara and it just makes your stomach turn). He joked to reporters why no one wanted to talk about the blocked punt, then revealed the team's strategy to address the sudden dearth of experience at cornerback....
"We’ll do the best we can do to gather as many players, quality players, as we can at this point in time. Try to get them in here for a workout and see where we are. We do have, I think it’s five healthy corners and we certainly want to make sure that we do have more so that we can play these final couple of preseason games."
They'll all get a test right out of the gate Saturday with the Jets' Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress, who both caught TDs last week vs Cincinnati.
The Giants did, however, fill Austin's spot almost immediately by signing veteran DT Jimmy Kennedy a former first- round pick of the Rams who hails from Yonkers by the way of Penn State.
Co-owned Steve Tisch said yesterday at the MetLife press conference that the 18-game season concept was not dead.
"This is an issue internally that is going to come up. I don't know when. I don't know under what circumstances. I don't know if it is going to be spring '12 or fall '13. But it's an issue that I think the owners have paid a lot of attention to and will continue to."
We heard Da'Rel Scott was fast, but how fast we didn't know...he had three gears working on that 97-yard TD run on Monday night and maybe is hiding a fourth gear somewhere. Just something to look forward to....
