ESPN insider Mel Kiper is changing his mind for who the Giants will select with their No. 2 overall pick come April.
Instead of going with a quarterback, Kiper has the Giants taking Penn State RB Saquon Barkley with their top pick. He previously had UCLA QB Josh Rosen as his favorite, but he thinks New York can't pass up on bringing in Barkley's talent to work alonside the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. and the rest of the Giants stellar receiving crew.
"Do the Giants take a quarterback or the best prospect available? They don't have quite as many needs as the Browns, and they won 11 games two seasons ago," Kiper wrote. "New York has some talent. I went with Josh Rosen in Mock Draft 1.0, but Barkley is the top-ranked player on my Big Board. If the Giants can add Barkley to a group that includes Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram, that would be rare skill-position talent. Barkley is more than a great runner -- he is a stellar receiver (he caught 54 passes in 2017) and pass-blocker. Eli Manning should be more efficient with these weapons around him, and the Giants can use another year of evaluation to figure out if 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb is the heir apparent."
Despite Manning's struggles and the Giants season going down the dumps, Webb never got a chance to see regular season action, as former head coach Ben McAdoo decided to make Geno Smith the starter over him when he sat Manning. Many in the Giants organization praised Webb for his work ethic, constantly in the gym or film room as he worked alongside Manning.
So, there is a possibility the Giants are still high on his potential to lead them in the future.
Barkely is arguably the best athlete and all-around player exiting the Draft this year. He rushed for 1,271 yards (5.9 YPC) and 18 touchdowns in his junior season. He also had 54 receptions for 632 yards and three touchdowns. Barkley is a do-it-all back that can pass-block, and even work as a returner if need be.
If the Giants feel they can wait on selecting a quarterback with Manning as their guy and Webb behind him, Barkley would make an immediate impact next season.
