My basic response is let's see who they do in Round 1 tonight and then tomorrow and Saturday speculate about those rounds. If I have my way, the Giants hit it big tonight and tomorrow and make Saturday a non-event.
They can stay the course and select some good players, or they can be proactive and creative and get themselves some difference-makers.
When you draft in the Top 10, you can't waste it on a player that will not be an every down player. So cross off situational players such as EDGE rushers that cannot play the run or DTs that come off the field on third down. You also can't draft a player at a need position that you can get on Day Two or Three, such as a marginal DB.
So all of you people who want Vic Beasley, Bud Dupree and Trae Waynes....sorry.
If the Giants stay at No. 9, Iowa OL Brandon Scherff is my guy. He is the best fit for the Giants. Period. The only players I have ahead of him are DE/LB Dante Fowler, DL Leonard Williams and possibly WRs Amari Cooper and Kevin White.
Unfortunately, most or all of those players will be gone by the time the Giants select at No. 9. For a team that needs an infusion of talent, that is a problem. The Giants have to start getting aggressive in the draft. At least this year. They have a ton of B-level talent in the building. Time to bring in some studs.
Scherff is projected to be a Pro Bowl-caliber offensive linemen that all experts, to a man, agree is as close a can't-miss prospect as there is. Rumors are flying that Washington at five and the Jets at six are both high on him.
Fowler is a great playmaker that would start on any defense in the NFL right now. The Giants' defense is horrible right now and Fowler would immediately raise the level of play.
Williams will, too. He is a disrupter who has been compared to Gerald McCoy, Kevin Williams and even Reggie White.
Neither player will get out of the top five if everyone did their homework. Both have been rumored to Jacksonville at three, but the Jaguars are also entertaining the notion of drafting Cooper.
Both Cooper and White would ease the anxiety of possibly losing Victor Cruz, plus add another threat in the passing game, which is the Giants' bread and butter. One or both could be available at nine. I prefer White over Cooper because he appears to be the more physical of the two. Cooper is a superior route-runner from a big program that has played in big games and is more polished.
Staying at No. 9 guarantees the Giants that they will get a good player, but will it be the impact player they need to make a difference? I said in prior posts that this draft is about quantity, not quality, so if Jerry Reese can muscle his way into the top five without emptying the cupboard, he should do it.
The Giants acquired Williams' contact information this week, so they may be plotting to make a run at him. That excites me.
My wish list in Round One: Fowler, Williams, Scherff, White, Cooper.
Dark horses for NYG in Round One at No. 9 or if they trade back....FSU OL Cameron Erving, Washington DL Danny Shelton, RB Todd Gurley of Georgia. Miami OL Ereck Flowers, ASU safety Damarious Randall.
