It is a shame that one of them has to go. Both have performed admirably this preseason. They have been going blow for blow each week, one upstaging the other and making the coaches' decision on who to keep and who to cut more difficult.
Last night, again, it was hard to say who was the better punter. Dodge punted three times for and average or 44 yards. Weatherford averaged 42 yards on two attempts. Both had punts land inside the 20. Dodge had a 53-yarder, but also recorded a touchback.
Weatherford still appears to be the better option, but he has brought out the best in Dodge this summer. The Giants have invested a lot in Dodge and would hate to cut him, especially if his best football lies ahead.
Perhaps the only way this gets settled is by determining who fits best on the team's roster. Weatherford is currently the holder for FGs and PATs. The only other player who has experience in that area is backup QB Sage Rosenfels, who did not play again last night due to a back injury.
If Rosenfels is cut in favor of David Carr, then Dodge could be in trouble. He can hold, also, but is not adept at it. K Lawrence Tynes would prefer someone other than Dodge. With Rosenfels gone, Weatherford would be the guy - and as we said - the Giants are not carrying two punters...
