Rivera, a minority head coach, called this year's crop of new hires especially disheartening and suggested Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell -- who did not receive an interview for any of the vacancies -- should have been in consideration.
“I’ll give you a name, Perry Fewell,” Rivera said, referring to the Giants defensive coordinator. “He’s a great coach and I really think he should have been in the cycle.”Steve Spagnuolo was hired by the St. Louis Rams following the Giants' '07 Super Bowl victory, but a year removed from a Lombardi Trophy following their most recent championship, Fewell's defense did not wow anybody.
“This guy went to the Super Bowl last year and helped design a [heck of a] defense,” Rivera said. “Sometimes you do sit there and go, ‘Wow, some guys do get overlooked,’ and it’s happened to me, too. Hopefully Perry will have a great opportunity next year.”
The Giants allowed 383 yards per game, second only to the New Orleans Saints. Opponents converted 42 percent of third-downs against the Giants, tied for third-worst in the league.
