"No, of course not. How could it be?" the coach quipped. "We didn’t sack the guy the other day. We’re better than that. When we do get there we have to get them in our grasp. We had two or three times the other day where we had the quarterback in our grasp and didn’t quite get it done."
The reasons? Well, they're many. Osi Umenyiora, one of the franchise's top all-time pass rushers, took his skills to Atlanta. Jason Pierre-Paul (right) is still recovering from offseason back surgery. Justin Tuck is trying to rebound from back-to-back down seasons. Mathias Kiwanuka is still acclimating back to the DE rotation after serving several years as an OLB.
Tuck has picked up his game. He leads the Giants with 16 total tackles thus far, but his counterpart, JPP, has not performed anywhere near his All-Pro form. He knows it, too.
"Me personally, I know I’m not playing as well, like I did in the past, but it is what it is. I’m just doing my best, no excuses, I just have to get healthy. If you were all in the same position, you would all do the same thing," JPP said.
His best isn't getting the job done right now. Surely, he'll improve with time but right now he's not an asset to the defense.
"It takes time, but that’s no excuse," said JPP. "I’m out there, I have to do whatever it takes to win, to help my team win."
It was suggested to Coughlin that he might try giving the the impressive rookie, Damontre Moore, an expanded role on the defense.
"That’s a novel thought," said Coughlin, who has held Moore back due a sore shoulder. "Whoever’s on our team is going to be in that position. Let’s have a good week of practice there. Let’s make sure the kid is really ready to go and then let’s see what we can do about that."
Moore is ready for when the opportunity comes along. He expressed his eagerness in a short QandA with reporters today....
What do you need to do to get on the field?Just go out there and keep working hard and they’re going to put me in the right situation. I just say, yes, sir.
Q: How much confidence did you get from your first preseason game?It gave me a little bit, but I really haven’t been thinking about it. It was so long ago. I don’t try to reflect on the past like that. I learn from it and then I just move on.
Q: Were you only on special teams last week?Special teams and one play of defense. It felt good being back out there. It’s like anything you’ve been away from that you love for a long time. You get all that excitement and then all of a sudden, it’s back to normal. After the first play, it all goes out the window. Overall, I was happy to just be out there and just trying to help my team and put them in the best situation.
Q: Do you have a feeling that you might be in the rotation this week at all?I’m not sure. We just started the week. I’m just going to play it by ear and see what happens the rest of this week.
The pass rush is a big issue for this team right now. Do you feel like if you are in there that you can provide a spark?Yes, sir. I’m just going to go in there and whenever my time comes, I’m just going to make sure I’m ready and I give it my all and leave it all out there on the field.
