The free agent would only add depth to the Giants at the running back position, as the team can rest surely on the legs of sophomore David Wilson and his capable backup, Andre Brown.
Rounding out the depth chart is former Terp Da'Rel Scott and Ryan Torain. The Giants also added Michael Cox out of Massachusetts in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, then signed Jeremy Wright out of Louisville in the subsequent days.
Hightower's name has been connected to Big Blue since the end of March, though a workout had never been scheduled until Wednesday.
Hightower, 26, did not play in 2012 due to an ACL injury. In 2011 with Washington, he rushed for 321 yards and one touchdowns. In his first three seasons prior with Arizona, Hightower played in all 16 games each season, increasing his yardage every year.
With so much depth and talent -- and not to mention youth -- at the running back position, the Giants seem pretty set. Adding Hightower would seem to be an unnecessary move at this point.
Though Brown and Scott are coming off of injuries, and Torain has a history of missing games, another body would not be the worst precaution the Giants could take.
