Henrik Lundqvist spoke today about facing former teammates Ryan Callahan, Brian Boyle and Anton Stralman for the first time all three left the Rangers. (NYR)

Lundqvist said, "interesting battle. A couple of guys that I played with for quite some time and I got to know them really well. They are doing well and playing with a lot of confidence."

Asked if it was going to be weird seeing Boyle and Callahan skating down on him, Lundqvist said "we will see but probably. You get used to it. You get to know a lot of players over the years and then they switch teams and then you face them in the next game. First time you see them out there in warmups it's maybe a different look but then you get used to them and then you prepare for the game but not during the game. It's more going into the game."

Following the Rangers win over the Hurricanes, Alain Vigneault was asked if he thought Henrik Lundqvist was ready for the playoffs.

Vigneault responded, "oh yea....he's ready."

  • In 14 games in March, Lundqvist was 8-5-1 with a .917 GAA and a 2.44 goals against.
  • In 4 games in April, Lundqvist is 2-1-1 with a .948 save percentage and a 1.71 goals against.
  • On the season, Lundqvist is 32-24-5 with a .920 save percentage and a 2.39 goals against.
He said after the game against Carolina that he is trying to get into the habits of how he wants to play when the playoffs start, "you don't want to change and you want to focus on the details, it needs to be here now and next week and you can't take any shortcuts, you need to focus the same way and take each game as an important game. Who knows, it could play a huge part in the end if we get the extra points at the end and get a better spot."

He added, "I think I am approaching the right way. Focusing the right way. Technically I am doing the right things in game and practice and there are always things here and there that you remind yourself to work on. I think I am getting closer to where I want to be and need to be as the games get tougher. I see it as a great challenge to reach your top level.

5PM: Lundqvist said today (Rangers):

  • "the biggest goal that I have in my hockey career right now is to win the Stanley Cup. It's exciting to think about and a big challenge for everyone in here. That is why we play. We enjoy this game but the best part is when you win and that is what drives you."
  • "sometimes it surprises me when someone talks about championships because we aren't playing tennis or golf, this is a team sport and you need to be good but also part of a great team to win. You need to have timing as well when you play a team sport, to play on a team that gets on a roll. As a goalie I have a big part but it's not tennis or golf. It's not just you it's about getting everything to work together and going from there."
  • On how he feels about the team, "it's a process and I appreciate the patience that hte coahces showed early on because it took some time. I am proud that we overcame that and get back in and here we are and giving ourselves an opportunity to play in the playoffs. It's been an interesting year and a year where you learn a lot about the team and yourself. A lot of ups and downs..you learn every year and each year is different. The team is different, new coach, new system so each year you have a different feel because the results are different and I try to learn every year."
2:14PM: Alain Vigneault said after practice today that Henrik Lundqvist will start tomorrow against Buffalo but is 50/50 for Saturday's game in Montreal. (Rangers)

On TSN Drive last night, Jamie McLennan discussed Henrik Lundqvist and where his game is at in advance of the Gold Medal game against Canada tomorrow.

He said, "In today?s modern day it?s Henrik Lundqvist who is the number one guy. Lundqvist still has to get the nod in net head to head based on experience. Lundqvist is so good playing at Olympic ice because he plays a deep game. He is at home on a lot of side to side plays but where that translates and where maybe Team Canada can get to him, just like in the NHL is there is no margin for error so if one sneaks through the body it will go in"

McKennan adds, "he has played a game like Finland where he made a great backdoor save on Selanne today where he plays that deep style, that east/west. If Canada plays that North/South and gets in his grill and creates a lot of traffic they can get to him. He does get frustrated. He is the type of guy that I have noticed can get a little more frustrated as guys get bodies in front. I think that is where Canada will try to push him."

For that mice like cheese. Nyholm chumps and ironically on that Lundqvist "does not have a Stanley Cup title. And hardly going to get any. It is uncertain whether Lunkvisti ever asked a Finnish goalkeeper how trophy conquered. Since they of course do that. "
