On Episode 2 of The Cookie Club, Steve Gelbs was joined by Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis to discuss a number of issues, including one that relates to the team's wardrobe.

Yes, the Mets' black uniforms are very polarizing. You either love them or you hate them, and there seems to be no middle ground.

But a good number of people want to see the black jerseys brought back, and it sounds like Smith and Davis are 100 percent on board.

"I mean, the old-school black, that's obvious, like that should already be in the rotation," said Smith. "I say we need to bring back maybe the Los Mets ones, the all-orange. I like the orange unis, those were pretty sick, or even the old school 1986 team, the pinstripes, I mean I like that one too. We need a rotation of like five unis so we can swag out. We need the orange. I even like the camo every Sunday for military appreciation night. We gotta swag it out!"

Baseball isn't just about statistics, home run totals, and wins and losses. It's also about emotions, thrills, chills and personal stories that we can invest in.

Thankfully, the Mets are never short on stories and bizarre moments worth dissecting.

That said, here are five storylines I hope to see in 2020...

Major League Baseball and all other major sports remain on hold as the United States and the rest of the world practices social distancing in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus.

When things start to return to normal and the 2020 baseball season -- hopefully -- begins, the Mets will have a bunch of roster and lineup decisions facing them after what will very likely be an abbreviated second spring training of sorts.

Among those decisions...

Less than a week after Major League Baseball and all other major sports in the United States shut down due to coronavirus, the country is already a much different place.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were 6,519 known coronavirus cases in the U.S., with New York (1,717 confirmed cases) having the most in the country. Some cities, including San Francisco, have ordered residents to shelter in place. And New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday that the peak of the coronavirus pandemic in the city could be in early-May.

J.D. Davis, Luis Guillorme, Robert Gsellman, and Dominic Smith are all quickly approaching a make-or-break point in their respective careers. And, though they have not yet hit the typical age considered to be a player's 'prime years,' their clocks are ticking given their ages and contract status.

If they were each a public traded company, would I be buying them, selling or holding?

1) Dominic Smith >> BUY

When first promoted to the Mets during the summer of 2017, Smith was considered their second-best prospect and the top first base prospect in baseball.

Before the MLB season was suspended, Mets' outfielder Brandon Nimmo was listed as one of 15 players that was "turning scouts' heads" in spring training, according to Baseball America.

Nimmo was limited to just 69 games last year due to a neck injury. But in his first season as a full-time player in 2018, Nimmo and his fan-favorite smile posted a .404 on-base percentage, the fifth-highest in baseball. Despite hitting just .221 in his abbreviated 2019, Nimmo still posted a .375 on-base percentage.

In 11 spring training games, Nimmo was red hot, posting a slashline of .379/.455/.552.

Michael Conforto's status for Opening Day was very much in doubt before Major League Baseball canceled the remainder of spring training and delayed the start of the regular season by at least two weeks due to coronavirus.

While Conforto could now potentially return by Opening Day (which will be no earlier than April 9), it's still unclear how the oblique injury he suffered will impact his 2020 season and -- potentially -- his future with the Mets.

According to one agent and a rival team executive who spoke with MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone, Conforto's injury could jeopardize the chances of the Mets soon making him a lucrative contract extension offer.

Jacob deGrom made his second start of spring training Wednesday, headlining the Mets' 7-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Five days removed from his latest simulated game last Friday, he fired four near-perfect innings, striking out three with one run on one hit -- a solo home run to Matt Carpenter in the top of the fourth inning.

Following up on his March 1 debut in the Mets' 3-1 victory against the Washington Nationals, when he threw three shutout frames with two strikeouts and one hit.

5 things to know about Wednesday's game...

1) Jacob deGrom looked every bit the reigning two-time NL Cy Young winner, retiring the first 10 hitters he faced in order, including a perfect opening three frames. Matt Carpenter tagged him with a solo home run in the fourth to break the streak, but that would be the only hit deGrom allowed over 4.0 innings of work. He struck out three hitters without a walk and lowered his spring ERA to 1.29.

The Mets already have moved J.D. Davis between 3B and LF, but if they need the 26-year-old to take up a third position into his rotation, he's open.

New York's potential decision with Davis comes on the heels of RF Michael Conforto's Grade 1 oblique strain from over the weekend Saturday.

As Conforto's status for Opening Day March 26 remains in jeopardy, Davis said that he's open to adding RF onto his resume. Any tweak is dependent on the 27-year-old Conforto's reevaluation.

Injured Mets outfielder Michael Conforto, whose status for Opening Day on March 26 is very much in doubt, spoke on Wednesday at spring training about his status.

Conforto, who suffered a grade 1 oblique strain on Saturday when he twisted his body to make a catch in right field while shielding his eyes from the sun, said that while there's currently no timetable for his return, he already feels better.

"Definitely feel better than a couple of days ago," Conforto said. "My symptoms weren't all that crazy. After a couple of days of treatment, I felt quite a bit better. So right now I feel pretty good."

A scenario where the middle of the Mets' lineup does not feature Michael Conforto is not one the team wants to think about, but it's one they're possibly facing now that Conforto's status is in doubt due to a side injury he suffered on Saturday.

Conforto, who has returned to New York for further evaluation after receiving an MRI in Port St. Lucie, will hope for good news. But even if the news is good, it's fair to believe his status for Opening Day (on March 26) and beyond could be in doubt.

Fortunately for the Mets, Conforto is the only key player who is currently dealing with a new injury. And unless his absence is months-long, they should be able to withstand it.

If Dominic Smith were to be completely honest, he might say that he was hoping to get traded over the winter.

After all, even after something of a breakthrough season with the bat in 2019, his playing time is blocked every which way as a Met, with Pete Alonso at first base and a crowded outfield that might once again include Yoenis Cespedes

But Smith offered no hint of any such desire when I spoke to him last week in Port St. Lucie, and good for him for trying to make the best of what could be a frustrating situation.

J.D. Davis will return to the Mets' lineup on Sunday, manager Luis Rojas announced after Saturday's spring training loss to the Nationals.

Davis, who Rojas said will get the nod out in left field against the Astros, hasn't played for the Mets since injuring his shoulder on Feb. 25 in a game against the Tigers. He jammed his shoulder while diving for a ball, but the MRI revealed there was no new damage to the area.

Mets OF/3B J.D. Davis, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury, took batting practice on Tuesday and said he expects to be ready for Opening Day.

"Yeah, I feel like I'm ready enough to be ready for Opening Day and everything," Davis said. "I have no setbacks or anything right now. So feeling good, feeling strong. All the strength is there, all the range of motion is there. It's just easing it back in and I think the next thing is just live ABs, hit off the machine and maybe work on diving back to the bag and sliding. But, other than that, we're looking good right now."

Davis jammed his shoulder last week when he dove for a ball at third base, and has been rehabbing since the day after the injury -- first doing non-baseball work and then resuming baseball activity.

J.D. Davis, who is ahead of schedule as he works his way back from a shoulder injury, has been hitting in the batting cage for the last few days, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reported on Tuesday.

Davis suffered the injury last Tuesday when he dove for a ball at third base, and had an MRI the next day.

"It sounds like we're in a pretty good spot with it overall," Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said last week, noting that the MRI revealed what looked like an old labrum injury but no new damage.

NorthJersey.com's Justin Toscano reported late last week that Davis -- who began rehabbing the day after suffering the injury -- was taking ground balls in the outfield, playing catch, and working on one-arm swings with his right hand.

Mets outfielder Michael Conforto enters the 2020 season at 27 years old in what is his second-to-last year of arbitration. If an extension isn't reached before the end of the 2021 season, Conforto will be a free agent. And the Mets shouldn't let things get to that point.

Conforto, whose breakout season in 2017 (.279/.384/.555) ended after 109 games due to a shoulder injury that required surgery and negatively impacted his start to the 2018 season, has been tagged as "too streaky" by some and seemingly disappointed others who think his career batting average (a stat that doesn't matter nearly as much as it used to) is too low.

While the "streakiness" thing is debatable since every hitter is streaky to an extent (scope out Mike Trout and Christian Yelich's month-by-month breakdowns), here's what we know Conforto is:

The Yankees have contacted the Mets about potentially trading for Steven Matz, and the Mets are reportedly willing to listen.

But while the Mets have what looks to be a good problem right now with six starting pitchers for five rotation spots, they would be wise to hold on to Matz.

According to the New York Post, the Mets would want a big league player back from the Yanks for Matz, with the Post citing Miguel Andujar as their potential ask.

The Yankees' starting rotation is already reeling ahead of Opening Day, with Luis Severino (Tommy John surgery) out for the season and James Paxton (back surgery to remove cyst) absent for the start of the 2020 season. Because of that, GM Brian Cashman is already looking to discuss trades with teams to add another rotation piece.

According to The Post's Ken Davidoff and Mike Puma, the Yankees have contacted the Mets about potentially trading for LHP Steven Matz, and the Mets are "willing to listen."

However, SNY's Andy Martino is saying not to hold your breath, as multiple sources are telling him "there is no reason to think it will progress or that anything will happen there."

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen gave everyone a big sigh of relief when he said last Wednesday that J.D. Davis' shoulder injury was nothing to worry about.

And Davis' work on Sunday in Port St. Lucie proves that.

Van Wagenen said that Davis' injury, which came from diving for a grounder in a spring training game last Tuesday, would have him sit out of any baseball activity for a week before being re-evaluated. Mets INF/OF J.D. Davis had an MRI on his injured left shoulder that did not reveal "a ton of inflammation" or "new structural damage," and will begin rehabbing on Wednesday, GM Brodie Van Wagenen said.

After a couple lopsided innings, the Mets fell to the Tigers, 9-6, in Lakeland, Fla. on Tuesday. >> Box Score

5 things to know from Tuesday's game...

1) Michael Wacha got his first start of the spring, and pitched well in his two innings on the rubber. He allowed one hit and two walks, but struck out two and didn't allow a run over that span. The radar gun had him topping out around 96 mph, which he said after the game is a "good sign."

Mets INF/OF J.D. Davis left Tuesday's spring training game against the Tigers in the fifth inning after diving for a ball at third base.

Afterward, Davis stayed down for a few minutes before getting up and departing the game.

Davis was evaluated after the game and initial tests said there was nothing wrong, but an MRI on Wednesday will confirm that.

When the offseason began, the thought of Yoenis Cespedes contributing to the 2020 Mets was a pipe dream. Then, he started hitting bombs. Then, his contract was restructured to incentivize him making it back on the field. Then, he started running.

It will be Michael Wacha getting the start as the Mets face Tigers in Lakeland, Fla. on Tuesday at 1:05 p.m.

While Wacha is thought to be in competition with Steven Matz for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, it might not be that simple

Mets notes

Andres Gimenez, Jake Marisnick, and J.D. Davis are the highlights of the lineup with the Mets traveling to Lakeland. Notable is that Davis, who has been getting lots of reps at third base this spring, is back at the hot corner.

The following are insights, ideas and notes gathered from recent conversations with team sources, rival executives, reporters, front office assistants, and talent evaluators...

Based on conversations with team insiders, at this early point in the spring, it sounds to me like Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil will 100 percent be kicking off Luis Rojas' lineup in April.

After that, expect Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto and some flip-flopping between Wilson Ramos and Robinson Cano. Amed Rosario seems destine to hit eighth or maybe even ninth on certain occasions, while the J.D. Davis/Yoenis Cespedes situation will impact left field and the heart of the lineup in a way that can't be known yet.

J.D. Davis had a breakout 2019 season in his first year with the Mets, batting .307 with 22 home runs in 140 games. The Mets acquired him from the Houston Astros on Jan. 6, 2019 after he played just 66 games in two seasons with the team.

Davis spoke to SNY's Steve Gelbs on Sunday during the Mets' 3-3 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals about how he was a different person before coming to New York.

"Me, learning from how I was with the Astros, and my personality, I was kind of the quiet guy," Davis said. "I was a fly on the wall. I tried to blend in, not have any attention towards myself. Coming in here, I wasn't as happy as I was with the Astros. I wasn't really expressing myself. I remember just coming in and being free and loose, and just wanting to at least have a relationship with these guys. And these guys have the same kind of desire as well.

Both teams struggled offensively as the Mets lost 2-0 on Saturday in a split-squad contest against the Cardinals. >> Box score

4 things to know from Saturday's game...

1) Marcus Stroman got the ball and pitched a solid first inning, allowing a hit but striking out both Paul Goldschmidt and Yadier Molina. But Tyler O'Neill led off the second with a home run to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Stroman got Tommy Edman to ground out on a comebacker, but after a walk and a single, Stroman's day was done after 1 1/3 innings pitched.
