1.) Nothing has changed as far as Geno Smith's status, and Smith is still expected to miss four games.
2.) The Jets are not planning to add another QB, and Bryce Petty will remain the backup until Smith returns.
3.) Jeremy Kerley, Lorenzo Mauldin, Erin Henderson, and Calvin Pace are all expected to be ready for Week 1.
4.) It's not likely that Devin Smith will play Week 1.
5.) Bowles wants Rontez Miles to be back on the practice squad.
It's good that Geno Smith is coming back to the field, but then the team's willingness to risk using Bryce Petty as an emergency quarterback for the first month of the season should Fitzpatrick get injured is a little scary. It could be that Geno's recovery is in fact going quicker than expected and Bowles isn't letting on yet, or that they really do feel confident in how Bryce Petty is picking up the playbook, OR it could be that they are only going to risk this situation for Week 1 and will re-sign Flynn or Johnson after the first week of the season to save themselves some salary cap space.
It's good to see that list of players will be ready for Week 1 ... but in the case of Jeremy Kerley ... ready for what?
Interesting that Devin Smith won't be ready Week 1, but I would have to imagine that Smith is close if all Bowles wouldn't commit to is Week 1.
I'm sure that Bowles does want Miles to be back on the practice squad. Maybe it's not fair to Bowles and Maccagnan, who are only here in their first year, but if I am Miles and his agent, I am pounding the phones to see if there's another team who could use Miles' services. It's been long enough that the Jets has jerked him around. Cleveland, Buffalo and Kansas City all make sense as he has some ties to folks in those organizations -- as do San Francisco and Washington on special teams.
