The 2020 NFL Draft was unlike any that we've ever seen before. Conducted remotely, every team faced challenges in processes leading up to the big weekend and during that draft itself that required quick thinking, and more importantly, trusting your gut.
That's exactly what GM Joe Douglas and the rest of the Jets staff did, as Douglas put together a fine draft class. How did he get to this point in his first ever draft at the helm?
Well, in the first episode of One Jets Drive, full access was given -- or as much as was allowed due to the coronavirus pandemic -- leading up to draft day. Douglas, head coach Adam Gase, and many others gave their analysis of the Jets' picks. Take first-round pick Mekhi Becton for instance.
"I think the first game I watched was the Notre Dame game and you just see this hulking left tackle that moves so easy and he's able to just snap defenders' heads back every time he hits them," Douglas said. "He lifts guys off into uncomfortable positions, putting guys in the ground. It's eye-opening."
Becton, of course, stunned everyone at the NFL Scouting Combine when he ran a 5.11 40-yard dash. At 6-foot-7, 364 pounds, that was unheard of.
The video shows a snippet of Becton's interview with the Jets as well, and he clearly made a great impression on Douglas and the rest who were present there to call his name with that No. 11 overall pick.
"You knew he was a good athlete from watching the tape," Douglas added. "You knew he could slide his feet, you knew he could mirror edge rushers in pass [protection]. When you saw the 40, it just confirmed everything you saw on tape: This is a big, athletic man."
