With Geno Smith suffering a season-ending injury and starter Ryan Fitzpatrick performing at an inconsistent level, while nursing a knee injury of his own, it could soon be Bryce Petty's time under center for the Jets.
While serving as the second- and third-string quarterback this season, Petty has continued to keep the same mindset in his preparation all year.
"For me, my game plan hasn't changed. It really hasn't changed since I got here,' said Petty to SNY's Jeane Coakley. "Last year I prepared like I was the starter and if that opportunity presents itself than you're ready.
"I think that's where guys get in trouble; when they're not prepared. I'm going to continue to do what I've done, understand what my role is and if and when that opportunity comes (to play) I'll be ready."
While head coach Todd Bowles insisted this week there is no quarterback controversy with his team, the writing is on the wall for everyone else to see. With the Jets off to a rocky first half to their season and any real thought of playoff contention slipping by the week, it might be time to turn to the future and see what the Jets have in Petty.
Petty saw some action in the Jets' loss to the Dolphins last week. With Fitzpatrick sidelined for a series due to injury, Petty led a field-goal drive after completing 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards.
While the play calls were rather conservative, Petty believes offensive coordinator Chan Gailey put him in the best position to succeed.
"I thought Chan (Gailey) did a great job calling plays and putting me in a comfortable position," Petty said. "That's the biggest thing when you get thrown in there and warming back up on the field, if you will. I thought he did a great job (of calling plays) and it felt good."
Despite not receiving many reps with the first team this season, Petty is embracing his role with the team and prepared to help in whichever way his coaches ask him to.
"You have to understand your role. Right now my role is to help the team in way shape or form," said Petty. "Whether that's as the starter, second string or third string I'm going to do what I'm supposed to do and try to be a good positive teammate every day I come in here and that's all I'm worried about."
