Smith left practice Friday after he collided with S Jaiquawn Jarrett while making a catch (July 31, 8:21 p.m.). He was slow to get up and trainers took him into the locker room.
The Jets said Smith will stay in the hospital overnight as a precautionary measure.
New York picked Smith, who played 15 games with Ohio State last season, in the second round of the draft.
It's tough news. Now, likely one to two months removed from the field, Smith will have to learn from the sidelines. Smith was working extensively with the first team the first two days, so it is clear that the expectation was that he would have a big role in this offense this year. Hopefully he can recover quickly but this presents an opportunity for the likes of Chris Owusu and TJ Graham until Smith can return to the field.
