The New York Islanders left Barclays Center believing the results were not a reflection of their effort through the first two games of the Second Round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

However, on Wednesday night at PNC Arena in Raleigh, the Islanders were not the better team and now face a monumental challenge trailing the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-0.

Teuvo Teravainen scored twice and Sebastian Aho recorded a goal and an assist, as the Hurricanes skated to a 5-2 victory in Game 3. Justin Faulk and Justin Williams also found the back of the net while Curtis McElhinney made 28 saves.

Trotz realistic after 5-2 loss 00:00:51
Barry Trotz is realistic after the 5-2 loss against the Hurricanes. The Isles have a steep hill to climb as the Canes can clinch on Friday.

The Islanders are in a big hole after the Hurricanes handled them in a 5-2 loss on the road to give themselves a 3-0 lead in this Second Round series. >> Box Score

Five takeaways from Wednesday's game...

1) It was the Hurricanes getting on the board first, as Teuvo Teravainen buried it right next to the goal line. But Devon Toews quickly made it a tie game at one apiece with a power play goal. It was the rookie's first Stanley Cup Playoff goal of his career.

Cal Clutterbuck will be a game-time decision for Game 3 in Raleigh, Islanders coach Barry Trotz said Wednesday morning.

The right wing will warm up with the team before the start of the game to determine whether he can go.

According to the New York Post, Clutterbuck was on the ice Wednesday morning with the extras. Michael Dal Colle, who'd likely replace Clutterbuck if the veteran can't play, was also on the ice.

It changed in a matter of moments for the Islanders Sunday afternoon.

The Islanders entered the third period of Game 2 with a one-goal lead, but in the first 65 seconds of the final frame, the game was flipped upside down when the Hurricanes lit the lamp twice and stormed to a 2-1 victory

Warren Foegele wired a wrister from a sharp angle just 17 seconds into the third period, and then former Islander Nino Niederreiter redirected a puck past Robin Lehner 48 seconds later to give the Hurricanes a one-goal advantage they would never relinquish.

"It's pretty simple, we played our game for close to 59 minutes," Islanders captain Anders Lee said. "Credit to them for popping two and holding us at the end."

Despite making quick work of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the opening round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the New York Islanders are taking a long-term approach to their second opponent.

Jordan Staal's overtime goal helped the Carolina Hurricanes grab an early series lead, but the Islanders remain focused on the bigger picture and are planting seeds that will be advantageous as the series goes on.

"When we put the puck down low and are hard on their defense, we kind of think of it as an investment," fourth-line forward Matt Martin said after the 1-0 loss in Game 1. "Over the course of the series, you keep wearing them down."

The Islanders were locked in a scoreless duel that stretched into overtime, but they fell to the Hurricanes at home Friday night, 1-0, in Game 1 of the second round. >> Box score

Five Takeaways from Friday's game

1) Jordan Staal scored the game's only goal 4:04 into overtime to give the Hurricanes the win and hand the Isles their first loss of the postseason. Nino Niederreiter had a bank pass off the end boards around the net to Staal, whose shot went off Robin Lehner's left skate as he was trying to close the post and went in.

After waiting for more than a week, the Islanders finally found out late Wednesday night that they'll play the Hurricanes -- the Bunch of Jerks -- in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. And because Carolina upset Washington in Game 7 on the road, the first road win by a team in the series, the Isles will get home-ice advantage in the second round, with Game 1 in Brooklyn on Friday night.

Will the well-rested Islanders be rusty Friday night having not played since last Tuesday? Or will they be able to pounce on a Hurricanes squad tired and beat up after a grueling seven-game series?

Let's take a look at how the Islanders and Hurricanes match up heading into the second round of the postseason.

Islanders take 2-0 series lead 00:00:40
New York Islanders have taken a 2-0 series lead and are ready to bring all of the momentum from the Nassau Coliseum to Pittsburgh.

The Islanders had every reason to crack after allowing the opening goal following five missed power-play opportunities.

However, it was New York that kept its composure and erased a one-goal deficit en route to a 3-1 victory and commanding 2-0 series lead against Pittsburgh.

The Islanders are supposed to be the inexperienced team after missing the previous two postseasons, but never flinched while facing adversity.

This is everything the Islanders could have hoped for.

They made a charge at the end of the season to secure home-ice advantage in the first round of the NHL playoffs, and they've made it count. They used two third-period goals to take Game 2 from the Penguins Friday night, 3-1, in front of a raucous Coliseum crowd and take a 2-0 series lead into Sunday's Game 3 in Pittsburgh.

The Islanders have their first 2-0 lead in a series since 1983, when they won their fourth straight Stanley Cup.

The opening game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals series between the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins had it all.

It went to overtime, featured three ties, nine penalties -- including a boarding call on the Islanders' Anders Lee that resulted in a potential injury for Penguins defenseman Erik Gudbranson -- and a whole bunch of after-the-whistle pushing and shoving. Meanwhile, the teams traded seven goals, the last of which might remain a viral sensation until the Stanley Cup is hoisted in June.

Anyone ready for a few more of these?

Islanders take Game 1 00:01:15
New York Islanders took the home crowd energy and used it to take an overtime win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Each moment has the potential to become a game-changing event in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, and all teams are searching for an opportunity to build momentum. Every shift gets magnified, every faceoff becomes more critical. Special teams can become an enormous sense of confidence, or have a negative impact on a team that grows with each failed opportunity.

In Game 1 of the Islanders' first-round series against the Penguins, New York managed emotions and overcame two critical moments which could have gotten the best of even the mentally toughest teams.

Tom Kuhnhackl lit the lamp just 33 seconds into the game and sent the Nassau Coliseum crowd into a frenzy. However, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan challenged for offside and the goal was disallowed.

With the Coliseum packed to the ceiling, the Islanders looked to get on the board first in the opening minute. However, the goal was called back as an Isles player was deemed offside. But less than a minute later, Jordan Eberle potted the first goal of the night.

Phil Kessel would tie the game up for the Penguins later in the period, but the Isles skated into the locker room with the lead after one thanks to a power play goal by Brock Nelson.  >> Box Score

Coming off arguably their worst loss of the season, the New York Islanders will face another tough challenge when they visit the playoff-hungry Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.

The Islanders (42-24-7, 91 points) were shut out on home ice on Tuesday, suffering a 5-0 loss to the Bruins. New York managed only a season-low 13 shots in the game.

The defeat dropped New York two points behind the Capitals for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and also narrowed the gap between the Islanders and the Penguins (89 points), Hurricanes (87) and Blue Jackets (84).

Three months ago almost every NHL preview did not have the Rangers and Islanders as two teams that would be fighting for the lead in the Metropolitan Division, but as we approach their first matchup Thursday night, it appears that neither team read, watched or listened those predictions -- the Isles and Rangers are tied for second place with 20 points, trailing only the Columbus Blue Jackets by two points for the division lead.

Both teams have taken very different paths to get to this point.

Let's start with the Islanders, who appear to have moved on from losing former captain John Tavares. The stability that Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz have brought to the organization cannot be quantified. While this team is not the most talented, it does not get outworked, plays a much better defensive structure and is keeping the puck out of its own net. Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner have provided stability between the pipes and the duo of Josh Bailey and Anders Lee have proven that they are not a product of their former captain...

The Islanders announced Thursday that Anders Lee has been named team captain, becoming the 15th captain in franchise history.

Lee replaces John Tavares, who left for the Maple Leafs as a free agent during the offseason.

"It's extremely humbling, quite an honor to be a captain of this organization," Lee said. "It's definitely one of the most special things that's happened in my hockey career."

Islanders Josh Bailey and Johnny Boychuk are sick of hearing the team doesn't have any hope next season. And more importantly, those who believe the team will lack leadership with the exit of captain John Tavares, must think again.

These two Islanders veterans find themselves in position to take the torch, if you will, from Tavares and lead the pack. These past five seasons have been Tavares' team, but now, it is up to the collective group to work together.

Tavares may be gone, but that doesn't mean the Islanders should be deemed out of the running already.

Islanders RW Jordan Eberle couldn't help himself. He wanted to continue playing with his linemates.

Eberle traveled to Denmark to join Team Canada in the IIHF World Championship, and playing on the same line with Islanders LW Anthony Beauvillier and C Mathew Barzal again was the main reason why. Eberle had his best season in three years with that line, posting 59 points (25 goals, 34 assists) over 81 games.

"Ebs went all the way to Europe just to play with us two goofs again," Beauvillier told NHL.com's Cory Wright. "We were kidding around, but he's probably a little sick of us now."

Islanders RW Josh Bailey has been added to Team Canada's roster for the IIHF World Championship in Denmark, marking World Championship of his career.

Bailey is replacing Blues rookie D Vince Dunn, who is suffering from an upper-body injury.

The 28-year-old forward had a career year with the Isles this season, posting a career-high 71 points on 18 goals and 53 assists over 76 games.

Thomas Greiss will be the Islanders' starting goaltender for Tuesday's matchup against the Flyers, head coach Doug Weight said.

Also, Cal Clutterbuck and Josh Bailey return to the lineup, replacing Brandon Davidson and Dennis Seidenberg out. Bailey has been out the past two games with an upper body injury. On the other hand, Clutterbuck's injury after leaving Saturday's game was undisclosed. He didn't practice on Monday, but he will be good to go tonight.

The Islanders have just three games to go in their 2017-18 campaign, with the Rangers on Thursday and Red Wings on Saturday as well.

The Islanders lost their seventh straight game Monday night, and head coach Doug Weight says, "It's getting old."

New York did secure a point after forcing overtime late in the third period, but that meant nothing to a team trying to snap out of their current skid.

"We just seem to find ways to lose," captain John Tavares told Newsday's Neil Best.

When the Islanders announced Josh Bailey's new six-year contract on Friday, Garth Snow was letting you know it was okay to hit the snooze alarm on trade deadline day. His trade for depth defenseman Brandon Davidson on Saturday, and flip of Jason Chimera for fourth-liner Chris Wagner today were "Moves So Snow," he should get the concept trademarked.

Snow has known for three months that his team, talented at the very top, but with significant holes everywhere else, needed improvements. We now know, because Snow told us in a recent interview so loony you'd think it was conducted at BK Sweeney's, that he regarded the season-ending injury suffered by defenseman Calvin de Haan in December as a devastating blow to his club.

Yet Snow did what he's always done best since 2006 - little, while offering excuses.

The Islanders announced they signed Josh Bailey to a six-year extension on Friday with free agency looming.

Bailey's contract will likely have an average annual value of approximately $5 million per season, TSN's Bob McKenzie reported on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Bailey, who will remain with New York through the 2023-24 season, has 15 goals and 47 assists in 58 games this season.

Andrew Battifarano, SNY.tv: Feb. 22 - Going into an offseason of uncertainty, this at least gives the Islanders a little bit of clarity on the top line. Bailey is in the midst of a career-year and is still on pace to finish at over a point-per-game pace. Much-maligned early in his career for not being a big enough factor on the offensive end, Bailey has really solidified himself as a bonafide winger next to John Tavares, earning himself a trip to this year's All-Star Game...

The NHL's annual trade deadline (Monday at 3 p.m. ET) entertains, or pains in some cases, fans around the league with rumors galore of what it would cost to improve your team heading into the home stretch of the 2017-18 season.

The reality of the situation is typically much less dramatic than the chatter leading into it, with the market flooded with more sellers than buyers, prices very expensive and the fluidity of discussions themselves that seem to change by the hour, often leading to nothing getting done at all.

In fact, it could be argued that the biggest deals involving the most stars occur before the trade deadline or way after it, at the entry draft. Since 2010, when 31 trades were executed involving 55 players, there has only been an average of 18 deals with 35 players exchanging teams in the subsequent seven years. And the names are hardly earth-shattering when looking back...

After the Islanders beat the Rangers 3-0 at home, a familiar result as the Isles are 5-0-0 against the Rangers at the Barclay's Center, general manager Garth Snow could breathe a bit easier as fan discontentment has boiled recently.

The Islanders got their first shutout of the season behind Jaroslav Halak's 50 saves and head coach Doug Weight hopes there is more to come from the team who has conceded the most goals in the NHL.

"It's not the be-all-end-all," Weight said, via Anthony Rieber of Newsday. "But yeah, it feels really good for him. I guess it was the first one of the year. We need to build on that..."

The NHL celebrates their best talent from the 2017-18 season this weekend as everyone gets together in Tampa and puts their best foot forward for the fans.

For the New York Islanders, John Tavares and Josh Bailey are enjoying themselves, with Bailey's 17-month old son joining him for this unforgettable memory that will last a lifetime. For the team, they currently sit outside of the playoff picture, one-point behind the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils for one of the two wild-card positions. Three points ahead of the next team in the chase: Carolina Hurricanes.
