Last night, GM Sandy Alderson told the media that the team would 1. outright SS Chin-lung Hu to Buffalo, call up SS Ruben Tejada, 2. activate Pedro Beato from the disabled list and option Ryota Igarashi, and 3. place David Wright on the disabled list Tuesday and recall Nick Evans from Buffalo.

This is all sensible stuff and the best the Mets could do under the circumstances.

More later, but Brad Emaus who was hitting .162/262/.162 in 44 AB, has been DFA'd and Justin Turner, who was hitting .300/.364/.475 in 40 AB in Buffalo was recalled from AAA.

I like it.? I had Turner ranked ahead of Emaus in my organizational Top 41.? I wrote this longish postd about the 2B competition when Castillo was released again making the case for Turner.

Yesterday, in the New York Post Mike Puma wrote that "manager Terry Collins is preparing to name Luis Hernandez the starter at second base."? There were many reasons to be skeptical of this assertion.

First, it ran counter to the Mets' original plan of a four-headed competition between Luis Castillo, Daniel Murphy, Brad Emaus and Justin Turner.

Second, there was zero confirmation of the Post report elsewhere.? In fact, there were a number of direct refutations.? Among them:

All indications point to an open competition for the Mets starting 2nd base job. While Luis Castillo and Daniel Murphy will be in the mix as well, lets look at possibly the options on the minor league side of the competition. Brad Emaus and Justin Turner should both get an opportunity to showcase their talents during spring training.? Let's look at their career minor league numbers, and compare the two.

I was working late last night preparing for some morning meetings today (one had to reschedule), when I noticed that I could pull up the Dominican Winter League on my computer on ESPN3.? Cool.? Even cooler, I tuned in to see Justin Turner have a good at bat.? Down in the count, he fought off a 94 mph fastball foul the other way, took another heater high and away for ball two and then ripped a two-run double into left-center? that briefly gave Escogido a five-run advantage.

However, the Gigantes del Cibao fought back, aided in part by a pop-up into shallow right field that dropped harmlessly over the head of former Met Joaquin Arias, who was playing second.? I thought it was really the right-fielder's ball, but Arias took a funky route back anyway.

In seven games in the DWL, Turner is hitting .333/.375/.400 with two doubles, a walk and five strikeouts.? Remember, the DWL plays somewhere between AA and AAA, so we should expect him to hit.

On Monday, Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com, tweeted that Mets prospect Fernando Martinez would make his winter league debut tonight for the Escogido Lions.? Rojas also shared that Escogido and the Licey Tigers were involved in trade talks for the young Martinez.

Hansel Matthews, of Hoy Digital (a Dominican Newspaper), gives us some details in the trade negotiations between Licey and Escogido.

According to Matthews, Escogido was intent on trading Martinez to Licey on Monday, but when Escogido offered Martinez for the versatile Emilio Bonifacio, Licey rejected the offer.? Escogido representative, Angel Santana then called Licey once again and offered Martinez for rookies Carlos Peguero and Carlos Truinfel (both Seattle Mariner prospects), but Licey rejected the offer once again deeming it to much to give up for Martinez.

The Bisons, at 1-5 in their last six games, have now slipped into third place in the wild card hunt, 4.5 games out of a playoff spot with five games to play.? That's too bad.

So we start with injuries.? Fernando Martinez couldn't go in game two Sunday with a right knee injury while 2B Justin Turner left game one after two pitches and according to Bisons.com "could miss significant time."

According to his post-game comments, Manager Ken Oberkfell first noticed that Martinez was hobbling running out a ground ball and then saw that he wasn't moving well in the outfield.? After game one, when asked, Martinez told the coaching staff that indeed his knee was bothering him.? The 21-year old Martinez is dangerously close to making 2010 a lost year.? In 71 games in AAA he's hitting .253/.317/.455 with 16 doubles and 12 home runs and 17 walks against 65 strikeouts.? He was 3-18 (.167) in his seven MLB games.
