GM Jeff Gorton on deadline moves 00:01:15
New York Rangers GM Jeff Gorton talks the team's strategy at the NHL trade deadline, future of Rangers moving forward and Mats Zuccarello

As expected, the rebuilding Rangers were busy before the NHL trade deadline passed Monday at 3 p.m., trading away Mats Zuccarello on Saturday before dealing Kevin Hayes and Adam McQuaid on Monday.

How did GM Jeff Gorton do? Here's a look at the three trades:

SEND: RW Mats Zuccarello to Dallas
RECEIVE: Conditional 2019 second-round pick, conditional 2020 third-round pick

The second-rounder can become a first-rounder if the Stars advance to the Western Conference Final this spring. The third-rounder can become a first-rounder if Zuccarello re-signs with Dallas. The Rangers retained about 30 percent of Zuccarello's remaining salary, which is essentially irrelevant with respect to evaluating the trade from the Blueshirts' perspective.

This deal seemed to be polarizing among fans, but the fact is the Rangers had to get something for the 31-year-old winger. Yes, he was a good player, a hard worker and a fan favorite. It certainly made Henrik Lundqvist emotional on Sunday, the goaltender fighting back tears and unable to answer a question about his friend being dealt away.

The Rangers continued to trade away some of their assets ahead of the NHL's 3 p.m. deadline on Monday.

After sending Mats Zuccarello to the Dallas Stars this weekend, the Blueshirts announced that they completed a deal with the Winnipeg Jets involving Kevin Hayes

The Rangers traded the 26-year-old center to Winnipeg in exchange for a 2019 first-round pick, Brendan Lemieux and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL draft as part of the deal.

New York Rangers teammates Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello are on the trading block, with the trade deadline coming up on Monday.

The Rangers have two games before then -- Saturday afternoon at home against the New Jersey Devils, and Sunday at the Washington Capitals -- with Hayes and Zuccarello still expected to be in the lineup, for now.

"As I stand here now, guys that are on the roster will be in the lineup until I'm told differently," Rangers coach David Quinn told reporters after Friday's practice. Read More

By bringing in one of the top sports executives ever and the most recent Stanley Cup-winning coach, the Islanders have turned the page on the John Tavares era and approach Monday's NHL trade deadline atop the Metropolitan Division.

But if the Isles' want to make a Stanley Cup run, Lou Lamoriello will have to bring in at least one skilled forward who can score before the NHL trade deadline passes Monday at 3 p.m.

Matt Duchene is no longer an option after Columbus acquired him from Ottawa on Friday. Plenty of good options remain on the market, some who will cost more in assets than others. Here's a look at players who can help the Islanders down the stretch and in the playoffs:

Entering Thursday night's game, the Rangers had not yet taken the precaution of scratching any of their trade chips from the lineup as Monday's NHL trade deadline fast approaches, though they did pull Adam McQuaid during Thursday's first period. They went to such lengths last year when they were on the brink of dealing Rick Nash and Michael Grabner.

Yes, the Rangers will be sellers for the second straight season after issuing their Declaration of Reconstruction last year, a decree to rebuild the roster after years of dealing assets in attempts to make runs at the Stanley Cup. Now the goal is to acquire picks and promising young players.

Here's a look at the Rangers who could be elsewhere by 3 p.m. Monday:

As the Rangers slog through a rebuilding season, they have chips to cash in on once again after last year's eventful trade deadline.

Chief among them is Kevin Hayes, who received only a one-year, $5.175 million deal as a restricted free agent last summer and is set for unrestricted free agency later this year. The ascending 26-year-old center could be a target for the Blue Jackets before Monday's deadline if they fail in their pursuit of Ottawa's Matt Duchene, according to Elliotte Friedman's latest 31 Thoughts column.

While the Sabres enter Friday four points behind Pittsburgh for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers (24-24-8, 56 points) are 11 points back, and trade rumors are starting to surface ahead of the Feb. 25 deadline.

One candidate to be moved is Mats Zuccarello, who of late is forming strong chemistry with Mika Zibanejad.

Zuccarello recorded two assists in Tuesday's 4-3 loss at Winnipeg and has 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in his last 12 games. He also has a multi-point game in six of his last 11 contests and has 24 points (six goals, 18 assists) in his last 25 contests.

New York Rangers center Kevin Hayes discusses his how he feels after returning from injury and how the team can't afford any more losses.

Rangers C Kevin Hayes has been rehabbing from an injury since the beginning of the month, but he finally made his way back to the ice against the Flyers on Tuesday night. And he couldn't have felt any better.

"I felt pretty good actually," he told SNY's Justine Ward on Wednesday. "I thought the first period I was pretty good, I played with [Jimmy] Ves[ey] pretty much the whole first...Felt good with the puck, my legs felt pretty fresh, so throughout the rest of the game I felt pretty good."

The Rangers, who lost 1-0 to Philly, will look to get back on the winning side against another division opponent in the Devils on Thursday and Hayes looked ahead to playing in yet another chapter of the rivalry...

This was going to be a story about how the New York Rangers were in a rebuild. It was going to be a story about how winning was not going to solve the team's long-term goals.

Well, a funny thing happened along the way: the guys on the ice continue to play well despite some glaring shortcomings. Perhaps the Rangers are following the path of the New York Yankees, who rebuilt quickly over one trade deadline.

The Rangers continued their strong start Monday evening with a 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators in front of the MSG faithful. As we are now past the quarter point of the season, the Blueshirts hold a playoff spot with a 13-10-2 record. There are still over 50 games left in the season, but teams in a playoff spot by Thanksgiving have over a 60 percent chance of making the playoffs.

  • On Kevin Hayes, "he is a game time decision. This is the best that he has felt, we will talk with Rammer and the doctors and see how he feels coming back tonight and make it a game time decision."
  • Is there urgency to get Hayes back, "he will play tonight if he can play. If he can't play and there is a chance that this goes sideways then we won't play him. At the end of the day, if he feels that he is good to go, he definitely helps our team and will play."

Hayes spoke with the media after today's morning skate and said:

  • Status for tonight, "still have to talk to a couple of people and we will make a decision from there."
  • On how he is feeling, "much better, this is the best I have felt since that Vegas trip."
  • Are you ready to go, "yea."
  • Does the urgency of where the team is make an impact, "not too much. We are in a little rut right now but as an athlete, you don't want to put yourself at risk at anytime. When you feel you are ready to play you go back and play."
  • "That is the biggest question. You play when you feel you won't be limited. I felt pretty good out there today. I'll be talking to people pretty soon and have a decision soon."
  • What has been the most difficult, "it sucks not playing, you want to play all 82 games. You want to be part of a team, but we thought we could do some stuff for that second game back from Vegas and it just didn't go well. You never want to be watching from above when you think you can help that team and hopefully I will get that chance."

All three of Jimmy Vesey, Kevin Hayes and Jesper Fast scored for the Rangers on Saturday against the Predators.

From the Rangers Game Preview for tonight's game against San Jose, "over the last two contests, each of the three players has posted a plus-four rating or better (Hayes - plus-five; Vesey - plus-four; Fast - plus-four), and each player has also registered at least two points (Hayes - two goals, one assist; Vesey - one goal, one assist; Fast - one goal, one assist)."

Alain Vigneault said last week that the trio is a "hard working line" where Fast and Vesey get in on the forecheck and create turnovers and that Hayes complements them well.

Kevin Hayes was named the number one star and awarded the Broadway Hat after today's win over Nashville.

Hayes spoke after the game on MSG and said:

  • On his line, "the last few games we have been good, we try to keep it simple in the D zone and don't cheat. If we play good D we can generate some offense and tonight I thought we did that."
  • On Vesey and Fast, "those two guys, you know what you are going to get. They are honest players, work hard and don't mind hitting guys. When they are getting on the D like that it generates a lot of open space and tonight we could have buried a lot more chances, we had good possession in the offensive zone."
  • On his goal, "I got some speed and their D was standing flat footed, it's not often that I beat guys wide but tonight it happened and luckily it went in."
  • On the win, "it's big. We have been struggling and to play 60 minutes and get two points in front of our fans, hopefully it's a spring board to a lot of other things."
