Mackenzie Skapski says that he is feeling the best he has since undergoing hip surgery last summer. (NHL.com)

Skapski underwent hip surgery in June 2015 and missed the start of last season.

He noted that last season was tough and that he went to the Rangers prospect development camp to show the organization that he is back to where he was before surgery. (NHL.com)

Mackenzie Skapski stopped all 20 shots that he faced last night to record his second career win and first career shutout.

Skapski is currently in the middle of a shutout streak of 119:46 and is the youngest Rangers goalie since Dan Blackburn in 2002 to record a shutout.

  • His first start was a good way to get a taste of the "unexpected"
  • He improves in practice just by being around the Rangers shooters and "everyday I feel that I am getting better...and hopefully that builds into the next game."
  • On Benoit Allaire and Cam Talbot, "I keep going back to those guys and practice, they are huge. Cam jokes around with me and gives me some really good advice and he is someone that I can really talk to and same with Benny. They are a big part of my development right now."

The Rangers have two sets of back to back games next week, starting with the Islanders on Tuesday and Capitals on Wednesday and the Sabres on 14th and Panthers on the 15th.

In appearing in and picking up his first career NHL win last night, Mackenzie Skapski accomplished the following things (via the Rangers game notes and Hockey Reference):

  • Became the first Rangers goalie to win his NHL debut since Dan Cloutier on January 3, 1998.

  • Cloutier relieved Mike Richter 6:18 in to the game after Richter gave up 2 goals on 4 shots. Cloutier stopped all 16 shots he faced and got two goals from Wayne Gretzky and one from Adam Graves to win. (HR)
  • Became the youngest goalie to appear for the Rangers since Chris Holt on 12/3/05

In his NHL debut, Mackenzie Skapski stopped 24 of 25 shots and 24 straight in the final 59:46.

Buffalo scored 14 seconds in when Marc Staal's pass hit Kevin Klein's skate and it was sent to a wide open Matt Moulson.

Staal joked "the hardest one to let in is the first one so we figured we would give him an easier time of it" but added that the goal wasn't his fault and the players told Skapski that they still had confidence in him. (MSG)

  • Anthony Duclair, RW, Team Canada ? Duclair tallied two points (one goal, one assist), including the game-winning goal, in Team Canada?s 5-2 victory over Team Sweden on Dec. 21. Duclair has skated on Team Canada?s top line alongside Sam Reinhart and Max Domi thus far, and the trio created a significant amount of scoring chances in each of Team Canada?s two pre-tournament games.
