Yankees shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said he felt his return to an MLB diamond for a regular-season game was special.

Tulowitzki went 1-for-4 with a double in his first regular-season game since July 2017, more than a year and a half after undergoing double heel surgery, in Thursday's 7-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

"People doubted me that I'd get back to this point, so it definitely had some extra meaning to get back out there and play," Tulowitzki said, according to the New York Post's Peter Botte. "I liked my chances of what I felt in spring, and I'm just happy to go out there and help us win a game."

Many wondered all offseason if the Yankees were going to pony up to sign either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, and CC Sabathia admitted there was a degree of surprise that the Yanks didn't add one of the stars. But ultimately, Sabathia believes the Yanks will be just fine without them.

"A little bit (surprised,) but we didn't need either one of them," Sabathia said on WFAN's CMB program Friday. "We've got a really good right fielder, we've got a really, really good third baseman. So I think we're fine. I think if we needed those guys it'd be a different story, but I think our team is set the way it is. It's good."

The stagnant pace of free agency has sparked talks of a looming labor strike in MLB and some of the Yankees are taking notice.

CC Sabathia, who said on his podcast last month that it was "f---ing nuts" so many free agents were still unsigned, certainly believes it is a strong possibility when the current collective bargaining agreement expires in 2021.

"Just with the way everything has been going, I think," Sabathia said on Friday, per NJ.com. "A lot of players not being signed, good players not being signed. Yeah, I mean, I think that's where players are at right now."

After a long, exhausting free agency, Manny Machado was officially introduced as a member of the San Diego Padres on Friday.

The All-Star infielder was linked to the White Sox, Phillies and Yankees throughout the winter but ultimately settled on the San Diego Padres -- which joined the sweepstakes late -- with a record 10-year, $300 million deal.

Aside from the money, though, Machado also liked the vision that was painted for him by GM A.J. Preller.

San Diego might have been a surprise landing spot for Manny Machado, but the Yankees' decision to pass on the 26-year-old should not have been a shock. Yet, there are fans who will have a hard time letting go of the Yankees' choice.

The Yankees apparently believe they have their third baseman of the future in soon to be 24-year-old Miguel Andujar, who is coming off a second-place finish in the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year balloting. While the point will be made that Andujar will never be the fielder that Machado is at third base, the Yankees youngster doesn't have to be for fans to forget about the newest Padre.

Once SNY's Andy Martino described the Yankees' feelings about Manny Machado as being "lukewarm," everything about the pursuit, or lack thereof, rang true to those beliefs. The Yankees did not believe Machado was a difference maker at his terms and price, shifted gears and never sniffed near his desires.

It's actually easy to debate both sides of the question as to whether the Yankees were right or wrong to pass on Machado. I'll say this, the Yankees might have become better in the short term with Machado aboard, but they will not suffer because he is not. Moreover, failing to sign him will not come back to haunt the club.

It's difficult to take the stance that the Yankees would not have become a better team with Machado manning shortstop or third base. However, it's also cringeworthy to suggest that the Yankees are going to pay the consequences for passing on a 10-year, $300 million deal, knowing all too well how these deals can crumble long before they wind down.

The Yankees' pursuit of Manny Machado has been slow to say the least, as GM Brian Cashman hasn't taken a real leap at the All-Star infielder. However, they have always been in the race for his services next season despite the lack of urgency.

Cashman and the Yankees, though, did discuss numbers with Machado, and former Mets GM Jim Duquette found out what the price range was.

"What I was told here recently was the Yankees' offer -- these aren't out there not necessarily in writing, but hypothetical -- was somewhere in that seven-year, eight-year range for $220 million."

Two of baseball's biggest stars remain free agents with spring training just about to open, but MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is hoping they'll be signed before then.

Just two days after Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he thought the club's 2019 roster was set, owner Hal Steinbrenner left the door ajar for a major acquisition.

As remote as the possibility may be, Steinbrenner on Thursday did not rule out the Yankees adding another marquee player -- such as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado -- before the season begins.

The Marlins can't be serious with this, can they?

That was the vibe coming out of the Mets' suite at the Delano hotel in Las Vegas in December, when they were trying their best to pry star catcher J.T. Realmuto away from a division rival.

When Miami, according to major league sources, indicated an asking price of one or two of Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario plus multiple prospects, the Mets front office was sure that price would come down before long.

To date, there have been no published reports indicating the Mets have interest in or will eventually sign Bryce Harper. However, if things break the right way, I see a way Brodie Van Wagenen can step in and steal him.

Again, based on talks with industry sources, as well as multiple rival executives, here's what I believe to be true as I type this right now...
