Around the System Monday: Goeddel at his Best, Plenty of Hitting
By Toby Hyde | May 3, 2011 | 1:12AM
Russ Adams' two-run homer in the tenth was the difference maker in extra-innings.
Lucas Duda continued his hot streak. He was 3-4 with a bomb and is up to .333/.432/.667 in his last ten games. No, he wasn't a one-year wonder, just off to a slow start in 2011. He'll hit in AAA.
After a pair of hitless games, SS Ruben Tejada (.270/.336/.400) had a pair of hits, but also fanned twice.
Josh Stinson: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K. Not so good.
AA: @ Binghamton Mets 5, Erie Seawolves (DET) 2
Brad Holt (1-1, 2.96) gave up a leadoff homer in the top of the first inning, but steadied himself to work seven good innings and pick up his first win of the year. His final line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR. Despite an ERA under 3, Holt is the owner of some very pedestrian secondary rates with 18 strikeouts against 10 walks (5.9 K/9, 3.29 BB/, 1.8 K/BB).
Jordany Valdespin picked up his first three-hit game of the year to improve to .260/.310/.364. With five hits in his last two games, the 23-year old has raised his batting average by 39 points from .221. It's still early when you can do that.
A+: Jupiter Hammerheads (FLA) 7, @ St. Lucie Mets 5 (12 innings)
Jupiter tied it up with two runs in the ninth against closer Jeffrey Kaplan and won it with two in the 13th against Brandon Sage.
In happier news, the offense had a good night.
RF Cesar Puello (.257/.301/.324) was 3-6 with a double. His three-hit night lifted his batting average 15 points. It's still early.
CF Matt den Dekker (.373/.404/.608) was 2-5 with a triple, his fourth of the year and a walk, his fifth of the year.  He's hit safely in 15 of 16 games.
Jefry Marte (pictured) was 2-5 with a double. The 19-year old's .323/.396/.548 start has absolutely been one of the most pleasant surprises in the system in the first month of the season.
A: Savannah Sand Gnats 3, @ Lakewood BlueClaws (PHI) 1
The streaky Gnats have now won three in a row after losing seven straight. This one was all about the best start of the year for Erik Goeddel who struck out a career-high nine to earn his first professional win. He walked only one and gave up three hits in six innings.  The Lakewood radio broadcast consistently praised his curveball as his put-away pitch.  Once he reached two strikes, the BlueClaws hitters just couldn't cope with the hook.
C Blake Forsythe (.197/.250/.409) was 2-4 and drove home the first Gnats run with a double. On the defensive side, he was charged with his fourth passed ball and the BlueClaws stole two bases against him.
