The Mets announced on Saturday that they are skipping lefthander Jason Vargas' next start in the rotation and will pitch Jacob deGrom in his spot on Tuesday against the Twins followed by Noah Syndergaard on Wednesday.
By skipping Vargas it lines up deGrom and Syndergaard to continue to pitch on five days' rest -- one more day than usual -- for the first month of the season as they have several off-days built into the schedule in April.
DeGrom has continued to look like his Cy Young Award self through his first two starts of the season thus far, allowing eight hits and no runs while striking out 24 in 13 innings pitched.
Vargas, 36, pitched fine in his first start of the season against the Marlins on April 2, allowing just two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings of work.
He will most likely return to the mound next Saturday against the Braves.
