Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has reportedly ended an agreement with investment bank Evercore Partners to explore a potential sale of the team (Rovell, March 10).

Prokhorov began looking into a deal soon after Steve Ballmer bought the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 billion. Forbes magazine estimated the Nets are worth $1.5 billion. Prokhorov bought them for $200 million in 2010.

Prokhorov owns 80 percent of the team and 45 percent of the Barclays Center, which reportedly is not meeting revenue estimates according to blogger Norman Oder.

In light of Thanksgiving, the Nets franchise has three things to be thankful for this holiday season. The Nets are thankful to have a new home in Brooklyn, have Deron Williams on board as the face of the franchise, and have an ownership group that has improved the team?s talent on the court and marketability off the court.

When the Nets moved to Brooklyn the dynamic of the franchise improved significantly for the better. Brooklyn has wanted a professional sports team since the Dodgers left the borough in 1957.

"And after purchasing the Nets for $200 million three years ago, his investment is expected to skyrocket in value with the team moving to Brooklyn. Prokhorov has estimated the franchise will be worth $1 billion in 2015 (even though he'll likely be faced with stiff luxury tax penalties, considering he handed out over $300 million in contracts this offseason alone)."

$1 Billion? Someone, cue Dr. Evil. While the sky is the limit for the Brooklyn Nets franchise, at the end of the day, the true value of the franchise will be determined by how many games they win and how many people are tuning in to watch their games on television.

But as the?aforementioned?Daily News article hints, at the very least, Prokhorov's prediction shows some confidence and you'd hope that he'd be somewhat confident considering each member of his team's starting-five will be making about $10 million this season.
