Instead of using their pick at No. 27 overall, the Nets traded away their selection to the Clippers.
Brooklyn selected for Los Angeles, taking Florida State C Mfiondu Kabangele. In exchange, the Nets will receive the Clippers' No. 56 overall pick in this draft as well as their 2020 first-round via the 76ers, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
Why would the Nets trade away their pick, especially with a player like Bol Bol still on the board? Cap space.
By moving down in the draft, the Nets save about $2 million in cap space they are hoping to use in free agency this offseason. Players like Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant have been linked to Brooklyn.
Now there was a report from The Post's Brian Lewis that the Nets were unsure of adding Irving if Durant wasn't a part of the picture. They're looking for a package, and all the money they can get will certainly help.
The Nets still have the No. 31 pick as well as the No. 56 to choose from tonight.
