The 24-year-old Klinin spent the last five seasons with Avangard Omsk (KHL). Last year he had 12 goals, 13 assists, 25 points, 49 penalty minutes and 58 games played, all of which were career-highs. In 213 career KHL games, he scored 31 goals and 38 assists for 69 points. He also served as team captain last season.

Klinin represented Russia at the 2011 and 2014 World Championships where he won a Gold Medal in both tournaments.

Kujawinski, 20, played last season with North Bay (OHL). In 34 games he scored?21 goals and recorded 15 assists for 36 points. He was New Jersey?s second choice (third round), and 73rd overall selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Pietila, 22, played four years of college for Michigan Tech (WCHA). Over the course of his college career he?scored 46 goals and had 60 assists for 106 points to go along with 230 penalty minutes in 153 games. He was New Jersey?s fourth choice (fifth round), and 129th overall selection in the 2011 draft.

DeBoer served as the Devils head coach from 2011-2014, leading them to a Stanley Cup finals appearance in 2012. He was fired just 36 games into this season after a?12?17?7 start. Adam Oates and Scott Stevens replaced him on the bench for the remainder of the season in a duel-coaching set up.

Prior to coming to?the Devils, DeBoer coached the Florida Panthers from 2008-2011. He has a 205-183-70 lifetime record as a head coach.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak and ended a streak where the Islanders failed to tally more than one goal in each of their previous four?games.

"It's a good win. It's good for the guys," Jack Capuano said. "It's another game. It's good to get rewarded. I thought we've played extremely well. We've actually dominated some of the games that we lost and we have a tough stretch coming up with Minnesota... I'm glad we came in here, we were structured and I thought they executed the game plan with what needed to be done against a structured Devils team."

?I felt pretty comfortable out there,? Severson said. ?I think that's the main thing with me as a player and as a person, just being confident on and off the ice and just doing my thing no matter what. The coaches put their trust in me and the management put their trust in me to put me right back in the fire and I just tried to do my thing out there and have some fun.?

Severson, who missed time with a fractured left ankle, ended the night playing 16:21 in the Devils 3-1 victory?over the Predators while posting two shots on goal. Interim coach Lou Lamoriello was happy with the rookie's return performance.

The team posted 30-plus shots for the first time in 10 games, but it came down to Scott Gomez, who netted the deciding goal in the shootout.

?We had 20 (scoring) chances,? said Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello. ?The first thing you look at is chances to score and chances against. We had plenty of opportunities and that's all you can ask for. The win, I was pleased with the way we did a lot of things tonight: the penalty kill and the power play had a lot of good looks and 5-on-5 we were creating chances. We just have to put them in the net.?

Gionta is unsure if he'll suit up for Tuesday night's game against Buffalo, but it hasn't been ruled out.

?We'll see how he is. We're not sure yet,? interim coach Lou Lamoriello said Monday. ?We'll just see how he feels. We won't know that until tomorrow.?

The Islanders' captain scored the tying and game winning goal in a game that had the visitors playing out of their skates. Tavares went behind the net, picked Adam Larsson's pocket, made his way to the front of the net and ?put the puck behind Keith Kinkaid . The 3-2 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils snapped a two-game skid.

For good measure, Tavares celebrated the goal by throwing his hands up and down in the air in homage to the recognizable "Yes! Yes! Yes" chants?that has become synonymous with the Islanders' fan base.

Fraser adds some much needed depth to the position with Eric Gelinas being ill and Peter Harrold going?down with an injury in last night's game against the Canadiens. Harrold was the victim of a high stick and is possibly suffering from a concussion.

?Mark has experience. He has the most NHL experience down there and he?s been playing very well. That worked out, so he?ll get a chance.??GM/coach Lou Lamoriello said.

Mumps is extremely contagious, according to the Center for Disease Control. Symptoms include?fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite, as well as swelling of salivary glands.

The illness was a topic of discussion as the Devils visited Nassau Coliseum on Monday and word spread that Penguins forward Beau Bennett could be the latest player to catch mumps. Ranger forward Derick Brassard was confirmed to have mumps on Sunday. (Update: The AP reported Tuesday the Islanders have postponed their annual holiday trips to local hospitals as a precautionary measure).

On Saturday, a timely power play goal by Kyle Okposo evened the score at two between the Chicago Blackhawks and Islanders. On Monday, with the Islanders and New Jersey Devils tied at two, the penalty kill unit killed off a retaliatory slashing penalty called on John Tavares at 18:11 in the third period.

It allowed the Islanders to get to overtime and eventually beat the Devils 3-2 in the shootout.

The future Hall of Famer has visited Nassau Coliseum on many occasions, but only ever wearing the red and black of the New Jersey Devils. On Saturday afternoon Brodeur made his first appearance with the St. Louis Blues and helped propel them to a 6-4 win over the Islanders.

Brodeur came into the game in the second period after Jake Allen allowed three goals in the opening 20 minutes. The newest member of the Blues made 14 saves and allowed only one goal in relief.

However, as the Islander players and coaches continuously say, ?this is a different team. Despite being down two men with 2:04 left in the game, and ahead 2-1, the Isles held on to defeat the Devils. The victory was their 17th of the season and 11th of the month.

The Islanders didn't make it easy on themselves in the third period. After outshooting the Devils 26-19 through the first forty minutes and playing competitive hockey game, the Isles allowed New Jersey to swarm them in the final period. New Jersey peppered Jaroslav Halak with 16 shots in the third, while they only recorded two.

Need to Know:?After giving up one in the first, Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves on the night to keep the Isles on top.

Nearly 12,000 people showed up to Barclays Center for preseason hockey. The Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in the shootout and fans finally had the chance to hear the goal horn at Barclays Center.

?Well it?s nice to score a goal,? Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano told reporters after the game. ?Last year we never heard the horn go off. Didn?t even know what it was going to be like.?

The game is the second NHL contest held at the Brooklyn venue, which will be the Islanders new home after this season. Chris King and Butch Goring will be the broadcast team for the night. King will return to the television booth for the first time since a short stint last season filling in for Howie Rose.

It will be the first time fans will see how a hockey game will look on TV from the Barclays Center. The arena?received mixed reviews from fans after the initial preseason contest there last season, in which the Islanders lost 3-0 to New Jersey. Some fans were unhappy with the view from different sections of the arena while others did not like that the?scoreboard was off-center.

The Devils sent four players to Sochi, with Jaromir Jagr, Patrik Elias and Marek Zidlicky representing the Czech Republic and Damien Brunner representing the Swiss.

While the host country, Russia, s one of the favorites, the Canadian team is loaded. Of the 12 teams in the field, there are at least six teams that can make a pretty good case as to why they'll take home the gold medal.

The Devils were shut out for the sixth time while Cory Schneider has been in net. ?He?s held opponents to two-goals-or-less in 13 of his last 14 starts.

In his 31 games since being promoted to the main roster on November 3, Jon has been the most consistent and reliable of any of the vaunted Devils call-ups. After a few early blunders and turnovers during his pairing with Gelinas, which lead to the two rookies being split-up, Merrill's defensive game has continued to progress to a legitimate, NHL level.

In spite of his youth, the 22-year-old rookie from the University of Michigan?plays a smart, confident, hard-working game. He blocks shots, makes the right passes, isn't afraid of contact and doesn't shy away from the hard work in the corners. ?He also shows very strong stick skills for someone so young, and is consistently able to disrupt the opponent's play with a timely poke-check or blocked pass that sends the play the other way. This is made all the more impressive when you consider the fact that Merrill had only 26 games of experience at the AHL level to call upon before being thrust onto the big stage.

With the New York Yankees'?farewell tour for Mariano Rivera?fresh in our minds, it's easy to have wanted the same thing for Martin Brodeur. If this is, in fact, Brodeur's final season, it seems like he may be down to his last few starts. With Cory Schneider establishing himself as the No. 1 goalie of late, there may not be much more of No. 30 between the pipes and that's OK.

We constantly try to humanize sports and make it about the individuals, but at the end of the day, it's a business. It's no knock on Brodeur to admit that the better goaltender is in net right now.

Finally, there's at least a solution. ?Gelinas playing a handful of minutes a night was helping no one. ?It's a waste of his time and the coaching staff's time if they're not going to play him.

I know there are many who feel like the sky is falling, but there's no need for that. ?Gelinas will play for the Devils again. ?He will even play seasons for the Devils soon enough. ?Now is just not the time, for better or worse.

Let's start with the things that frustrate Devils fans: Is the Eric Gelinas benching/scratching/sitting annoying? Yes. Is the shunning of Adam Larsson frustrating? No question. Do people get on him about having optional skates/days off? They sure do.

But what is really important? The bottom line for an NHL coach is to win hockey games. He's done exactly that since arriving a few years ago.

[sny-box]- Alex Steen is having the season of a lifetime. Tonight he netted his 27th of the year on a wrister from Jaden Schwartz and David Backes in the first. As it would turn out, that goal was also the game winner.

- The dominant Blues power play that the Devils stoned last time came through in a big way tonight, with Brendan Morrow deflecting a shot from Jay Bouwmeester to break the Devils midway through the third period. On the other side of the ice, the Devils went 0/4 on their power play opportunities.

The sights were incredible. Gazing upon Yankee Stadium decked out in NHL logos was quite a sight. There was a buzz even before you entered the stadium. With media crews working to get fan interviews and photos, it was clear that this event was so, so much more than just a regular game.

The Atmosphere

Sure, the Devils lost a chance to pull even with the Rangers in the standings, but losing those two points doesn't yet spell disaster.

In the coming weeks, the Devils will need to address what is a hole at first line left wing. Whether it's moving someone like Dainius Zubrus back to the first line and sliding someone Steve Bernier onto the line with Patrik Elias, the lack of another scorer on that top line is an issue that the Devils will have to tackle.

It has been announced that Martin Brodeur will be between the pipes for Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium.

The way Cory Schneider has been playing of late, from a sheer numbers standpoint, it would have made sense to give him the nod. Those numbers are exactly why Brodeur should be starting.

The dominant Blues power play was blanked on all three opportunities, while New Jersey caught fire and went 3/4.

Damien Brunner was back at practice today. ?Brunner has been out since December 20, when he suffered an MCL injury. ?He has missed 14 games with the injury. ?Brunner has eight goals and 13 points in 32 games this season.

Peter Harrold also practiced. ?He had been out with a non-displaced foot fracture. ?He has missed 19 games with the injury, having not played since December 7. ?Harrold has two assists in 21 games.

- The Coyotes struck first with a quick wrist shot from Jordan Szwarz?at 2:35 into the first period.

Martin Brodeur stopped all but one Canadiens' shot. It was like watching paint dry while listening to a presentation about a timeshare.

Mark Fayne, a defenseman, who didn't record a point, was the third star of the game. Taking the SATs is more exciting than that.

Langenbrunner spent eight and a half seasons with the Devils, winning a Stanley Cup with New Jersey and another with the Dallas Stars.

He scored 243 goals, with 420 assists, over his 16-year career.

-?Michael Ryder?made the most of a perfect play and pass from Travis Zajac, snapping it past?Kari Lehtonen to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead midway through the second. ?This was Ryder's 15th goal of the season, and his third straight game lighting the lamp.?

One step forward, one step back.

At some point, the Devils will need to make a move up the standings in the Metropolitan Division. Hanging around all season and perpetuating a pattern of wins and losses while gaining no ground.

This move isn't very surprising, in fact it was a move that seemed like it was bound to happen. With Tedenby being put on non-roster waivers, it not only immediately cleared the roster space for Carter, but it does allow the Devils to stick him in Albany. At this point, it's just a matter of if he gets claimed by any team. If he is not claimed by noon on Saturday, he will be sent to the A-Devils.

At this juncture, it would be a better move for both parties if Tedenby is claimed by another team. The speedy, former first-round draft pick has shown some flashes of strong play, but has been plagued by inconsistency in his career. He never really seemed to fit into the Devils system, which requires both strong forechecking and backchecking.?

2013 may go down as one of the most challenging years in the history of the New Jersey Devils. To recap some of the events:

- There was the season that started not in late 2012, but 2013, after the NHL lockout.? The Devils did so without their captain from the previous season, after Zach Parise departed for Minnesota. The 48-game slate was none to kind to the Devils, as they failed to reach the playoffs just one season after making the Stanley Cup Finals.

- Adam Henrique continued a streak of excellent play with a backhander off of some great passing from Reid Boucher and?Michael Ryder at 11:37 into the first. ?This gave Henrique his second goal in as many games, and eight on the season.

Bryce Salvador is back, Devils fans! ?For more than two months now the Devils have had to carry on without #24, a loss that was felt in the locker room and on the ice. ?Tonight,?after 30 long games, that all changes as the Devils' Captain laces up and returns to the starting lineup.

Fans will be able to see his impact right away in terms of possession and pacing. ?Bryce is a smart and deliberate player, with a way of calming the game down. ?He keeps the puck in the attacking zone on offense and slows down any rush attempts by the other team on defense. ?You won't see him out of position, making an errant pass, or getting caught on a change.
