New York Giants Schedule

Think the Giants have a tough schedule this season? Think again.

Based on 2013 results and the fact they finished third in the NFC East last season, Big Blue has drawn the 26th toughest in the league (119-137, .465).

But that doesn't mean they're in for a cakewalk in 2014, either. They will be playing on national television five times, have games vs the Seahawks and 49ers and will face four of the top six teams selecting atop this year's draft (Houston, St. Louis, Jacksonville and Atlanta).

No matter what happens this Sunday vs the Redskins, the Giants will finish third in the NFC East. That means they will draw a third-place schedule for the 2014 season.

This year the Giants played a second-place schedule, drawing Seattle and Carolina in their at-large games. They were shut out in both.

The scheduled games so far for 2014 are the yearly home-and-home series vs their NFC East division rivals (Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington),?plus games against the NFC West and AFC South. The Giants will play Arizona, San Francisco, Houston and Indianapolis at home and St. Louis, Seattle, Jacksonville and Tennessee away.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin had some observations about his team's schedule this season. Compared to years past, this year's doesn't seem to be as demanding.

But the NFL prides itself on a level playing field. The schedule and the draft reward the failing teams and make it more difficult for the successful teams to sustain their success.

The Giants finished 9-7 last season and have not had sub-.500 finish since Coughlin's first season with the team in 2004. Since then, the Giants have drafted no higher than 15th and have traditionally drawn some of the league's toughest schedules.

The NFL released their full 256-game regular season schedule tonight. The Giants will appear in primetime five times this season, despite not qualifying for the playoffs last year.

Outside of their required home-and-home contests vs their divisional opponents (Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins), the Giants will face the NFC North (Bears, Lions, Vikings, Packers) and the AFC West (Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders).

By virtue of their second-place finish in 2012, the Giants drew the other NFC second-place finishers from last season (Seahawks, Panthers).

Someone asked me to circle the games I thought would be of importance on the Giants 2012 Schedule, which was released last night.

I circled so many, I just decided to circle the whole thing. They play seven games against 2011 playoff teams plus six against their division rivals, who all missed the postseason last year but can never be overlooked. Those games are always hard fought contests.

The way the Eagles were playing at the end of the season, no one wanted to see them in the playoffs. Had they made it instead of, let's say, Atlanta, we could have seen a different picture in the NFC.

Each year, the NFL opens their season with a Thursday night, nationally-televised game between the Super Bowl champion and another league power. This past year, the Green Bay Packers faced off against the previous year's champs - the New Orleans Saints.

The year before, the Saints opened vs the Minnesota Vikings, the team they defeated in the NFC Championship game the previous January. Before that, it was the Steelers hosting the Titans in a slugfest at Heinz Field.

This year, the Giants will be hosting the game. Their schedule is littered with suitable candidates: Green Bay, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and the the three NFC East rivals - Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington.

Why does it feel like every season, the Giants have to deal with the Seahawks and their loud fans?? No matter.? The Giants keep the good times going with an easy win over Pete Carroll's squad.? Eli Manning throws for three touchdowns and Andre Brown scores his first career touchdown in garbage time. ?Pete Carroll rethinks his decision to leave USC as a single Seattle raincloud follows him up and down the sideline.
