In the NFL, the more you win, the harder they make it for you to keep on winning. You slip in the draft order, always have cap issues and are given difficult schedule.

Such is the case with the Giants who, thanks to a decade of winning seasons, have traditionally drawn one of the league's toughest schedules.

One of the residual effects of enduring a losing year is that you draw a less taxing schedule the following season.

The 24-17 win over Washington was not a banner one fantasy-wise for the Giants. They had just 16 first downs and 286 net yards on offense (206 passing, 80 rushing). They were, however, opportunistic and won the ballgame by tightening the screws on defense during the final three quarters.

Player snapshots courtesy of Rotoworld:

Eli Manning completed 22-of-28 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in Sunday night's Week 13 win over the Redskins.Manning started off slow, but was able to find success in the short passing game and had only one turnover. He hit Brandon Myers on a 22-yard pass to tie the game at the end of the first half and led the Giants to a comeback win with 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Through 12 games, Manning has 2,995 yards, 15 touchdowns, and is behind only Geno Smith with 18 interceptions. He'll be just a QB2 option in Week 14 against the Chargers.

It looked like the Giants were going to have one of those games. On their first drive of the game, the Washington Redskins picked apart the Giants defense, knocking more than 7 minutes off the clock and took an early 7-0 lead, with ease. By halftime, the score was tied at 14, but?Robert Griffin III had completed 16 of 17 passes in the first half and it looked like Big Blue's defense had finally given up on a season that is now purely based on pride.

Who knows what was said in visitor's locker room, but whatever it was, it worked. The Giants defense, led by veteran Justin Tuck who bowed inside FedEx Field?four times last night, took over in the second half and held Washington to just 96 yards in the remaining two quarters.

A clutch play by Will Hill to strip Pierre Garcon in the late minutes of the fourth quarter would seal a victory for the Giants, pushing?their record to 5-7, two games behind the division leaders Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, while eliminating the Redskins from any chance of playoff contention.

Back to work today for the Giants. They will practice today out at QDTC in what will be an indoor event given the wet weather.

Not much news today except the roster move placing C Jim Cordle on IR. His roster spot will be filed by Stephen Goodin, who's been a familiar figure here for the past two years or so.

Get ready for a lot of talk and a lot of promises from the Giants this week. It's been just one disappointment after another this season, and even as a member of the media who lives on quotes and news from the team, enough is enough. It's time for this team to play a complete game for the first time this year: win all three phases with no turnovers and blow somebody out. And then shut up about it. Nahhhhh....

The Dallas Cowboys came in here with the league's worst defense and all week the Giants were looking forward to taking full advantage of that fact. We're still waiting. The Giants could only muster two field goals in the first half despite running the ball for 108 yards between Andre Brown and Brandon Jacobs.

Turnovers, which killed the Giants in their first meeting with Dallas, have reared their ugly head again. Victor Cruz was stripped of the ball by Dallas DB Orlando Scandrick. The ball was scooped up by Jeff Heath an taken to the house for a 7-0 Dallas lead.

A 10-play, 74-yard drive that stalled on the Dallas 3. Josh Brown hit a 21-yard FG to narrow the score to 7-3.

For the second straight day, the Giants had all 53 players out on the field and practicing. CB Corey Webster (groin, ankle) will be out tomorrow. RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) and WR Hakeem Nicks (abdomen) are listed as questionable but will likely dress.

RB John Conner (hip), CB Trumaine McBride (hip), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), CB Terrell Thomas (knee) are all probable and are expected to play.

Who would have thought the Giants would start 2013 with six straight losses? Certainly not anyone who has been covering the team for any significant amount of time. But, now that it's happened, it's easy to see how it happened and why.

The Giants have yet to figure out how to make the best of their practice time. ?Under the news CBA, there are only so many sessions in which full contact is allowed. This has flummoxed Tom Coughlin and - color me wrong - but the team looked flat, slow and meek coming into the season as a result of not having enough contact in training camp. They were outhustled, outhit and too out of synch to recover from the errors (of commission and omission) that they committed.

Last season, the Giants were the defending Super Bowl champions and the Redskins were riding a red-hot RGIII to a division title. This year, the other two teams - Dallas and Philadelphia - are positioning themselves to battle for the NFC East title.

The Eagles gained 425 total yards in today?s 31-20 win at Tampa Bay. The Eagles are one of four teams in NFL history to gain at least 400 yards in each of its first six games joining this season?s Denver Broncos, the 2007 New England Patriots and the 1983 San Diego Chargers. This is the first time in NFL history in which two teams have accomplished the feat in the same season.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the NFL Draft is being moved to mid-May next year. Radio City Music Hall is instituting a spring show featuring the Rockettes, therefore bumping the draft back a few weeks.

Commissioner Roger Goodell stated today at the league meetings in Boston that the league may eventually look to move the draft out of the Big Apple if the RCMH conflict goes on past next year:

"We haven't found the location in New York that meets our requirements and where we think we can continue to grow the event. If we do, that will be one of the alternatives. I think one of the things we have to do at some point is start looking at other cities."

When the Giants traded up in the fourth round in this year's NFL Draft to select Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib, many fans and pundits scratched their heads and wondered what they were doing. They did not need a QB.

GM Jerry Reese said Nassib was the highest-rated player on the team's board at the time, something which was verified by CEO John Mara the other day. He showed the select few out at TPC today just why the Giants' brass thought so highly of him. ?He took the reins like a seasoned pro and appears to be on his way to validating their assessment of him.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin had some observations about his team's schedule this season. Compared to years past, this year's doesn't seem to be as demanding.

But the NFL prides itself on a level playing field. The schedule and the draft reward the failing teams and make it more difficult for the successful teams to sustain their success.

The Giants finished 9-7 last season and have not had sub-.500 finish since Coughlin's first season with the team in 2004. Since then, the Giants have drafted no higher than 15th and have traditionally drawn some of the league's toughest schedules.

Advantages:

?Look at the stretch from Week 6 to Week 14. The Giants will arrive home in the early morning hours on Friday after facing the Bears on Thursday in Week 6. That will be October 12th. The Giants then have a home game against the Vikings, a short bus ride down the NJ Turnpike to face the Eagles, then a BYE, then 3 straight home games, then a train ride (presumably) to DC, before finally having to play in San Diego Week 14. ?They might not have to board a plane from October 12th to December 7th. That?s a stretch of 56 days

The NFL released their full 256-game regular season schedule tonight. The Giants will appear in primetime five times this season, despite not qualifying for the playoffs last year.

Outside of their required home-and-home contests vs their divisional opponents (Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins), the Giants will face the NFC North (Bears, Lions, Vikings, Packers) and the AFC West (Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders).

By virtue of their second-place finish in 2012, the Giants drew the other NFC second-place finishers from last season (Seahawks, Panthers).

There seems to be ongoing confusion regarding the NFL's compensatory draft pick allotment process. The formula used for determining if teams are eligible for compensation remains a vague, arbitrary exercise that is applied on a case-by-case basis.

The official explanation from the league is as follows:

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better?compensatory free agents?than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive?compensatory draft picks.

So we all know that the NFL owners want an 18 game season so that they can make more money.

The players don't want more games and greater risk of injury for the same pay. Even if the owners gave them more money, a 16 game season is already very long for the players, many or most of whom play most or all of the season with nagging injuries.

Here's what NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had to say the other day about shortening the preseason and the prospects of expanding the regular season from 16 to 18 games.....

"We?re always going to reevaluate our season structure.? We?ve been very open about the fact that we want to address our preseason. Do we need four preseason games?? Do we only need two or three? How do we continue to develop talent? How do we continue to evaluate players?? The fans? reaction to the quality of preseason is a big concern.? So, we have to do that collectively.? That?s what our CBA does. If we wanted to implement an 18-game schedule, we could have done that in the prior CBA.? The ownership and management agreed that we would do that collectively and we would consider and balance the player health and safety issues with that.? So, we?ll continue to evaluate that.

I think the changes we made in the CBA, particularly in offseason training, the training camp period and even during the regular season ? eliminating contact, allowing players to get away from the game ? that?s been great for the players.? They deserve that.? Every player I talk to tells me they feel better at this time of the year than they?ve ever felt in the past.? I think that?s a direct result of some of the changes in the CBA.? We will continue to figure out how we can improve with our season structure, but we will not make changes? if we can?t do it in a safe and effective way.?

The NFC East is once again one of the toughest divisions in the NFL, and based on the talent level of the teams, it should be even be better.

Only the Redskins are under .500, and even they?ve shown positive signs of being a tough team. Just look at this Sunday?s game against the Giants, in which Eli Manning needed a late fourth quarter comeback to get the win.

As it stands, the Giants are 5-2 and hold a 1.5-game lead in the division, though they have not yet had their bye. The Eagles and Cowboys both check in at 3-3, and the Redskins are 3-4.

"Every year is a new year. It?s pretty easy to turn the page. That?s history, it?s in the books. It?s time to look to the future and see what we can do this season and we?re very excited about the challenges of having the opportunity to repeat. That?s a good problem to have." - Giants GM Jerry Reese

The Giants come into camp high on confidence and low on respect. They feel they have what it takes to repeat as Super Bowl champions, but the odds are stacked against them. No team has repeated since the 2003 New England Patriots. In fact, no champion has even returned to the Super Bowl the next season.

Since '07, The Giants have won twice, but their victories were four years apart. The Steelers, Colts and Patriots have all made multiple trips in the big game since '05 but none of them in consecutive seasons.

Experts have the Giants winning 9.6 ?games this year, which isn't bad considering they only won nine last season. Giant fans should not take umbrage to the low estimates for several reasons:

  • The Giants have the the most difficult schedule of any team in the NFL this year.
  • Over the past decade, Super Bowl champions have fared well. Only one did not qualify for the playoffs. But only one - New England - repeated.
  • They are actually in transition, with nearly 50% of their roster consisting of players with four or less years of NFL experience.

It?s no secret: sports fans are enamored with rankings. Whether its preseason rankings, all-time franchise rankings, or power rankings, the arrangement of teams, players, games, or anything else sports-related into a numerical hierarchy is and will continue to be a much bigger deal than it needs to be.

It?s not surprising, then, that the recent unveiling of the NFL?s top 100 players?even in arguably the most news-filled offseason in the history of the sport, one that included Peyton Manning?s free agency saga, Tim Tebow?s trade, Saints bounty-gate and, most recently, the death of Junior Seau?is a hot topic of debate amongst NFL fans. One of the main preseason storylines for the Giants last year was Osi Umenyiora?s contract situation and resultant holdout. Osi, who had two years left on the 7-year, $41 million deal he signed in 2005, insisted that in April 2008, Jerry Reese promised him either a new contract or a trade, a claim that he took to court in Brady v. NFL?the then-decertified player union?s antitrust suit against the League.

Osi never got his new deal, but he put his issues aside and was a key contributor in Big Blue?s Super Bowl run?especially in the postseason, where he recorded 3.5 sacks. Everything was copacetic: Osi, criticized in training camp for his ?selfishness? and ill-timed knee surgery, had disregarded his contractual issues and played 13 games of Pro-Bowl caliber football. More importantly, he got a ring out of it.

Tom Coughlin was once asked if the Giants' late season woes were a direct result of the league backloading their schedule to take advantage of the "flex" television opportunities.

He shrugged it off. He insisted it had nothing to with his team taking nosedives every December. In reality, it did.

What else could be the reason why they are 47-17 in the first half under Coughlin and only 26-38 in the second half? Sure there are other factors, but the schedule over the years has been largely against them.

I circled so many, I just decided to circle the whole thing. They play seven games against 2011 playoff teams plus six against their division rivals, who all missed the postseason last year but can never be overlooked. Those games are always hard fought contests.

The way the Eagles were playing at the end of the season, no one wanted to see them in the playoffs. Had they made it instead of, let's say, Atlanta, we could have seen a different picture in the NFC.

The Giants will host the NFL's 2012 opener on Wednesday, Sept 5th. The New Orleans Saints were high on the list of possible opponents for that game, but recent sanctions levied on them by the league have crippled them to the point where they will be discounted.

From ESPN NFC East Blogger Dan Graziano:

After the Giants won the Super Bowl, people began to speculate as to who the opponent would be for that game. I have always believed it would be the Green Bay Packers, since that's a matchup of the past two Super Bowl winners, a rematch of one of last year's NFC playoff games and would pit the Giants against a nationally recognizable team half of which appears in State Farm Insurance commercials.
