Before the regular season began, Odell Beckham Jr. made headlines in late August when his wide-ranging interview with Sports Illustrated went viral.

The former Giants wide receiver told Ben Baskin of SI that New York sent him to the Browns "to die," setting off his latest disgruntled comments about his team from 2014-18.

Prior to Week 2's 8:15 p.m. kickoff against the New York Jets on ESPN, Beckham further explained those words in an interview aired during the Monday Night Football pregame show with Randy Moss.

Odell Beckham Jr. is back at MetLife Stadium.

This time, however, he heads to the visiting sideline.

Just over three hours before Monday's 8:15 p.m. kickoff in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the former Giants wide receiver strolled into his home for the past five years when he arrived as a member of the Cleveland Browns for a Week 2 matchup with the New York Jets.

Is Odell right about Williams? 00:00:39
New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and Odell Beckham Jr. had some words this past week, we'll see what happens tonight.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

Odell Beckham Jr. made waves last week when he went public with accusations that Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams once told players to purposely injury him.

And that wasn't the first time Beckham thought Williams ordered his players to take the star receiver out.

The Beckham-Williams feud has its roots in 2014, when Beckham was a rookie with the Giants and Williams was fresh off his BountyGate suspension as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. In a late December game, Rams defenders appeared to target Beckham multiple times with late or questionably legal hits.

Gregg Williams
Gregg Williams

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

Gregg Williams took the bait, because of course he did. That's exactly what he wanted to do. He didn't have to. He's a grown man, 61 years old, a coach with 30 years of NFL experience. He could have just let those nasty things that Odell Beckham Jr. said about him go.

But that's not Williams' style. He's a brash, harsh, tough guy who at the very least wants to project the image that he'll never back down from a fight. So when he was asked on Friday about Beckham's accusation that Williams ordered his players to intentionally injure the attention-seeking receiver two years ago, Williams began by saying this:

"Odell who?"

Giants thin at wide out 00:00:47
New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur discusses how the Giants will have to produce at wide receiver despite being hit by the injury bug.

Sterling Shepard spent the week in concussion protocol, but the fourth-year wide receiver was out on the field Friday as the Giants turned the page from the past weekend's 35-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants hoped to have Shepard back by the time Sunday's 1 p.m. kickoff at MetLife Stadium against the Buffalo Bills arrived, but they instead enter the home opener without one of their top offensive weapons.

After Friday's practice, Shurmur said that Shepard was not entirely held out of action, but there were further steps needed to gain clearance before Sunday's game.

Williams addresses OBJ comments 00:01:09
New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams addresses the comments receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said about his coaching methods

Odell Beckham Jr. took aim at Gregg Williams after practice Thursday when the Browns wide receiver ripped the Jets defensive coordinator.

A day later, Williams fired back.

Asked about the comments Beckham made in which the ex-Giants star claimed that Williams -- while Cleveland's defensive coordinator from 2017-18 -- told Browns players to take him out of an Aug. 21, 2017, preseason game, Williams joked before shooting those down.

Former Giants star Odell Beckham is set to make his return to MetLife Stadium on Monday night when the Browns play the Jets, and the fireworks have already started.

After practice on Thursday afternoon, Beckham was asked about Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and naturally, he did not hold back any feelings towards the coach.

"Nobody in the NFL is really out to do stuff like that, I had players on this team telling me that's what he was telling them to do," Beckham said. "Take me out of the game, and its preseason. So you just know who he is ... that's the man calling the plays."

It's possible that the Giants defense is actually worse than anyone thought.

That's hard to believe, considering how low expectations were, but it was like they were barely there in the Giants' 35-17 opening day loss in Dallas. They got no pass rush at all, and their secondary was a mess of poor coverage and broken plays. The result was a 405-yard, four-touchdown performance by Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, who looked like he was running a 7-on-7 drill all day.

It was embarrassing, really. Also it was not surprising. It was clear the Giants weren't going to be able to generate much of a pass rush this season, and they drew a tough assignment anyway against the Cowboys' powerful offensive line. But the coverage was worse than advertised, particularly starting corner Antonio Hamilton, who was literally shoved around throughout the game.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Nobody on the outside really likes this Giants team, or thinks it will be any good this season. But on the inside, the feeling is much different.

Everyone in the Giants' building seems to really like what they've done with this team.

"We don't really listen to the talk outside," Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said. "We feel like we are a better team than we were a year ago. … I like the way we have built our team. I like some of the changes we made personnel wise.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Few players in Giants history had rocketed to superstardom as fast as Odell Beckham Jr. did. In what seemed like an instant, he became a household name and got caught up in the instant access and lack of privacy in the social media age.

There were times the Giants felt like it was too much for Beckham.

They have no such worries about Saquon Barkley, their newest superstar.

Sterling Shepard is ready to finally get back on the field and catch some passes. Without his thumb splint.

The fourth-year receiver hasn't seen any preseason action, and has been limited at practice due to his fractured right thumb. He was still seen with a yellow, non-contact jersey on at training camp, but would haul in any pass coming his way with his left hand.

That won't be the case on Sunday, though, as Shepard will be in the blue and white ready to take on the Cowboys in Week 1.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

The one thing that is certain about the Giants is that they are a team in transition -- or at least they will be soon. There's a new quarterback and a new era on the horizon.

How this season goes will determine how soon that future will come.

So yes, the Eli Manning-Daniel Jones dynamic and when/if the inevitable switch is made will be the dominant story of the Giants' 2019 season. There's no way to avoid that. But that isn't the only storyline to watch...

If there was one thing the Giants wanted to make clear after their first regular-season practice on Monday, it's that, "We're a better team than we were a year ago," as Pat Shurmur said. No Odell Beckham, no Landon Collins? It's no problem to them.

Yes, they were 5-11 last season so that bar isn't particularly high. And yes, there is an element of, "What else are they supposed to say?"

But the Giants really do seem to believe in addition by subtraction, that by removing a handful of big-name stars they've been able to build a better team -- no matter what the outside world thinks.

Odell Beckham Jr. had more criticism for his former team when he let loose in an interview published Tuesday by Sports Illustrated.

The in-depth piece by Ben Baskin shared more of Beckham's frustrations with the trade that sent him from the Giants to the Browns.

Beckham told SI that New York had better trade offers but shipped the star wide receiver "to die" in Cleveland.

The Baker Mayfield-Daniel Jones comments saga continued on Tuesday with Mayfield walking back his statement that it "blows my mind" the Giants drafted Jones sixth overall back in April.

"I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones," Mayfield said in a lengthy interview with GQ's Clay Skipper.

Now, with media outlets aggreagating the story everywhere, Mayfield decided to comment under Barstool Sports post to defend himself. Here's the full quote...

If you thought Odell Beckham Jr. was done going off about the Giants, you were wrong.

The same day comments emerged from Beckham's teammate Baker Mayfield where he took a shot at Giants QB Daniel Jones, Beckham was quoted in a wide-ranging piece on the Browns for Sports Illustrated where he claimed the Giants had better trade offers but sent him to the Browns "to die."

"This wasn't no business move," Beckham said. "This was personal. They thought they'd send me here to die."

Despite never playing the Giants during the regular season and not even occupying the same conference (let alone division), Browns QB Baker Mayfield seemingly has Big Blue on the brain. And his latest shot came at the expense of Daniel Jones.

During an interview with GQ's Clay Skipper, Mayfield's eyes were drawn to a SportsCenter segment about the Giants. And he unloaded.

"I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones," Mayfield said. "Blows my mind."

In addition to missing the first four games of the regular season due to a suspension for taking a banned substance he said was for fertility, Giants WR Golden Tate is now in concussion protocol.

Tate was targeted twice and reeled in one catch during Friday night's game against the Bears, with head coach Pat Shurmur saying on Sunday that Tate suffered the injury at some point during the game.

The Giants' fifth game of the regular season -- the one Tate is eligible to return for -- is Oct. 6 against the Vikings.

How will Jones perform vs. Jets? 00:00:44
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones will make his debut against the Jets in their 1st preseason game. The Thread hopes he comes out slinging.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

Some may call it arrogance, but Dave Gettleman definitely has had a quiet confidence about the Giants team he's built for this season. His critics say he did more to tear things down. He believes he's built the foundation back up.

There's a long way to go before anyone knows who's right, but the Giants will take the first steps over the next four weeks in the preseason, which opens for them against the Jets on Thursday night. Here's a look at what Gettleman and everyone else will be watching for, as they search for signs of just how good (or not) this Giants team can be:

1. How ready is QB Daniel Jones?

The plan is for the Giants to ride Eli Manning this season, far enough that Jones never has to see the field. But plans can change, and quarterback controversies have a funny way of just happening. Whether one does, depends a lot on the ability of Jones.

Dave Gettleman is well aware of how many fans and players feel about him. The Giants GM has made a string of curious decisions since taking over the job at the end of the 2017 season that has opened him up as a punching bag for fans and media alike.

"People make fun of me," Gettleman told Jonathan Jones of Sports Illustrated. "If it makes them happy, let them have it. I don't care. I just know I'm blessed. I've got the Lord and my family and I've got football."

Gettleman explained some of those decisions, or at least the philosophy behind his decision-making, in a lengthy SI profile of the Giants GM. Here are some of the topics he addressed:

The Giants' wide receiving corps has taken a big hit early on with Sterling Shepard injured, Golden Tate facing a four-game suspension, and Corey Coleman out for the season with a torn ACL. That was expected to be the top three players on the depth chart, but now things have changed here quickly in East Rutherford.

But with the losses, other receivers are beginning to step up.

Cody Latimer, entering his fifth year in the league, is looking to take advantage of this opportunity that will likely see him get many reps to start the season. The former second-round pick by the Broncos didn't pan out well in Denver, and after four years with the squad, they didn't mind moving on from him.

With injuries and a suspension sidelining the Giants' top three receivers, the team is desperate for any wideout help it can get. However, the team's latest volunteer to catch Eli Manning's passes is definitely an unexpected source.

Newly acquired safety Jabrill Peppers proved after practice Tuesday that when he says he wants to help the team however possible, he really means it.

"I think I could do whatever I put my mind to," Peppers told NJ Advance Media.

The blows just keep coming for the Giants' wide receivers.

Golden Tate is appealing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's Performance-Enhancing Drug Policy, a source confirmed to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tate will have his appeal scheduled the first week of August and a resolution should be reached before the start of the season. He believes he has a legitimate case.

Odell Beckham Jr. recently claimed in a GQ article that he was keeping the Giants' brand alive and insinuated he was the reason fans were tuning into Giants games.

That has not totally resonated with others, including for Giant Tiki Barber.

Barber, who was asked about Beckham by TMZ Sports, said that in regards to last year it was running back Saquon Barkley who was drawing fans in to watch the Giants.

As Saquon Barkley heads into his second pro season with the Giants, the sky seems to be the limit for what he can accomplish.

As a rookie, Barkley took the NFL by storm, rushing for 1,307 yards, adding another 721 as a receiver, and totaling 15 touchdowns.

But could bigger and better things be in store for Year Two?

Included in the group of topics was Beckham taking credit for getting the Giants on prime-time games during his tenure with the team and keeping "the brand alive." Beckham has since said he was done talking about the G-men.

But Eli Manning never got a chance to chime in, and the quarterback finally has. The 16-year vet brushed off the comments, but also subtly said there's proof of otherwise.

Those plans will have to go on hold for the moment, though, as the team announced on Thursday that Shepard fractured his thumb.

The fourth-year pro will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, according to the Giants. Sources have told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano that the team is hopeful Shepard will be ready by Week 1, though he'll likely miss the entire preseason.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Eli Manning reported for his 16th Giants training camp on Wednesday, sounding a little more reflective than he ever has before. He understands his situation, that he's 38 and in the final year of his contract, with a first-round rookie quarterback suddenly on his heels.

So yes, he knows this could be his last Giants training camp.

But don't be surprised if he's still here next year, too.

For the past three seasons, Sterling Shepard has come into training camp knowing that Odell Beckham Jr. was going to be next to him in the receivers room. The two were great friends, working out together in the offseason on the West Coast and spending time together off the field during the season as well.

But that all changed when No. 87 walked into the doors in East Rutherford on Wednesday.

Beckham has been traded to the Browns, and now Shepard is the longest-tenured Giant in that receivers room. In turn, the Giants are certainly going to be putting more pressure on Shepard to step up in the absence of their No. 1 receiver.

Odell Beckham Jr. talks promising Browns future and moving on from his days with the NY Giants

Odell Beckham Jr. started off training camp week with a thorough bashing of the Giants in his interview with GQ magazine. But he wasn't going to follow up his comments during his youth ProCamp in Cleveland on Tuesday.

Beckham was on hand to lead his camp with 650 kids present on a beautiful Cleveland day. When it was time to answer a few questions, Beckham must've known he was going to be asked about his Giants comments. He told GQ he felt "disrespected" during his time with the Giants, saying "This team has not been good for the last six years. Period."

However, the star wideout was more reserved in his answer this time around.

It wasn't just Odell Beckham Jr. who bashed the Giants on Monday. Landon Collins also jumped in on the action.

However, he didn't use his words to send his shots their way.

Collins made an appearance on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., and he began to talk about his upcoming season with his new team -- the Redskins. The Pro Bowl safety went into free agency this offseason after the Giants failed to give him a solid look at an extension. In turn, he signed a six-year deal worth $84 million with $26 million guaranteed, which is his first big contract since his rookie deal expired.

Odell Beckham Jr. bashes Giants 00:01:21
Former New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. sounds off on the Giants again in a recent interview with GQ Magazine.

This wasn't the first time Odell Beckham Jr. criticized the Giants or their general manager, and it surely won't be the last. By now, everyone knows how he feels. He's made it clear. He "wasn't happy" with the Giants, felt "disrespected," and had already decided, "I just can't do this anymore."

He also just couldn't believe how the Giants treated someone as important as him.

It's old news by now, really. But every time he speaks, every time he says publicly how miserable life with the Giants was, and how he was misused, it's easy to picture Dave Gettleman leaning back in his chair, putting his feet up on his desk, and smiling a knowing smile.

During a wide-ranging interview with GQ, former Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. ripped into his former team yet again, seemingly placing most of the blame for the bad blood on GM Dave Gettleman.

"My initial reaction was not disappointment.… I felt disrespected," Beckham said about the exact moment he found out he was traded to the Browns -- adding that he didn't care what the Giants got back. "Like, after everything I've done for them. This is me being honest..."

Pressed further on who specifically disrespected him, Beckham said it was Gettleman -- while at the same time showing love to John Mara.

Browns QB Baker Mayfield is pumped about having Odell Beckham Jr. to throw to this season. And while speaking about Beckham coming to Cleveland, he mixed in a dig at Giants fans.

"He's here to work, and he wants to be surrounded by people who love him and support him and allow him to be himself," Mayfield told ESPN's Mina Kimes. "He's here to play in front of fans who actually care, who will actually show up to every game and pack the stadium and love him for who he is."

Some facts when it comes to Mayfield's claim that Browns fans "pack the stadium" ...

Football fans look forward to the release of each year's installment of the Madden NFL franchise, but Giants fans may want to play with a different team in this year's game.

The Madden NFL 20 player and team ratings were released on Monday, and the Giants have the lowest team rating in the NFC at 77. That's the second-lowest rating only in front of the Dolphins (74). Their NFC East rivals in the Eagles and Cowboys are rated much higher at 89 and 88 respectively.

The Giants' gem on their roster is RB Saquon Barkley, who led the Giants with a 91 overall (and was ranked the fifth-best running back in the game). Other than that, the ratings weren't too kind to the Giants.

It is no secret Giants GM Dave Gettleman thinks highly of safety Jabrill Peppers. It is part of the reason he followed through on the trade that sent Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns.

At least one of Peppers' former teammates in Cleveland seems to share the same sentiment as Gettleman.

Browns tight end David Njoku, who was conducting a football camp in Cedar Grove, NJ on Saturday, is excited for what Peppers can bring to the Giants.

The Giants may have only gotten to the playoffs just once with Odell Beckham Jr. on the team, but Browns tight end David Njoku believes the former Big Blue receiver may be the missing piece to take the Browns to the next level.

"Once we realized we had him locked in, we're excited," Njoku said at a football camp he runs in Cedar Grove, NJ, per NJ.com. "We have a great team. It's up to us to take advantage of this opportunity."

Njoku, who was a rookie during the winless 0-16 season in 2017, began seeing a shift in the Browns culture last season with Baker Mayfield at quarterback and other new offensive weapons, such as Jarvis Landry and Nick Chubb to help lead the team to a 7-8-1 season.

Golden Tate on Jones and Giant 00:01:33
Golden Tate has early praise for Daniel Jones. Also, the wide out didn't think about being compared to Odell Beckham, but isn't worried.

Wide receiver Golden Tate has been a dynamic playmaker throughout his NFL career, and he's hoping to bring that part of his game with him to the Giants' offense.

With Training Camp just a few weeks away, Tate spoke recently about what he saw from rookie QB Daniel Jones during minicamp, and why he's not worried about his play being compared to that of Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants made some big changes heading into the 2019 season -- the obvious being the departure of stars like Odell Beckham Jr., Landon Collins, and Olivier Vernon. But despite those losses, the Giants are confident that their change will be for the better starting this year.

Will it be enough to fight for an NFC East division title?

Many know how tough the NFC East can be, with no team winning the division in back-to-back seasons since the Eagles won four straight from 2001-2004. The Cowboys were the winners last season at 10-6, but can they repeat?

Let's see where the Giants sit on the list heading into training camp in a couple weeks...

Both of New York's football teams have potential MVP candidates in their backfield, according to Bovada. Only one of the two have a player under center that was given odds, though.

Odds Shark released Bovada's latest odds for the NFL's 2019 MVP Award and both Jets' running back Le'Veon Bell and Giants' running back Saquon Barkley were listed by the odds makers. Both landed with +5000 odds to take home the top-individual silverware next season.

The only rusher with higher odds to land the honor was Alvin Kamara from the New Orleans Saints.

A few weeks ago during Giants minicamp, we profiled five dark horse players who turned heads. At the end of the day though, every football player knows that, while minicamp standouts are nice stories, the real competition starts in training camp.

Big Blue training camp starts in a little over two weeks. It's a 90-man competition for 53 spots, and more than a few veterans will be left behind if they don't put up a good showing.

Here are five guys who are on the hot seat for the Giants:

The Giants let a lot of big-name, big-talent players go this offseason. In fact, Odell Beckham Jr., Landon Collins and Olivier Vernon were easily three of the most important players the Giants had.

How will they survive without them? The answer to that will be provided by the performances of several key players this season.

So here's a look at the Giants' 10 most important players for 2019:

Eli Manning is undoubtedly a glass half-full kind of guy.

The Giants quarterback expressed optimism that the offense can be better in 2019 than it was last season, despite the team's decision to trade away Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns.

"I think we can be productive and score more points and be a better offense," Manning told NFL Network this weekend.

After the Jets spent big money this summer, making splashes with the additions of Le'Veon Bell, C.J. Mosley, Jamison Crowder and Quinnen Williams, there has been a renewed buzz around Florham Park.

Meanwhile, their stadium-mates, the Giants, continued their roster revamp in controversial fashion - they said goodbye to stars Odell Beckham Jr. and Landon Collins, drafted a quarterback sixth overall and turned the keys over to an extremely young defense.

While the Giants are still rebuilding, the Jets are going all-in with a young quarterback, a budding defense and a new coach.

Say what you want about your opinion on the Giants trading away star WR Odell Beckham Jr. His former teammates miss him.

"Just his presence," Sterling Shepard told The Post's Paul Schwartz, adding that there has been an adjustment period to get used to him not in the locker room. "He's a great guy, he's loved around this facility. Just his presence, I guess."

Beckham has always been one of a kind since entering the league, and it showed in his awe-inspiring play that was matched with an exuberant personality as well. Whether it was making his signature one-handed grabs like it was just another day on the gridiron, or dancing in around practice with players like Shepard and Saquon Barkley, Beckham was always keeping things light and fun.

Odell Beckham Jr. is attempting to smooth over his comments about the Giants in a Complex Magazine interview earlier this week.

After revealing that he was never going to live up to his potential "mentally, physically, spiritually," in New York, the Browns receiver tweeted multiple times on Saturday afternoon about his love for New York and the Giants organization, but also thanked the "haters" he dealt with, too.

"I'm thankful GOD gave me and opportunity to play my first years where he did," Beckham tweeted. "I'm thankful for every memory and experience I had there. The good and the bad. I'm thankful for every hater and supporter, for every fan. I will always have luv 4 that place. But we ALL have moved on."
