Pierre McGuire 2013-14

On May 19th, Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 Radio and was asked about the day the Rangers acquired Ryan McDonagh from the Montreal Canadiens.

Pierre said, "one of the silliest trades that ever took place. I was sitting in the lobby of the Westin hotel about to go on Montreal radio and I let them have it on the radio, it was just such a silly trade. It just shows you that there are certain people, not all because I know some people who were really upset about the deal, there were certain people who didn't do enough work and evaluate the prospect properly. The Rangers were just salivating and licking their lips. The day before the deal happened one of the Rangers scouts game me a call and said 'we got a chance to get Ryan McDonagh.' I said "are you sure about that' he said 'yea" and I said "if you can do it, do it, get it done.' And he said "we are well on our way.' I was shocked, "utterly shocked."

He added, "those were the days that they were trying to get shortcuts and by getting Gomez they could get Gionta and by getting Gionta they could get Cammalleri but that isn't how you build your team. The Rangers tried that for years, it doesn't work."

Pierre McGuire was asked on TSN 1050 on Monday morning what the market for Brad Richards is likely to be.

Pierre said, "Depends what his price point is, it does. For a lot of these guys who are older, that have had good careers but you can see they are on the downside of things, what their price point is will be the magic number for a lot of teams. If Brad prices himself right and he is dealing with some real professionals at Newport Sports with Pat Morris and Don Meehan and Mark Guy and the whole team, they do a great job.

He added, "If they price point him properly there will be significant interest because he is a specialist on the PP that can help your team. If you are looking for a lot of 5 on 5 stuff it will be problematic but if you are counting on specialty points, especially on the PP, it can work. "

12:05PM: Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning and asked about the Rangers and how they lost the Stanley Cup Final:

Pierre said, "It's pretty tough, to lose three games in OT? and two in double OT but they left it out there, they have nothing to be ashamed of, the New York Rangers, they were the underdog going into the series and probably deserved a better fate in either game or two but they weren't very good in game three, they were solid in game four and played a tremendous game five but, that is a tough way to lose. "

Ryan McDonagh said today that you can't say the Rangers didn't leave everything out there. (Bruce Beck)

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 on Friday?morning and was asked about the Rangers, game two and what the Rangers need to do better.

Pierre said that the Rangers need to score more than 3 goals and "the biggest thing is that there isn't a lot of room for error and everyone knows it having watched game one. The Rangers were pretty good through the first 40 but couldn't hold the lead and that is problematic as you go along. The coaching staff is aware, the players are aware and you almost have no room for error, you need to be almost letter perfect."

"I think this is far from over, you still aren't in trouble until you lose on home ice. The Rangers can be down 0-2 but why not hold serve. The Kings were down 3-0 vs San Jose and lost on home ice but found a way to win. LA had to go into Chicago and win a game seven on the road. Everybody is pontificating that they will wipe the floor with the Rangers but who knows, let the games play out."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning to discuss Rangers/Kings from last night.

Pierre said that the Rangers caught the Kings off guard with their speed and up tempo attack in the first period.

On the third period, Pierre said "LA made some adjustments and Alain Vigneault was begging his guys in the third period to get their legs moving and stop sitting back and get back to pushing the pace and attacking and he was saying it over and over and they tried and tried but couldn't get it over."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning to talk about game one between the Rangers and Kings.

Pierre said that it's tough to have a speed game when you are getting hit so much and if the margin is 2-1 it's "tough." He added, "what impressed about LA was how refined they are in the little areas of the game, neutral zone regroup. Cycle plays off of faceoffs, simple things that sound easy but they are so refined and no drop off from line one to four.

He said that Jonathon Quick is fine after taking a shot to the throat area yesterday.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning and was asked what he thought would happen tonight in game six between the Rangers and Canadiens.

Pierre said, "I think it's going to be tough for Montreal, I hope this series goes seven, but I think this will be tough for Montreal only because the Rangers, I believe, because they are a more mature team, have learned their lesson. I was with Marty St. Louis last night at an arena near our house, he lives pretty close to where I live and his little boy was at the rink and my little guy was there and we were just shooting the breeze and, again, he said that 'we didn't play real well last night and we will be ready to go tomorrow and we are a mature team' and I agree with him. They are a mature team, much more of a mature team than people think and i think that is one thing thing will give them an advantage tonight."

Pierre McGuire said on TSN 1050 Friday that the series between the Rangers and Canadiens will be a "track meet" and have less physical play than the previous series' the teams have played this year.

He added, "two original six teams, fantastic hockey to watch, so fast, so skillful and what a goalie battle."

Pierre said that Montreal's philosophy is to play a fast and skilled game that has them coming after you in waves and at a high pace. (NY Post)

10:31AM: This morning on TSN 1050,?Pierre McGuire was asked about the Rangers and Flyers game seven.

Pierre said, "The first goal really mattered, the energy in the building was great and then obviously the second goal really mattered for the Rangers. They had very good control of the game until the third period. Steve Mason stood on his head, it should have been 4 or 5 nothing for the Rangers. Philly battled back and when I went to Henrik Lundqvist after the game, he probably had two a good 2-3 minutes after the handshakes to chill out and he was still having a hard time breathing, that is how much duress he was under at the end of the game in the last ten minutes."

1:06PM: Ray Ferraro on Leafs Lunch on TSN Radio said: "The Flyers did nothing, it was like their best line with Giroux had two shots, both by Hartnell, I don't even remeber them. Giroux was non-existent which surprises me, Simmonds I didn't notice him. In the first they tried to be physical on the defense and the Rangers had the bobbles for sure. Once the second period started it was more Rangers than Flyers and somewhere late in the third the Flyers had four offensive zone faceoffs. If you only have four is the puck ever there? Lundqvist could have played the third in the chair. In fact, had Lundqvist not played they would have lost 4-2 because they only had one shot."

Ray adds, "The Rangers PP had it's ups and downs, I felt terrible for Akeson. He must have been dying a slow death there. I can't believe the Flyers will be that bad in game two because they were awful in the first game. Somewhere along the way they need to win in New York and it hasn't happened in three years, in none of those games have they scored three goals."

Ray on Brad Richards and a buyout, "Yes. I do, you just told me, six years at $6.6. He is already a pretty slow guy and doesn't get around the ice well. You can buy him out later but still chew money on the cap. Myself, yes. He isn't the top center and he won't be moving forward. When people talk about 2004, that was 10 years ago. That isn't coming back. Yes, I would think so. If I were in charge I would be leaning that far. That said, if you win the cup do you give him a $36 million thank you?"

Darren Dreger was asked about the Rangers and if they have enough scoring to contend in the playoffs this morning on the Leafs Breakfast segment on TSN1050.

Dreger said "If they get hot, yes. The Kreider injury will be problematic for them because it attacks their depth. When you are losing players with injury at this time of year it causes grief and that is why when you are as bold as the Rangers are, 2-3 times a year whether it be the draft, trade deadline or free agency in acquiring players, you do that not because you just want to be a cap team, you do that because you have to find a way to make sure that you have that depth when you need it the most. Marty St. Louis hasn't hit full stride yet and maybe that is coming, maybe the chemistry is there with Rick as it appears he will be playing with Rick Nash on that line moving forward and you look at some of the other assets that the Rangers have. Above all that and we saw it last night, is the play of Henrik Lundqvist. He has had an up and down kind of season but as of late it has been more up than down and he has been a key contributor in the Rangers winning streak so if he gets white hot then look out, the Rangers will be tough."

When asked about the game last night, Pierre McGuire said on TSN1050 Thursday morning and said, "their goalie made a big difference in the first period, they were pretty much dominated but had a 1-0 lead after the first period. Philly couldn't find a way to beat Henrik Lundqvist, they had a ton of chances but couldn't find a way and then the Rangers settled down. The Rangers are a good team. McDonagh and Girardi drive the team. Claude Giroux had a tough time because it's at MSG and the last change, Giroux, Voracek, who scored on the PP but did nothing 5 on 5, and Hartnell had a tough time because that tandem of McDonagh and Girardi shut them down."

10:45PM: Pierre spoke with Ryan McDonagh after the game:

  • On beating the Flyers 8 straight at home, "we just play to our strengths and keep it simple. Not spending a lot of time in our zone, get our forecheck, use our forwards speed and get some offense."
  • On his offensive game, "it starts with my D partner, he talks a lot to me and is steady back there in case something happens. The forwards are doing a good job of getting back and we are doing a good job being able to jump in the play."
  • On the second period, "I thought we did a good job keeping them to the outside and not letting them get second opportunities and we gotta continue to do that because this team is hungry around the net and our forwards did a good job tracking to give us a chance."
  • On the end of the game skirmish, "Some frustration, what the games mean at this point in the season. The points are all that matter to us and we got them today."
  • On going on the road, "take the same momentum we got from being at home here and take it on the road. We know what to do here to win games and it's a matter of being good in our own zone, playing simple and taking care of our opportunities."

"Alain Vigneault had to do a total role reversal from where they used to be and it took a long time. They used to be a shot blocking, box and one defense, more of a zone defense under John Tortorella. Now with Alain Vigneault it's straight man to man, push the pace, you can see a player like John Moore trying to do that, you can see Ryan McDonagh is having a career year for points. They are all trying to get involved in the rush. They have done a good job with their smaller players like Mats Zuccarello, like Derek Stepan. The chemistry with Stepan and Chris Kreider is apparent. You add in Marty St. Louis and he and Brad Richards have good chemistry. The most consistent line they have had all year was Benoit Pouliot, Mats Zuccarello, those two guys were great insulating Derick Brassard. You look at the Rangers and they are starting to become a deep team." (Pierre McGuire on TSN 1050, Monday)

On TSN 1050 this morning, Mike Richards and Dave Bastl chatted with Pierre McGuire about the rumors that the Rangers may be willing to part with captain Ryan Callahan.

Bastl said that Callahan was John Tortorella's captain and in response, Pierre said, "I still think he is the New York Rangers captain. He is extremely popular with his teammates, he carries himself that way. The other day he dove face first in front of a shot when he had no need to against the New Jersey Devils when the game was firmly in the Rangers hands but he still did it. He leads by example and I think there is a lot of respect from Ulf Samuelsson, Scott Arniel and Alain Vigneault towards Ryan Callahan and his captaincy."

Pierre added, "the problem is that they are running out of cap space and they have Danny Girardi and Ryan Callahan that you need to get signed after you just signed Henrik Lundqvist to a gigantic deal. The cap becomes an issue for the Rangers."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning and said that the atmosphere at Yankee Stadium yesterday was "surreal" and that it was an amazing venue to hold an outdoor game.

He said that the ice wasn't the best, but also not terrible and on the game, Pierre said, "the Devils made terrible decisions after they had a 3-1 lead, bad pinches, bad turnovers, bad decisions and those pucks ended up in the back of the net, they also had some bad luck but man oh man, the Rangers played fast, smart and man oh man are they going go be dangerous."

Pierre was then asked why the Rangers are the visiting team in both games and said, "I don't know if the league has even talked about this, but the league has to buy up home games and it's cheaper to buy a Devils and/or Islanders home game than it is to buy a Rangers home game. It cost more money to buy a Rangers home game that is sold out every night."

On TSN 1050 this morning, Pierre McGuire spoke about the teams who are at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Pierre said that the teams in the East that "you need to be careful" of are Boston, Tampa, Pittsburgh and the Rangers with Montreal in the next tier.

On the Rangers, Pierre said "the New York Rangers...remember when we talked about 'beware of the Rangers' they are coming hard. What they did to Washington last night was not good for Washington and real good for the Rangers. The Rangers are really dangerous right now and they have won 7 of their last 10 games and they are going to be in a real good spot here."

On Monday morning Pierre McGuire was on TSN1050 with Mike Richards and Richards asked him if the rest of the East is going "uh oh when they look at the Rangers."

Pierre responded and said, "I think we talked about it last week, beware of the Ranger....beware. Lundqvist is back, Kreider is moving, Nash is jumping through the gym, Brassard is starting to pick it up offensively, Stepan might have played his best game of the season last night, he was really good. Michael Del Zotto looked a ton better, John Moore moved over from left side to right side so that Del Zotto can be more comfortable. You can go down the line. McDonagh and Girardi become the tandem that they used to be, you can go down the line right now. The crowd was electric at MSG on Sunday night, the crowd was wild. It was pretty exciting if you are a Ranger fan, it's pretty amazing to watch."

He added, "now that Dan Carcillo has been added to the mix you can see that there is bad blood between him and Jay Rosehill, him and Wayne Simmonds. You are going to have some nasty stuff. You had an eye gouge, or a potential eye gouge that people are saying from the Rangers that people are saying that Brayden Schenn eye gouged John Moore."

While on TSN 1050 this morning, Pierre McGuire opened up his segment by telling the two Toronto hosts to "beware of the Rangers."

Mike Richards, the host, then asked McGuire about the Rangers and Pierre said, "beware the Ranger. Look out. Power play is working. Last night was the best that I have seen Rick Nash play all season long. He really had jump in his step, he was challenging Corey Crawford, he was challenging the Chicago defense. The PP over the last couple years under John Tortorella and Mike Sullivan was anywhere between 20th and 25th in the league. They are 8th in the league under Scotty Arniel and it's a completely different PP. Ryan McDonagh has elevated his game. Derek Stepan has elevated his game. They have more of a four line attack. They have moved Brian Boyle from center to wing and that has made a difference, so more of a checking role. They have become more comfortable in Alain Vigneault's man to man system inside the blueline where at the beginning they were having a real tough time and losing men in coverage all the time. Now they look more comfortable in it and they look better in it."

6:34PM: Darren Dreger said on TSN Drive, "this Rangers team has not played well at all on home ice. It's a frustrated organization and one that is directionally challenged I would say. Goaltending hasn't been great given the monstrous contract that Henrik Lundqvist just signed.? When I say directionally challenged, management is still trying to figure out, not whether they want to blow it up or embrace significant change change things up front, play a more aggressive grinding game that Alain Vigneault likes to play but maybe doesn't have the bodies to do that. I am not predicting that their will be wholesale changes in the new year but I know that there is an appetite for a high level of change."

5:04PM: Bob McKenzie said on TSN Drive, "I thought they might be spinning their wheels a bit but I didn't know it would be to the extent that it would be. Henrik Lundqvist would continue to stand on his head, they would have a tough time scoring goals, they have to stay healthy and they haven't. I didn't anticipate that Lundqvist would be this shaky and inconsistent, not starting back to backs on a couple of occasions. That could be a factor and has taken me back a bit. It could be problematic in the bigger picture for them if he doesn't get his game back."

This morning on TSN 1050, Pierre McGuire was asked about the Rangers goalie situation and if there is anything going on with Henrik Lundqvist and the team.

Pierre said, "No. I don't think so. Especially after last night when Cam was a little shaky. I watched parts of that game. You could see that Henrik wasn't happy but the one thing is that Alain Vigneault wanted to probe and see what he had in Cam Talbot and he found out that Talbot is a useful player but he isn't capable of being a starter at this point."

This morning on TSN 1050, Pierre McGuire spoke about the Rangers and Bruins game today, saying "those two teams are going to be going after one enough pretty good."

Pierre said that the Bruins are an angry team right now after what happened against Detroit (6-1 loss) and "the Rangers are coming in on a little bit of a high after winning in South Florida 5-2. These guys are huge rivals so it should be interesting game.

He added, "the biggest thing with the Rangers in Boston is going to be will the Rangers have enough physicality to match up with the four line offensive onslaught of the Bruins."

This morning on TSN 1050, Pierre McGuire was asked about the Rangers and said, "I did the game and the biggest thing was Henrik Lundqvist in the first 12 minutes was the story. If he isn't super great the Rangers aren't even in that game. Lundqvist handles it really well, he bails his team out and they start to get some confidence. Evgeni Malkin played a terrible game for Pittsburgh, that was exposed because of the first goal by Ryan McDonagh. Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello their line had a tremendous night for the Rangers. Ryan Callahan coming back for the second game after breaking his thumb, he scored a goal on a double deflection. First it was Brad Richards and then Callahan off a shot from Carl Hagelin. There was a lot....after the first 12 minutes, if you are a Rangers fan you are really excited. I think for the Rangers that was a very important win and I talked to Marc Staal after and said can you use this win to get your team propelled forward instead of being helter and skelter and he said that it was really important for the group."

He was then asked about Marc Staal and said, "I ran a tape in the third period, I put together a tape of just how well he played last night. He played a little less than 19 minutes but he was really solid. He was hitting, he was moving the puck and good in PK situations. I was really impressed by what he did, most importantly is his ability to play against quicker players. He told me in the interview that timing was a serious issue in the first six or seven games but that in the last 10 days to 2 weeks his timing has been a lot better and more comfortable on the ice.

On TSN 1050 this morning, Pierre McGuire was asked about the Rangers and if they were going to score goals this season.

Pierre said, "they need Rick Nash back, that would help. When they get three power plays including a 5 on 3 for a long period of time with the game on the line they need to score there. They were 0-3 and I think they will start to get more consistent goal scoring. We saw a little of it on Saturday night when they beat Carolina 5-1 and Derek Stepan had a Hat Trick and Carl Hagelin had two."

He adds "they desperately need the presence of Rick Nash back in the lineup and talking to people around the Rangers he isn't even around the group right now so there is no timetable on him. One of the things I can tell you with Rick Nash, even though he is a guy that has huge Olympic pedigree, there is no guarantee he is going to be on Team Canada if he can't get back playing pretty soon. That becomes a story as you go along because of the concussion issues. The Rangers can start scoring when they get Nash back."

Pierre McGuire, on TSN 1050 Thursday, was asked if he thought the Rangers were about to emerge as a top team in the struggling Metropolitan Division.

McGuire said, "Based on last night I am, based on the atmosphere around the team in the locker room, based on the composure by the coach. I was really impressed with their group last night. Washington is a pretty good team, they aren't a bad team at all. The way the Rangers came in here last night and shut down the number one power play in the league was outstanding. Alain Vigneault's bench manner was fantastic, especially late in the game with the officials, just calmed his whole team down."

He added that he loves how Vigneault is working with his players on the bench as well as his relationship with Scott Arniel and Ulf Samuelsson.
