A Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is a must-watch for hockey fans. But Tuesday night's Game 7 between Dallas and St. Louis in the Western Conference semifinals will have significant implications for the Rangers and one of their ex-players.
A Stars win would not only send former fan favorite Mats Zuccarello to the next round, but it'd convert the second round pick the Rangers traded him for earlier this year into a first-rounder.
Zuccarello suffered a broken arm during his first game with the Stars, but returned for the team's playoff run. In the first round, he was a pivotal part of Dallas' upset over Nashville, scoring three goals.
After all, the Stars acquired "Zucc" with the main point being his wealth of playoff experience. He played 60 postseason games during his Rangers tenure and tallied 11 goals plus 20 assists in those contests.
Once the Stars' season ends, Zuccarello will become a free agent. If he re-signs with Dallas, then the 2020 third round pick the Stars sent to the Rangers will become a first round pick that year.
New York owns the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. As the team looks to turn the corner from rebuilding to contending, an abundance of first round picks is a good problem to have.
So come Tuesday evening, Rangers fans will surely be pulling for the Stars -- and perhaps a deal between Dallas and Zuccarello sometime this summer.
