With the NHL trade deadline less than a week away, the Rangers have already made a move by acquiring forward prospect Julien Gauthier from the Hurricanes, the team announced on Tuesday.
In exchange for the 22-year-old, the Rangers are sending defenseman prospect Joey Keane to Carolina.
The Hurricanes' first-round pick in 2016, Gauthier has spent the first five games of his NHL career with the big club this season, where he has an assist and a 2 plus-minus. His last trip up to the Hurricanes was back in December.
Gauthier has spent most of his time with the Charlotte Checkers this season, totaling 37 points (26 goals and 11 assists) over 44 games. That's a big improvement from his 2018-19 season that saw 27 goals and 14 assists over 75 games.
As for Keane, the 20-year-old has been with the Hartford Wolf Pack (Rangers AHL affiliate) all season, tallying eight goals and 22 assists over 49 games. He was a third-round draft pick by New York back in the 2018 NHL Draft.
