10/5/17 | While speaking about Skjei on Thursday, " Vigneault said that the Rangers intend to use Skjei as a penalty killer this season.
Vigneault added that Skjei "understands and we have made it clear that with his upside and potential that we expect more from him and I believe we are going to get it. There is a lot of talent, he just needs to focus on the right areas and he will be a real solid player for us."
10/3/17 | 6:55PM: Alain Vigneault said on the first day of training camp that he is expecting Brady Skjei to compete for a spot in the Rangers top four.
Vigneault said that Skjei is a "good player" that they are expecting "more" from both offensively and defensively.
- Skjei is expected to start the season on the Rangers second defense pair, along with Brendan Smith.
He said that it's noticeable that Skjei spent the summer working out with Ryan McDonagh and that Skjei was right near McDonagh in terms of the Rangers fitness scoring.
Vigneault said that all of the work Skjei has put in over the summer will materialize with better/quicker decision making with an without the puck.
He added that Skjei is "doing everything he can to be the best player he can be and we need that from our group if we are going to be a better team."
Skjei said that he wants to be trusted at both ends of the rink, needs to be stronger in front of the net and said that he thinks he is ready "to take that next step." (NY Post)
Ryan McDonagh said that Skjei worked out this summer knowing that he might get more minutes and said that he is "really excited to see him get going." (NYR)
Larry Brooks writes that Skjei needs to "morph" into a reliable defender as he assumes more "matchup responsibility" in moving up from the third pair to the second pair. (NY Post)
