It took Jets new WR Breshad Perriman until his fourth NFL season to finally put up solid numbers on the stat sheet. Being a former first-round pick, it hasn't been what he expected.

But following a 2019 season that saw all career highs, Perriman isn't holding back his expectations for 2020 with his latest team in New York.

"I have no doubt in my mind that it will definitely be a season to remember for me, as far as production-wise," Perriman told NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "I'm just really excited for the opportunities that I will get, just being in a bigger role."

One of the key pieces to the Jets' offensive line rebuild under GM Joe Douglas is the addition of Connor McGovern, likely to be the team's starting center come next season.

Originally a fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2016, McGovern went on to start 36 games with Denver, showcasing the ability to play both guard and center.

Shortly after the new league year began, Douglas and the Jets swooped in and inked McGovern to a three-year deal, and during his introductory conference call with reporters on Friday, McGovern explained why the Jets made so much sense for him.

The numbers Breshad Perriman put up over the final five games last season didn't just stand out because they were some of the best in the NFL. They stood out because they were nothing like anything else he did in his career. The former first-round pick had never shown signs of being a true, No. 1 receiver.

But those 25 catches for 506 yards and five touchdowns he had for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last December? "That," he said, "was just a sneak peek at what's to come."

If it is, that will be great news for the Jets and quarterback Sam Darnold, because the 26-year-old Perriman would be the big-play receiver they so desperately need. The Jets signed the 6-2, 215-pounder to a one-year, $8 million contract just hours after Robby Anderson spurned the Jets for the Carolina Panthers.

The Jets only started their rebuilding project during free agency, and it's clearly far from finished. There is work to be done in several key areas, including at cornerback, receiver, and along the offensive line.

New GM Joe Douglas has eight draft picks to finish that work, including four valuable selections in the first two days of the draft. There's still a month to go before the first pick is made on April 23, but here's one look at how Douglas' selections could go in SNY's first Jets 7-round Mock Draft:

First round (11th overall) - Alabama OT Jedrick Wills

There is a very good argument for taking a receiver here, especially since it's possible no receiver will come off the board in the Top 10 picks. Taking the top-rated prospect at a position of need will be enticing.

Sam, we mustache you a question about your facial hair.

Look, while we've all been doing our best while social distancing and staying at home over the past couple weeks, we've made some questionable choices, whether it's eating cookies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, debating changing clothes every day or so, and yes, even growing some questionable facial hair.

Which brings us to the Jets' young quarterback.

Darnold recently posted a Q&A that included a question about what his favorite pregame song is.

When Joe Douglas first met Sam Darnold's parents at a preseason game last August, he did his best to reassure them that their son was in good hands. He knew Darnold was the Jets' most precious commodity. So he vowed their kid would be treated that way, too.

"I promised them I was going to do everything in my power to take care of Sam with protection and playmakers," Douglas said in a conference call on Wednesday. "I think we still have a lot to do in both those regards."

Yes they do -- especially when it comes to finding playmakers to help make the Darnold-run offense go.

Now that the first major wave of NFL free agency has come and gone, Jets general manager Joe Douglas took some time on Wednesday to update where the team stands at this point of the offseason.

While Douglas touched on major topics such as the team's level of interest in free-agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney and where things stand with building around quarterback Sam Darnold, he also spoke on a number of other items, including the team's recent additions on both sides of the ball, preparing for the 2020 NFL Draft from home, and where things stand with a possible Jamal Adams extension.

Here are six key takeaways from Douglas' call:

It's officially April and that means it's officially NFL Draft month.

The Jets, like the rest of the league, are conducting video conference interviews with prospects as no one is allowed to come in for official visits. And following those, Jets GM Joe Douglas and the rest of his group should have solidified their "Big Board," or the rankings of players in their eyes heading into the first round on April 23.

What will that Big Board look like? No one really ever knows for sure, but we can always make some educated guesses. The Jets might rank each individual player even if they don't believe they will fall to No. 11 overall.

The Jets have brought back Sam Darnold's backup for most of last season in David Fales, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed on Tuesday. It will be on a one-year deal.

With many believing the Jets might dip their toes into the backup quarterback market after that position was decimated last year following Darnold suffering from mono, it simply never happened according to Vacchiano. There was no interest shown in Matt Moore, who was the best one on the market, and had a history playing for Adam Gase in Miami.

However, it is still very possible for the Jets to bring in someone to battle with Fales for that backup role, a source told Vacchiano.

If the 2020 NFL Draft continues to remain on schedule, the Jets have less than a month to decide what they want to do with their No. 11 overall pick -- if they haven't done so already.

Jets GM Joe Douglas is leading his first draft ever in New York, so he definitely wants to get the pick right. For awhile, it looked like a new offensive tackle to cover Sam Darnold would be the only avenue for him to explore as NFL free agency kicked off.

Douglas added a few pieces to his line, an objective he had from the start. However, George Fant, a depth player with the Seahawks, being the only tackle that he brought in pointed to the fact that he might explore the deep market of first-round tackles.

Jets QB Sam Darnold and Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen will always be linked, as the two were taken just four picks apart in the top seven of the 2018 NFL Draft, with both landing in the AFC East.

And now, with the sports world on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak, the two are paired together once again.

According to a report from Albert Breer of The MMQB, Darnold, Allen, and new Washington Redskins quarterback Kyle Allen are all working out together in Southern California.

The Jets have eight draft picks, including four in the first two days of the draft. That, of course, includes the third-rounder they got from the Giants in the Leonard Williams trade.

Considering how many holes they have to fill after their slow trip through the free agent market, they certainly can put those picks to good use. Exactly how they'll do that is hard to know with one month still to go until the draft starts.

But here's an early projection, based on the team's needs, what sources have said about players they might like, and what scouts have said about the value of certain players in the draft...

Jets general manager Joe Douglas told anyone who would listen that he was going to focus on rebuilding the offensive line this offseason -- and boy, did he ever. Four of the six free agents he signed from other teams were offensive linemen, and he brought back one from last year's Jets, too.

And that's great. The Jets' line should be better and stronger and deeper in 2020, which means more protection for quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Le'Veon Bell. The Jets' offense will be better, and obviously that's important.

But what about everything else Douglas still has to do?

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Jets have exercised the 2021 option year in Griffin's contract.

The 30-year-old tight end established some strong chemistry with quarterback Sam Darnold during his first season in New York, and as a result, the Jets rewarded him in late November with a new three-year, $10.8 million deal with $4 million guaranteed.

Through the first wave of free agency, Joe Douglas and the Jets have taken time to improve the team's offensive line -- their No. 1 offseason priority -- while also bringing back a number of their own players who had hit the open market.

With moving pieces now falling into place, here's a look at how the Jets' depth chart may be looking right now (or at least our best guess), though there's still work to be done ...

QUARTERBACK: Sam Darnold, Mike White

This offseason, much has been made about the Giants' backup quarterback situation, but the Jets could also use a veteran signal-caller behind Darnold. Trevor Siemian and David Fales, both of whom saw playing time with Darnold dealing with mono last season, are both free agents, and the Jets must add to the QB depth chart.

White is a former fifth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys, but he doesn't have the experience many teams look for at the backup spot.

On the first day of free agency, the Jets gave a $30 million contract to a reserve offensive lineman while some of the other top players they were eyeing signed elsewhere. They went to bed knowing they had a lot of work to do to emerge as winners in free agency.

Then they woke up and found out they had already won.

The news that Tom Brady is leaving the Patriots, which he announced on social media on Tuesday morning, did what no amount of free-agent money could possibly have done for the Jets, Dolphins and Bills. It opened a door that has been nailed shut for nearly two decades. It cleared a path for one of those three teams to win the AFC East.

Well, they prevailed.

It's unknown if the Jets jumped into Cooper's market, but the Cowboys ultimately re-signed him to a five-year deal worth $100 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. An NFC East rival in the Redskins were reportedly trying to get Cooper.

With the so-called "legal tampering window" now open, you can expect some of the biggest names to come off the market very quickly, as we've seen with Jets targets like Jack Conklin, Byron JonesAmari Cooper and Graham Glasgow to name a few.

So, let's consider some of the major names left who the Jets could be in the running for:

While we've looked in detail at potential free agent targets for the Jets, they may also be looking at opportunities within the trade market.

Let's take the Jets at their word and assume that trading Le'Veon Bell or Jamal Adams away isn't in their plans despite earlier rumors. We can also safely rule out them trading up in the draft. However, let's consider some more realistic potential trade targets they could consider making a move for:

OT Trent Williams

It's not every day that a seven-time Pro Bowler hits the market, so it must be tempting for the Jets to look into making a move for Williams. Acquiring the 31-year old would address arguably their biggest need by giving them elite protection for Sam Darnold. Williams has given up just one sack since 2016.

There are certainly more important things to think about at the moment with coronavirus concerns taking priority around the country. Other major sports leagues like the NBA, NHL, and MLB have suspended or delayed their seasons, while the NFL might be making moves that could impact important parts of the offseason. Several NFL agents and league insiders told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano that there seems to be at least a possibility of a delay to free agency. The negotiating window is scheduled to open at 12 p.m. ET on Monday.

But, in the case that free agency does in fact start on time next week, the Jets might look at last year as a blueprint to spending their cap room.

Pending free agent Robby Anderson, who said on Tuesday that he "truly" wants to be back with the Jets, joined Sportscenter on ESPN on Wednesday to discuss the process -- and his dream about Tom Brady.

Anderson said the dream involved the two of them being on the same practice field, adding that "it would be a dream come true" to play with Brady, whose future with the Patriots is in doubt.

"I didn't see like the actual colors of the jersey, but we literally was like on the same practice field at practice together," Anderson explained.

There's no secret that the top priority this offseason for Jets GM Joe Douglas is rebuilding an offensive line that struggled mightily in keeping Sam Darnold (and other Jets QBs) upright in 2019.

And when it comes to the all-important left tackle spot, there is not bigger name on the market than Washington Redskins veteran Trent Williams, who has been given permission by the team to seek a trade.

But after sitting a season out due to contract disputes and health issues, Williams will still cost any interested team a decent amount, both in terms of trade assets and a new contract.

The entire NFL knows that GM Joe Douglas is getting ready to overhaul the Jets' offensive line. The only question is how. They assume it'll be a mix of draft picks, big money free agents, and possibly a trade. And everyone has their theory on how he'll do it.

One consensus did emerge, though, at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. Multiple NFL sources said they'd be "shocked" or "surprised" or even "blown away" if Douglas didn't take an offensive lineman with the 11th pick in the NFL draft.

"How could he not?" said one NFL executive. "There are legitimately four starters that will go in the Top 15. They all have Pro Bowl potential. One, maybe even two of them, will be there for the Jets. He can't go wrong (picking a lineman). And he can get a receiver later.

The NFL Scouting Combine has been in full swing this week, but the real scouting continues on Friday as running backs, offensive linemen, kickers and special teamers take the the field.

Here's who the Jets should be keeping a close eye on when it all begins at 4 p.m...

1) Louisville T Mekhi Becton

It's no secret that the Jets need a lot of help on the offensive line this offseason. Really, every spot along the offensive line is due for an upgrade, and when it comes to protecting quarterback Sam Darnold, finding someone to protect the all-important blind side for years to come is the key.

At the tackle position, Mekhi Becton is a physical freak. Weighing in at 6-foot-7, 364 pounds, Becton would be the heaviest tackle drafted in the last decade, and he'd instantly become the second heaviest tackle in the NFL behind Trent Brown of the Raiders.

All NFL eyes are on Indianapolis this week for the 2020 Scouting Combine, and the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends will take part in on-field workouts on Thursday.

Wide receiver is undoubtedly a position of need for the Jets, and they may already have their targets set on one of the draft's fastest players.

Despite being at the NFL Combine and getting to look at a bunch of young talent, Jets GM Joe Douglas still feels the biggest needs for the team will come in free agency.

"Obviously, 21 UFAs, three RFAs, we have quite a few," Douglas said to SNY's Jeane Coakley on Tuesday in Indianapolis. "So this is an important week for us to get with not only those 21 guys and three RFAs and their representatives, but also others and just see what it's going to look like, so we have a lot of holes to fill moving forward."

Douglas said during his press conference at the combine that he wanted to make All-Pro safety Jamal Adams a "Jets for life," and he reiterated that sentiment later in the day with Coakley.

When Adam Gase came into One Jets Drive as the team's new head coach last season, he knew there was going to be a learning curve. It was an entirely new coaching staff, and more specifically, an entirely new offense for his QB Sam Darnold -- among other playmakers like Le'Veon Bell -- to learn.

But Year 2 in Gase's system should be much easier for the coaches and players, and he said as much during his presser at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

"I think Year 2 is usually the biggest kind of jump, whether it's a player or coach," Gase said. "It's been nice to kind of take that time off after the season, jump right into it, both sides of the ball.

The NFL's offseason started in earnest on Monday, as the league descended on the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to begin preparations for the NFL Draft. When the week-long meat market is over, free agency will only be two weeks away.

The Jets obviously still have plenty of holes despite a strong finish to their 7-9 season. Here's a look at the five areas -- in order of importance -- that rookie GM Joe Douglas will need to address the most over the next few months:

As he continues to pursue his dream of playing in MLB, Mets minor league prospect and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow addressed the media on Sunday afternoon, and made some positive comments on the two young quarterbacks playing in New York.

When asked if he was "yay or nay" on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, Tebow laughed at the question and then gave an encouraging answer on the No. 6 overall pick in last year's draft.

"I think he's got a lot of talent," Tebow said on Jones. "I think he was coached really well in college. I think he will continue to improve. I think continuing to get him more weapons and confidence is pretty critical."

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is listed at 100-1 to win the NFL MVP in 2020, according to BetOnline.ag.

Darnold played in Week 1 in 2019, but missed the next three games recovering from mononucleosis. He returned in Week 6 and played the rest of the season, finishing the year with a 7-6 record at quarterback. He threw for 3024 yards and a 61.9% completion percentage, along with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Darnold is joined at 100-1 by Giants running back Saquon Barkley, former Giants wide reciever Odell Beckham Jr., former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and others.

Free agency hasn't worked out well for the Jets. They spent a lot of money under former GM Mike Maccagnan and very few of those contracts have turned out to be worth the money. Some of them, in fact, now look like the worst deals the Jets have ever made.

So it's with that knowledge and a sense of great caution that the Jets head into their first offseason under new GM Joe Douglas. He's armed with about $50 million in salary cap space to spend, and likely a lot more coming when he's finished with his cuts. And he will spend, because he has to on a team filled with far too many holes.

Super Bowl LIV is finally here, as the Chiefs and 49ers square off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday night to see who will hoist the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy at the end of the night.

Both squads have their stars. Patrick Mahomes leads a stacked offense that includes Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce as his weapons. But they're going to have to face off against Richard ShermanNick Bosa and the rest of the NFL's No. 2 defense. And, of course, you can't sleep on Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, and the rest of that Niners offense that ran all over the Packers two weeks ago.

But, for Jets fans, it's a chance to keep your eye on a few players that are set to enter free agency once this game is over.

He was the man that Eli Manning took over for when the Giants decided to transition to their rookie quarterback back in 2004. It's been 16 years, and Kurt Warner is now being asked if his once-apprentice will be joining him in the Hall of Fame one day.

His answer? Look at the stats. They speak for themselves in Warner's eyes.

"It is such a weird process of going into the Hall of Fame and what all goes into making someone a Hall of Fame player," Warner told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano from the Loews Hometown set-up at the Super Bowl Experience down in Miami. "But, when you look at quarterbacks, you look at stats -- that's the era that we live in. And when you look at stats, without question Eli Manning has the stats to be in the Hall of Fame."

In his second season in the NFL, Jets QB Sam Darnold was on a rollercoaster. He dealt with mono just as the season started, and as he made his way back, he even played through a thumb injury.

It was a strong second-half finish for the Jets, which showed great development from the USC product. Darnold reflected on that and much more with SNY's Jeane Coakley while meeting fans at Jets House...

Among draft experts, there is a great debate about which wide receiver is the best in this year's NFL Draft. And that debate revolves around Alabama's Jerry Jeudy and Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb.

Both receivers check off all the boxes evaluators and coaches alike look for. Whether its top-notch speed, route-running, ball-tracking, or sturdy hands, Jeudy and Lamb possess the attributes necessary to translate their stellar college careers into NFL careers as No. 1 receivers.

And the Jets could definitely use one of those for Sam Darnold

All but two teams -- the Chiefs and 49ers -- are left to worry about their offseasons with Super Bowl LIV set for Feb. 2. While NFL free agency kicks off in March, the efforts of scouting top NFL Draft prospects will ramp up.

The Jets have the No. 11 overall pick in this year's Draft after picking at No. 3 in 2018 and 2019. Sam Darnold and Quinnen Williams were used with those selections.

Who will join them with the latest first round selection in GM Joe Douglas' first draft? Here's what experts believe will happen...

Skimming through myriad mock drafts that have surfaced ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, many believe Jets GM Joe Douglas will be targeting a No. 1 receiver for Sam Darnold. There are a few playmakers for New York to choose from, including Alabama's Jerry Jeudy, Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb, and Clemson's Tee Higgins

Having a top receiver is definitely a need for the Jets, but is that what they should be focused on with the No. 11 overall pick? What about protecting Darnold?

While there's multiple playmakers to salivate over in the first round, there's just as many offensive linemen to bulk up that unit for the Jets.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold reportedly had surgery to repair a ligament in his left thumb on Tuesday, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.

Darnold is not expected to miss any time as the surgery was performed by the Jets team doctors.

He originally suffered a thumb injury on Oct. 27 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, though, he never missed any time due to the injury. He wore a brace on his left hand under a glove for the rest of the season.

Over the next week or so, we're taking an in-depth look at the rookie season for each of the Jets' 2019 rookie class. We continue today with a look at tight end Trevon Wesco, who was selected in the fourth round out of West Virginia.

On the face of it, Wesco had a disappointing season, as he only caught two passes, struggled in pass protection and did little to elevate the Jets' underwhelming running game. However, there were signs of usefulness throughout the season and some evidence of progression.

He typically had mixed results as a run blocker from the tight end position early in the season but seemed to improve his consistency as the season went along. He seemed to hold up well at the point attack and was able to handle assignments that required him to set the edge against defensive linemen while at times flashing dominance against smaller players in space.

After having the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft in 2018 and 2019 and nabbing Sam Darnold and Quinnen Williams, the Jets find themselves all the way down at No. 11 for the 2020 draft.

But there will still be plenty of elite players to choose from.

Here's how the latest mocks see things shaking out...

From an off-field bout with mononucleosis to on-field struggles with development, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold's second year in New York ultimately impressed general manager Joe Douglas.

"Talk about toughness and talk about adversity," Douglas said. "Not many guys faced more adversity than Sam, as far as dealing with the mono and some rough patches during the year. But I think the respect that Sam has earned from everyone in this building -- and especially in the locker room -- as far as his ability to handle adversity, to come back, to play really good football, to watch him grow throughout the year, to watch him grow from Year 1 to Year 2, just with everything -- the decision-making, the leadership -- it was really impressive to see."

Darnold went 7-6 as a second-year starter, completing 273 of 441 passes (61.9 percent) for 3,024 yards and 19 touchdowns to 13 interceptions in 13 games.
